2014 College Football General Thread

Whew! That was a nerve wracking afternoon with an hour and a half rain delay and a hard fought close game but my Gamecocks came out on top!

Maty Mauk is probably drooling over the prospect of lighting up both of our secondaries and UK almost made UF irrelevant again this year. The SEC east is wide open now.

It looks like the Pac-12’s playoff hopes are all on Oregon, now that USC tripped on their shoelaces and face-planted; and UCLA just doesn’t look very impressive.

It was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing day for me. I was alone in picking the yardbirds in the various places I do such things. But I also went with my heart over my mind and picked the Vols for another upset that didn’t really ever get close.

At least Vandy pulled out a win over one of the bottom third teams. Phew!

But Steve’s Whoop-Ass must have put the right buzz on the boys in garnet!

In a game long-awaited: Miami Hurricanes come to Lincoln, Nebraska!

My Cornhuskers lost the Orange Bowl in 1983, 89 and 92 to Miami. If we add in the 1993 and 1994 Orange Bowl losses to Florida State, it always seemed like we were playing Florida teams in Florida bowl games. Part of it was the Big 8 champ going Miami’s Orange Bowl, but the Florida teams had a built-in advantage. It seemed so unfair how we always played “neutral fields” in their home stadiums.

Granted, those were some exceptional teams (nearly all won the national title after beating us). But we Husker fans always thought “Bring those Florida teams and their fancy passing games to a Nebraska winter and let’s see”.

Now, decades later, I get my wish. Of course, both teams are mere shadows of their 80s and 90s dominance. And Lincoln’s weather is probably going to in the low 80s on Saturday (geez, couldn’t we have at least switched for a late November game?).

The Big Ten doesn’t play out of conference games after the first few weeks, so you’re never going to get an SEC team in winter. But yeah, it would be fun to see Alabama playing in blowing snow at 15°.

That’ll be when Hell freezes over, or New Orleans freezes over, whichever comes first.

B1G Excuses for $600, Alex.

Alex:

Everyone rings in simultaneously

Alex:

Well…bowl games are clumped in the south and southwest, because everyone wants a nice vacation in December. So teams in the upper Midwest get a nice va-cay; they also have to play a road game.

And why are there so many SEC vs B1G bowl games?

I’ll take TV Ratings for $1,000, Alex.

It’d be nice to spread some of that love around. The Pac-12 bigwigs were busy lining up games with Mountain West #5 in the middle of December, while the SEC has got a buttload of New Year’s Day games against the B1G. You guys should dump the B1G and invite the Pac to the Capital One game, or something like that.

This late in the thread one would expect to have heard about the Overall Conference Standings. Is it a faulty memory of mine that one of the big purveyors of CFB statistics (ESPN, NCAA, CBS, Bleacher Report, Joe Schitt the Ragman) would have up by now the Won-Lost records by conference. I have not been able to locate such a thing and that sort of thing has amused me in past years.

Anybody seen that sort of breakdown yet?

The best I have found is at http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm about hallway down the page at Conference Rankings but the W-L records are missing for the whole conference.

Try this one.

I totaled all the W-L and subtracted the conference games, and came up with 25-4 for the Pac-12 OOC. (There doesn’t seem to be any point in including conference games, since they cancel each other out).

I’d remove FCS from the total. I know the Pac has played (and won) 4, at least.

I looked up the Pac-12 records in more detail – 8-0 against FCS teams (including Portland State twice). So their FBS OOC record is 17-4. (2 by WSU, 1 by Colorado…neither of which were upsets…and 1 by USC.)

Okay, this is not the same breakdown I’m trying to locate, but the one I’m hunting for is in a similar format as
2013 NCAA Division I FBS football season - Wikipedia from last year’s Bowl Season.

I think there were weekly updates last year (and in previous years) somewhere at one of the CFB sites. I just haven’t seen one this year.

There was rumor going around yesterday (Deadspin) that Jameis Winston was spotted on campus, standing up and yelling “F*** her right in the pussy.”

It was treated with a grain of salt, as no video had been posted.

But apparently it was true, and JW has been suspended for the 1st half vs Clemson.

What an idiot.

jsc1953, I agree completely. And as I posted in the other thread, I really hope this wakes him up. Jimbo Fisher is NOT a guy you want to mess with and if Sean Macguire has a stellar first half against Clemson, Jameis will find himself on a VERY short leash (obviously he’s most of the way there already). I seriously never thought that FSU’s Heisman winner would make Johnny Football look tame in comparison. What a stupid stupid boy.

I have to give Jimbo Fisher credit for getting on top of this with (IMHO) an appropriate response.

I’m watching the Auburn-Kansas State game & it looks like the American flag is at half-staff.

Any idea why?

Not impressed with the War Eagles. They play like that in the Iron Bowl and my bet is safe (took 'Bama pre-season with a buddy).
