It looks like we may finally get a few inches on Saturday. There is a front headed this way that looks to hit us head-on instead of skimming past us. It’s just weird how every place else is getting hammered by the La Niña, and we’re high and dry.
Freezing rain overnight, supposed to to to all rain by 1½ hrs ago. I just walked outside & took a tentative step off the porch to see what it’s like; my foot wanted to keep going on the ice. Looks like I’ll be inside for a while still.
I didn’t do that! When this thing first hit a month ago, it changed from rain to freezing rain when I wasn’t looking and I walked out my back door and fell on my ass.
Forecast was for a wintery mix of snow/sleet/freezing rain this evening (which has been coming down for some time now)
I went past some church this afternoon; it was obvious by the formal attire of everyone coming out that someone had just gotten married. One gal was standing on the steps wearing a shoulderless gown with a slit up to about her belly button & looking none too happy. Ummm, they make jackets, or at least wraps to keep you warm in February in the Northeast.
Just started to snow and will continue all night. Storm is predicted to be big enough that all the town services will be closed tomorrow (big whoop like there’s anything open on Sunday anyway. But the dump will be closed, which is serious.) Church is going to be zoom which I hate. We could get ten inches. This is snow country in February, no one is exactly surprised. Kinda excited for a nice big snow.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…. FU-A-U-A-FUCK
February is turning out to be “snow month” around here, for the first time this winter. But we’re still not getting much – no more than about 2 cm at a time. But Snowplow Guy is finally doing real work, even if it’s light work, as evidenced by the growing pile of snow at the curb beside the driveway. But there’s a snowfall warning that says we may get as much as 15 cm by Thursday morning, which (if it happens) would be the first real big one of the season. But this area doesn’t seem to get a lot of snow even when major snowfalls are predicted nearby.
They were predicting 2-6" for yesterday. That means that it was either going to be <2" or >6". I picked the under and was right. Hardly any snow. Last night the driveway looked like a paisley pattern run amok. Faint swirls of snow.
The forecast for last night was 1". I went for the under again. This AM, 2". (And a friendly 3 degrees.)
So, the forecast is 0 for 2 but I’m 1 and 1.
Predicting rain Friday evening. So I need to pick between no precip or snow. Hmmm.
A foot of fresh snow for Montreal today (Thursday) and another foot predicted for Sunday. Schools are all closed today, but otherwise for most people it’s just a minor inconvenience as long as you’re not driving (transit is working fine). (Montreal spends more on snow clearing/removal than any other city in the world - close to $200 million a year).
Montreal got 31 cm (12.2 inches) of snow on Thursday. Even with all that, the Bell Centre was full - 21,105 - for a hockey game Thursday evening. Today (Friday) is sunny and mostly clear. Preparing for 30-45 cm more on Sunday.
I just needed to pop in and add what I saw on our forecast:
On a positive note, I don’t think I’ll need to shovel
Look to the upper right corner – red line:
Jewish space lasers? Solar flare??
There is just one state in the entire Union that isn’t at least in part abnormally dry or in some stage of drought.
That’s Kentucky, where i live, and where we’ve had over 4 inches of precipitation (mostly rain) so far this month, and another 2-4 inches of rain forecast Saturday and Sat. night. We’re putting the basement freezer up on cinder blocks today in anticipation of possible basement flooding. Oh joy.
We’ve got two days in the next week that it’s not even supposed to get that hot. There’s going to be a nice breeze though.
We’ve about 8" of accumulated snow on the ground. A sleet storm put a heavy glaze of ice on the top and turned all unsalted roads to ice sheets (like ours for example). More sleet to come. Ugh.
Just want to add that, in fact, it happened. I don’t know how much we got but it was enough to build up significant drifts and block roads, sidewalks, and driveways. The guy who plows my driveway had to come by at least twice.
It looks like there’s more snow coming tomorrow and Sunday, and some areas may get even more than last time. The weather bureau has issued a winter storm watch, and snow is forecast all day and night Saturday and Sunday with a 60% chance of continuing into Monday. Very lucky for commuters that most of this is happening over the weekend.
The winter storm watch has turned into a winter storm warning. 7 to 9 cm expected today, 15 to 25 cm tomorrow with blowing snow and reduced visibility.
February is definitely making up for the relative lack of snow previously this winter. Last winter didn’t have much snow at any point, but that was an El Nino winter. This one I believe is La Nina, and was expected to have more than usual precipitation, though much of it was rain. Once February hit, all hell broke loose!
I do prefer snow when it’s 0 degF. A 20 minute shoveling job can be over in 5 minutes with a Leaf Blower
I’m presently vacationing in coastal Norway. All the locals are whining that there’s not nearly enough snow or cold and their grass is green. It seems to be more a sense of resigned foreboding than actual whining. More like “Wow, are we screwed”.
Going towards last Thurs. the forecast was for no snow that day. With less than a half day to go they started predicting snow for Thurs. night. Even as it was about to hit weather.com was predicting around an inch. But the NWS had a winter weather advisory of 3-7".
I decided to go with the upper range of the NWS forecast. Got almost 7"- just made it.
So lots of snow to shovel, etc. But at least the temps warmed up so by mid-afternoon Fri our street was fairly clear. It’s been melting like mad. Our sump pump usually runs a lot when that much snow melts quickly but it ran only two times yesterday that I noticed. In the sunny areas we are basically down to the piles.
From here on it’ll probably be a few storms of heavy snow but not too cold. So it’ll melt fast.
It seems that the “norm” for a La Niña winter is failing over many parts of the country.
We had a 78 degf temperature rise from thursday morning to sunday afternoon.
