2016 NFL Draft Discussion

Very pleased that my Saints took Sheldon Rankins, who by all accounts is extremely talented, athletic, and has a great attitude, with the only knock against him being that he’s just a tiny bit undersized (about 6’1 290) for a DT.

It’s not the meniscus, the cartilidge is separating from the bone and that may require microfracture surgery, which is pretty risky. I think it’s a similar situation to Jay Ajayi last year, and the concern is that his career may only last a few years, and microfracture surgery may make that more hampered than expected.

That said, I’d be okay with the Browns taking a risk at the top of the second round, but I suspect they’re going to trade that pick, since some team is going to be shocked at someone dropping out of the first and make a decent offer.

Was Corey Coleman really the best WR in this draft? I’d have rather seen the Browns take Treadwell or maybe even Fuller. The first thing I heard about Coleman was 1) can’t run routes and 2) bad hands. Oh and don’t forget he’s 5’10".

Myles Jack admitting he may need microfracture surgery in the near future pretty much killed his chance of being a first round pick. That is not a procedure that a lot of athletes easily come back from (e.g. Anfernee Hardaway, Grady Sizemore, Tracy McGrady…).

Local Denver talk is that this ends the trade talks for Sam or Kap. Some fans are saying let Lynch understudy for a year with Sanchez, since the Amazing D can keep them in contention even with a marginal QB. Fan talk is just that tho, fan talk. Hey, it worked last season…

Having watched some video of Coleman, I feel like his favorable comparison isn’t someone like Percy Harvin but rather Steve Smith. He treats the DBs very aggressively for his size and uses quickness to get a step around them and then long speed to stay there.

He’s got a weird catching tendency. I’m not sure if he has bad hands exactly (although highlight reels aren’t going to show his drops) but rather he wants to catch the ball very low. He doesn’t body catch, but he wants to wait for the ball to be at waist height, falling over the shoulder into his hands. For a guy with a vertical like his, it’d be more reassuring if he high-pointed the ball. But he very much wants to catch the ball near his belly button. But not with his body - it’s always a hands catch - it’s just a low one.

It does show good judgment of the ball in the air that he’s able to consistently get the ball to fall into that basket. But against NFL DBs that will do a better job of keeping up with him, he’s going to have to high point and fight for the ball more.

That’s the thing about watching highlights - in all the instances you’re seeing, his technique worked. So it makes you wonder if he only used it because in that situation it was effective, or if that’s all he can do. In the few instances he does have to snatch the ball at the high point, he has good enough technique doing it, it’s just that you only rarely see it.

Here’s Coleman’s page on Draft Breakdown. They have 7 of his games this year and a few from last year. They show more than just the highlights, so you can get a better idea of how he is play by play.

Honestly, my analysis of Bosa started and stopped at “he’s a 4-3 guy, we run 3-4, we’re not taking him.” After reading some more, it does sound like we got a top 3 talent at a position of need. I am still not sure exactly how he fits in our scheme. If we didn’t have 2 really good OLBs already, I’d say he fits in as a slow big OLB in 3-4 and a nice DE in our nickel package, maybe having a smaller than average DE in 3-4 isn’t as big a problem as I’d think if he’s as good an athlete as Bosa.

I think center, safety and maybe another DL are probably our biggest priorities coming up. I don’t follow college enough to name names though. It does seem like TT goes need in the first round and chases value in the later rounds, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we gambled on Jack in round 2, even though it isn’t really a position of need. I might be extrapolating too much from the T’eo and Allen picks.

Having another team’s first rounder next year creates an interesting rooting situation, you’ve got another team you’ve always want to lose that you normally wouldn’t care about. I have nothing against the Eagles but man how awesome would it be if they had some massive implosion and had a top 5 pick they traded away to get Wentz?

Surprised there was no trade at the top.

Buc’s get Noah Spence. Like this pick a lot.

Lots of really interesting picks at the top of the 2nd.

The Bears traded back a handful of spots so the Bills could come up and get Ragland. The Bears got back a 4th rounder this year and next year, effectively mooting the trade up for Floyd in the first round.

Eager to see who we take. I would have expected to see it be A’Shawn Robinson, but he just went to the Lions. Probably won’t be Jarran Reed, he doesn’t fit the scheme. Also would have targeted Jihad Ward, but the Raiders grabbed him. Really like that kid from my pathetic alma mater.

Mackensie Alexander might be the guy here.

I was shocked that Jalen Smith went ahead of Jack to the Cowboys, but I kinda like the pick. The Cowboys team doctor did the surgery, so you have to figure they know what they are getting.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I love that Shephard pick for the Giants. The kid is going to be a killer slot guy in the NFL, really wanted the Bears to grab him.

EDIT2: The Packers just leapfrogged the Bears to grab somebody. Who are they potentially fighting over? Hmm. Reed and Alexander seem like the leftovers from the first that could be targets.

Jason Spriggs is the pick for the Packers. I actually glanced at him for the Bears here since they need an LT. Not sure if Spriggs is that guy or not though.

EDIT: Looks like the Bears are trading back again. Wonder if the Packers guessed right and the Bears are now bailing after missing Spriggs or are they just not thrilled with anyone at all here?

Bears added another 4th rounder this year. Well, lets hope all these guys are as good as Adrian Amos.

Damn… Jets just took Hackenberg. I really think that’s a great pick for the Jets, especially if they get Fitzpatrick in there for a couple years.

Would have loved the Bears to take a shot on him in the 3rd.

Su’a Cravens is a 6’1" 226 lb LB who’s probably too undersized to play the position. He’s six inches shorter and the same weight as Leonard Floyd…fuck me. Can we just plant Leonard Floyd in Gibsons for like 4 weeks?

Sittin’ here talkin’ to myself…

Bears actually made a pick, and the winner is… Cook? Vannett? Whitehair?

EDIT: Whitehair, I like it. Insurance for Slauson and Long. He and Floyd can take turns in the weight room and split the tab at Maestros.

Not hating it.

This one I love. I watched almost that entire video you linked in post 72 and that got me excited to see where he went. That he went to the Jets is awesome; I can watch him (hopefully?) develop into a legit starter.

Hackenberg has a chance to be good. His regression was more about not fitting into Franklin’s system at PSU.

Well they traded up for a kicker.

Terrible line and stupid coaches. Not sure if a player can get psychologically “broken” at 19 years of age, but Hackenberg as a freshman was just as good as Cook was in his redshirt senior year with a worse supporting cast.

The Bucs just drafted a kicker in the second round and traded up to do it. WTF is happening?
