2025/2026 Snow Thread

TV just reported 6 inches for La Crosse – and we may get a bit more.

Brian

NE Kansas had rain turn into snow/sleet and then the temps dropped to 20’s. This morning on my daily walk I came across a cat that seemed to be struggling with something on the railroad tracks. Its front paws were frozen to the tracks. I scared him enough that he pulled them off and took off.

I’m a bit north of you, Springfield IL…we got 9 inches. a new record for November

We wound up with about 9" here in west suburban Cook County. It snowed, more or less continuously, from pre-dawn on Saturday, until at least 1 a.m., and then we got another short burst mid-morning today (Sunday).

There’s talk of heavy snow tomorrow morning, right during the going-to-school times. Which, of course, leads to talk of a possible snow day.

We’ll see.

I’ve got a cortisone injection to C6 at 6 am tomorrow, so I expect a blizzard.

Looks like we may get a little bit early in the morning tomorrow. Capital Weather Gang gives a 30% chance of our county schools being delayed by 2 hours. Given that the northern reaches are only a county away from Pennsylvania I guess it’s a possibility. Now that I’m a sub and get paid by the hour I’m a little less fond of delayed openings. We’re just outside DC, so we could get nothing and still have a delay.

Woke up to wet white snow all over everything. If it doesn’t melt today, it’s likely to tomorrow. And then we might get more snow Thursday.

I don’t particularly care, although I’m glad Sunday morning’s potential snow didn’t materialize– our Thanksgiving Visitors were anxious because last year they spun out on black ice (and totaled the car) trying to leave our general area.

And, yup, bam. Snow day.

Not that I’ll ever complain, but it’s going to make scheduling for the rest of the semester even more of a mess.

@P-man , most districts around here, subs are paid by the day, or half-day, not by the hour. If it’s any time at all, it counts as a half-day, and if it’s more than a half-day, it counts as a full day (and teachers are correspondingly encouraged to take half-days or full-days off, not just “I’ll only be out for one period”). A delayed start day would still count as a full day for subs (though we seldom actually have delayed start days; it’s usually all-or-nothing).

I think the way our county does it is an anomaly. I’m pretty sure the neighboring districts all pay by the day or half day. My daughter subs in Chicago, and it’s by the day there. There did end up being a delay today; it’s raining here, and I don’t think it’s really doing anything in the far reaches of the county either. It’s supplemental income for me, so it’s not that big a deal.

We moved out of the very, very high mountains of Colorado to the front range (North of Denver). So I don’t have to plow anymore, or dig out with the tractor.

But I did get a snowblower for down here. It’s an Ego electric. Biggest one they make I think. It handled 5 inches of wet snow with aplomb. We have a big driveway and a 900 sq. ft. patio. I recharged it (and myself) once. What is really cool about some of these brands is all the batteries are interchangeable. My mower is also an Ego, and the batteries would also work with the snow blower. And the weed eater, and leaf blower.

Heh, welcome to suburbia enipla.

Major cold front coming down from the Arctic to southern Canada in the next couple of days.

Recorded temp of -53 C in Yukon today.

Don’t know if it will affect you folks south of 49.

Been almost 60 degrees for 4 days on MT. Warmest December since the 1930s. Rained all last night, 26 now for opening day at Bridger Bowl. Yay.

Put on my snow tires on Wednesday, because mid-December I should really need them, right? Highs of 60 through next week, and no sign of even a wintry mix in the forecast.

We’re finally getting our first snow. The forecast said 100% chance yesterday, but it hadn’t started yet when I went to bed a little after eleven. It was snowing when I woke up around seven, and is still coming down (80% today) Predicted total for the two days was 2-6"; the snowcap on the porch railing looks likes maybe three inches thus far.

The other day my wife commented, “This is bullshit. This is January or February snow, not December snow!” Meaning, snow that hangs around and hardens into grey-black icy mounds.

Here in the Chicago area, it seems we have had several years of essentially no winter. At most, only a couple of relatively short-lived cold snaps. It is not even mid-December, and we’ve had several inches of snow hanging around for 2 weeks already, with single digit temps yesterday and today. Not a great start.

Of course, with our crazy weather, I might be golfing in January or Feb!

It’ll be in the 40s by Wednesday, so there’s hope.

We received about 4/5 inches of snow. Since I am in the midst of a sciatica episode I was wondering how to get my sidewalk shoveled.

I could probably get it done in increments but would have lasting pain for the rest of the day.

I was on the Book of Faces/local page when I spotted a comment from a young man nearby offering to shovel walks with a “pay as you can” qualifier.

He was awesome.
I was grateful.

One snow removal of the season taken care of.
The Book of Faces can sometimes be helpful.

I hope that bodes well for the South. Here in Memphis, we’ve had more snow and ice in the last six years than in the rest of my entire life. I will happily give winter back to the North.

Anyone affected?
