2025/2026 Snow Thread

It appears we got 3 inches or so inside the DC Beltway in Maryland. It’s wet and heavy, but it’s gonna be a lot easier to shovel than the snowcrete we had a few weeks ago. Schools are closed in our county, which extends far to the north and west. DC schools are delayed. Streets seem clear. Dog pushed his tennis ball around with his nose to make a big snowball.

Up here by Mountain Creek we’re at about 10", but it’s hard to tell with all the drifting. For a change, my coworkers in south Jersey have gotten pummeled.

I saw Belmar is expecting to reach 30". That might be their record.
We’re just enough North & West to probably not reach 20".

More than 15” in Central Park so far and still coming down heavy. It’s eerily quiet out with the travel ban.

I went out at 6:30 for what I thought was a light first pass, and the driveway was over a foot (it’s at the bottom of a hill, unfortunately). My crappy little snowblower was already overpowered, so I shoveled half the driveway and then gave up for a while because the wind kinda scared me.

I’ll go back out again in a bit. I’m less worried about us, more about my mom - she’s nearby, but power goes out chronically, and she gets upset…I don’t think I can get over there as things stand right now.

It wouldn’t surprise me if a few of our regulars are missing today as over 600,000 households have a power outage:

Man, look at Cape Cod, 86.5% out. I was watching TV coverage this morning, it’s brutal there, though they weren’t getting the usual massive tides, so there’s that.

NWS had us at 25" three hours ago, and it’s still coming down! We’ll drift more than 3’ in the driveway before this is done. Exciting times. I’m developing some great shoveling muscles though.

We ended up at 20 to 24", way too much.

14” in phila. New England got pounded. Crazy reports from there today.

I live in a coastal town north of Boston and yes, we had several hours of sideways heavy snow, fierce wind, and whiteout. But we got a bit under a foot, my part of town never lost power (areas around me did), and all in all it wasn’t nearly as bad as other parts of Massachusetts.

Shoveling was easy; the dog couldn’t make up his mind if he wanted to be in or out. Finally my wife got back home and dealt with indecisive goofball dog. I don’t think it even took an hour of shoveling to clear the sidewalk and stoop and dig out the cars.

36" in Providence. Man.

Montreal wasn’t that far from the edge of the storm. We got nothing. Meanwhile - the storm kept moving east, and parts of Newfoundland ended up with 1.5 m (about 60 inches) of snow. (drone footage starts at 3:22) Paradise, Newfoundland & Labrador after 144 cm of snow in one week! - YouTube

I went out this morning to finish the driveway and rake the 60’ of back roof, and discovered to my delight that the same heavy winds that piled up the snow everywhere also cleared the roof (edge of roof visible in picture, I had no interest in wading into the back yard).

For all that it snowed more than 12 hours, we ended up with just slushy paved areas and maybe 3" accumulated on the yard. It’s sunny and creeping towards 40°, with 50s promised the next couple of days. Long range forecast so far is snow-free. Here’s hoping…

Noon yesterday was the last measurement for our town, but four neighboring towns had 32.5, 32, 32, and 31.8, so I have a theory.

That said, without an official weather station I wonder if there’s a tendency to exaggerate.

Those unfortunates in Newfoundland have really been getting hammered. Their total makes our 20" on Long Island NY look insignificant.

And power restoration on Cape Cod looks slow, now at 83.9% out.

One of my nieces attends Brown University in Providence, RI, where they got 37.9 inches of snow. She sent us some pictures of the impressive snowdrifts, and said that the campus was closed yesterday and today. But, she has power at her apartment, and went grocery shopping before the storm, so she’s safe and comfy.

My coastal town north of Boston on Cape Ann had several hours of horizontal snow whiteout, but in the end we only got about 13 or 14 inches. Unfortunately there’s more snow forecast off and on for the next week or so, hopefully a lot less than the blizzard.
