I don’t think the fans of any of these teams feel great this week. The Packers came out the best in the standings, but even they clearly have issues on the field.
Vikings get Moss back for this year, and it sound like a third rounder is all it cost. Gutsy move, and they’re making a move to win it all this year. Certainly makes things interesting.
It’s a done deal. Moss back to the Vikings for a 3rd round pick. Credit to Ziggy Wilf. He isn’t messing around with trying to get the Vikings to the Superbowl. Once Sidney gets back, this is suddenly going to look like a pretty formidable offense.
If true, this is fantastic news. It doesn’t guarantee us anything, but it does give us a better chance of staying afloat until Sidney is able to return. If he can get back on the field playing at last year’s level, we’re going to have a truly scary receiving corps.
I went and dug my old 84 jersey out of the closet. I’m wearing it now. It shrank. I could swear it used to be bigger.
Is there any reason to even continue this thread? I mean, the division has pretty much been decided now, hasn’t it?
Superbowl, Homeboy!
At times, you have a tendency toward hyperbole and overexaggeration in these threads.
This isn’t one of those times.
With Moss and eventually Rice stretching the field, Shiancoe as an above average target in the middle, Percy Harvin as a damn third receiver, and, oh yeah, Adrian Peterson, if Favre plays even mediocre football the Vikings are going to the Super Bowl (barring injury). Who’s going to beat them? The Packers? The Vikings might score 60 points against the Packers’ defense with that offense.
Vikings fan reality-checking in. I don’t think Vegas is going to make us a favorite for Monday night because of this move. 1-3 is still possible, and it’s a hell of a hole from which to dig out. of. noun.
I think Randy can still help right away on monday because he still has to get double coverage just by running down the field. That takes heat off of Percy and Shank, not to mention AP. Randy is also the kind of receiver who Favre can just lob the ball up to on a go route or in the end zone and let him go get it. He doesn’t need to run complex routes to make himself a viable target. Plus, Moss always does well when he feels like he’s got something to prove, and a monday night game is a perfect stage for him to prove it.
I see a rejuvenated offense going into New York on monday, and I see Favre really being charged up for the first time all season.
As a disclaimer, I am slightly biased as a Vikings fan and may not be seeing this 100% objectively.
This is not a move I like to see as a Packer fan because I think it makes the Vikings better, simple.
However, I can see some problems with it. The main thing as a Viking fan that I wo uld be concerned about is that Moss and Favre’s potential fascination with getting him the ball could really disrupt what should be the game plan, using the threat of Moss to spread the field and making space for Adrian Peterson. It will be interesting to see how this affects the Vikings overall game plan. However, it is clear the Vikings needed some more downfield recieving threats as Berrian is a complete bust. Moss is ripe with possibilites, not all of the beneficial.
I do like to see the Viking fans optimism, I am sure I would be reacting the same way. But the truth is the Vikings have a very tough four game stretch and could easily come out of it 1-3. And Moss will not be double-teamed by the Jets this Monday. In NE Revis always covered Moss by himself very effectively, no reason to think it should change.
I agree, but Revis is coming off an injury and might not be able to handle the assignment. Revis could be on the bench more than usual, or switched off to handle Harvin or Berrian. My guess is Favre will test the situation early.
And the winner of the Straight Dope Message Board Lifetime Acheivement Award for Understatement goes to …
Can Randy Moss pass protect? Can he surgically repair Favre’s ankle and his wounded psyche? Can he make Brett make smarter throws? Will he go over the middle and catch the tough pass?
He’s a fine addition, and will help the Vikings quite a bit. I am happy to see Viking fans so excited too.
He doesn’t have to do any of those things. All he has to do is stretch the field. He doesn’t have to be the Superfreak any more, just give Favre a viable deep option. They have Schianco and Harvin to go across the middle. This isn’t a scenario where Moss has to come in and be a savior or carry the team, just do the things he still does well. He’s plugging a hole. Potentially we know he’s capable of a lot more, but we don’t need him to be spectacular anymore, just good. I think this acquistion also serves to re-energize Favre.
Then when Sidney comes back, we’ll really be loaded going into the post-season.
That says a ton about Favre’s mental weakness that he needs them to acquire Moss to be “energized”. All those long weeks without Chilly, Jared Allen, et. all coming down to stroke his ego must have made him fragile indeed.
It’s actually probably for the best. The franchise will have to be rebuilding when they move the team to LA.
