Well, that’s nice, and all, but the Texans let Robinson go despite already having one of the worst secondaries in the league and signed the younger, better Jonathan Joseph for less money.
Ray Edwards is a marginal player who benefited from playing with Jared Allen.
Sean Weatherspoon did almost nothing as a rookie and couldn’t beat out a bunch of journeymen for either starting spot. Lofton and Decoud are okay, but hardly special players- certainly neither would have made a difference against the Packers.
I’m a big fan of Thomas Dimitroff, but he really undid a lot of his own good work (and good inheritance) this offseason.
Today in News That Only Interests Omni™, the Bears are supposedly going to sign WR Max Komar, an UDFA from Idaho who was just released from the IR by the Cardinals. News hasn’t broken on if and when it’s going to be official and if there’s any chance he’ll end up on the roster or just the practice squad. Komar is a shifty, compact, white slot receiver so he’s of course being compared to Wes Welker. We’ve already got one of those guys in Sanzenbacher so who knows what role this guy might fill. At 5-11 and 202 lbs, he’s should be bigger, stronger and faster than Sanzenbacher. He supposedly was impressive when he got on the field in Arizona amidst a pretty talented position group.
I suspect the Bears view him as a practice squad guy brought in to work with project QB Nathan Enderle who he synced up with in college. They are basically hoping for the same relationship that Cutler and Bennett share. If Komar never sees the field but helps Enderle develop into an NFL replacement level QB it’s a smart move.
Well, yeah, but I’m not sure the moves have much to do with one another. Getting a little better at the 5th or 6th WR spot is a small incremental move that might never have an impact. There aren’t any big #1 WR types guys available and I’m not thinking the Bears or anyone thinks this is a replacement for that move. Komar certainly isn’t a speculative project guy that they somehow think can become that. Had they picked up a guy like Ramses Barden that might be a more relevant concern.
I’m personally going to guess that the Bears are considering dumping Sam Hurd after a couple bad drops. Hurd was brought in primarily as a special teams guy and if Toub hasn’t liked what he’s seen he might be viewed as a waste of space with no future. They could add Komar or call up Kris Adams and let Komar take his spot on the practice squad.
Get T.O. He’ll be available soon. He can join the Vernon Gholston, Roy Williams, Sam Hurd, and Matt Spaeth on the “What the hell, they’re better than what we got and are worth a flier” Bears list.
Screw that. If the Bears got Owens, I think I’d probably have to pluck my eyes out with my mother’s broach.
At first I didn’t think it was that bad of an idea getting Roy Williams. He’s big and I would think that he’d want to play with a chip on his shoulder. You know, prove that he should be playing football and his past few years were an abnormality and not the norm. If it doesn’t work, hey it’s just a one year contract. The problem with that is, he’s takining touches away from everyone else when he’s missing the ball and causing interceptions.
But at least we got Clutts. You have to love a fullback with that name and he looks like he wants to be there. The running game has been so much better when he’s been in.
T.O. is the sort of player who could make a huge difference for an otherwise solid team. Cutler needs Brandon Marshall instead of the legion of shifty mini-mes he throws to now (plus Roy Williams). Since Marshall isn’t available, you may as well grab TO.
Old, yeah, but he put up 983 yards and 9 touchdowns in 14 games last year with the no-longer-good Carson Palmer.
The Lions beat the Bears in an ugly game last night. leaving them and the Packers tied at 5-0 atop the division. My favorite quote: "“Defensively, we stink.”. Thanks Brian Urlacher. I think it’s relatively clear that the arrow is pointing up for the Lions and pointing down for the Bears, which makes me happy. It’s nice to have the only undefeated teams in the NFL in the NFC North. Now if only those laggards in Chicago and Minnesota would play better outside the division, we could really start bragging about being the best division in the NFL.
The Bears are the worst team in the division. Their so called OL and WR core are the worst in the NFL. The defense is a mere shell of what it once was.
Jerry Angelo, Mike Tice, Mike Martz, and Lovie Smith all need to go, ASAP.
The Vikings are considerably better. If they accept that they are a running team, it’s not even close.
The Lions destroyed the Bears in the trenches and were the better team offensively, defensively, and in special teams. Detroit’s signings of Stephen Tulloch and Eric Wright were the underrated moves of the offseason. Tulloch has been Detroit’s best defender (along with Suh), while Wright has been great in coverage and a beast against the run.
Here’s a Lions stat for you: They’re on a 9 game winning streak dating back to last season. Before their 9-0 streak? They went 5-47.
Martin Mayhew is the greatest GM in football right now. The guts the Lions showed by keeping a Matt Millen underling as GM is astounding. Most teams would have gotten rid of anything Millen-associated. Instead, the Lions believed Mayhew (who worked under Millen) was the man for the job and he’s been excellent so far.
Another fun Lions stat: Calvin Johnson has scored more points than the St. Louis Rams.
I bought a share in the last stock sale (1997, when they were financing the big expansion and renovation of Lambeau). I look at it as my $250 souvenir, and my excuse for being able to occasionally yell at my TV, in order to berate my employees.
