2016 Omnibus College Football Thread

Rutgers lost to Washington.
Northwestern lost to Western Michigan.

AP writers are HUGE fans of Wisconsin this week, putting them at #10. It seems to me (as an alum/fan) that the coaches are more reasonable by putting them at #16.

The Badgers’ @MSU, @Mich gauntlet coming up at the end of the month though (thanks scheduling computer). If MSU beats Notre Dame in week 3 that game could be between two Top 10 teams.

ND hasn’t looked that impressive to me for the last few years; I would be willing to bet that they have the lowest average margin of victory over unranked teams for the last 5-10 years of any team that’s so consistently in the rankings. Last week’s game was atypical only because they lost by a FG rather than winning by one.

Unless your only concern is a national championship, I don’t see how you could be very disappointed in Oregon over the last ten years or so.

But the coaches seem to agree with you; Oregon won by 25 points last week, and dropped a spot in the poll. Sure, they beat an unranked team, but that’s better than being beaten by an unranked team, which happened to ND, yet they’re still ranked ahead of the Ducks.

I haven’t had much reason to participate in this thread the last few years, but that might change this year with my Fightin’ Lovies.

The Illini looked downright dominating this week. I concede that they were only playing Murray State and they are terrible, but in the past several years I got used to the Illini losing or making a close game of FCS opponents. Watching them put on a demoralizing performance like that (35-3 in the first half, 52-3 final after sitting the starters) is pretty unfamiliar. There were big plays and sustained drives, lots of big defensive plays against a star QB.

Next week we get #22 UNC, and then we get Western Michigan who upset Northwestern this week. So we’ll see very soon how much of this was legit, or if it’s no more instructive than last season’s drubbings of Kent State and Western Illinois.

Lovie wants us to run the ball and we did that behind a makeshift O line. We’re steady at QB and I really think the defense will be able to hold up against anyone this season. So, bring it Heels, welcome to the House of Paign.

Go Seminoles! Florida State! Florida State! Florida State! WOOOOOOO(t)!

Wow, lots of ugly match ups this week. Probably the best of the bunch is the Holy War.

Let’s go Iowa State!

What’s that, we lost to Northern Iowa (again)?
We’re playing a pissed off, loaded Iowa team (again)?
I have a fridge full of beer, and nothing to do but drink myself into amnesia (again)?

It’s gonna be a good weekend…if everyone waits until Monday to tell me how the game ended.

What an ugly slate for week 2. No matchups between ranked teams. Of the top 25, only 5 teams are playing a team from a power 5 conference.

I love that Texas went from unranked to #11. Apparently voters were deceived by the fact that they poured a lot of points on a terrible Notre Dame defense.

Game day in Bristol TN for the Hokies - Vols game.

150,000 expected in the converted Nascar stadium.

150 thousand!!!

Current attendance record for a CFB game is about 115,000

Wow, the cupcakes are fighting back today. OSU struggling against CMU, Georgia having a hard time with Nicholls(!), #2 Clemson only up by 3 against Troy in the mid-3rd quarter.

My team is Washington and I’m cringing at the rankings. We have a really solid D, and an improved offense, but I don’t think it’s a #8 team.

Our OOC schedule is easy, so we gain a win over last year, and most losses in conf. were close, so with all the returning players, we probably pick up a couple more wins.

My prediction for end of regular season, before any conf champ/bowl type games:
2 losses
ranked #15.

FSU OTOH is cruising at 49-8 at the start of Q4.

I hope it’s a good game; I can’t wait to see that crowd!

Way to go, Central! Too bad, Nicholls. So close. A pretty doggy week of games.

Whatever possessed UTenn to play in a speedway? Sure, they’ll get 150,000 fans but many of the seats are crappy.

San Diego State is going to be surprising a lot of people this year. Unfortunately, that may include my Cal Golden Bears this week.

As an OSU fan, I can’t be upset at the refs, even if the call was incorrect to give CMU an untimed down - it isn’t good for the game to allow that kind of penalty to end the game.

We shot ourselves in the foot to take the penalty instead of running the clock legally or punting it, then shot ourselves again by allowing a hail mary and lateral.

It’s a neutral site game. Each school will get over $4 million dollars.

CMU fan here, was excited to see the win, then disappointed with the aftermath.Sucks for both teams.

Louisville is destroying Florida State, 56-10 with 14:27 left. This was probably unexpected.

Just got back from the gym and was watching it there. Looks like Louisville has great quickness and power on the lines. Just absolutely dominating every phase of the game.

It’s entirely possible that one of the major conferences might get left out of the playoff this year if Louisville and Houston can continue to dominate and remain undefeated. If Louisville and UH do in fact win out, then one would think that OU and FSU are finished. If they end up as conference champions then the Big 12 and ACC would be out, leaving the SEC, Big10, and Pac 12, plus one other at large. There might also be some bias against a Pac 12, too, so maybe they miss out as well. Lots of ifs, ands, and buts, though.
