I thought it was OK. Very much in the mould the old series. Analysts at CTU doing undercover work and avoiding bosses, some torture scenes, crazy family relationships (our hero’s brother is a major drug lord in The Projects), some terrorists who are plain, homegrown white guys (the teacher), and a shadowy figure who may or may not be tied up in this mess (the president’s quiet assistant).
I recorded it. Will watch in the next couple days.
The casting is certainly different this time. I’m not sure the series will work without Keifer Sutherland or any of the other original actors.
I will watch for a few episodes and see how it goes. I hope it can recapture the excitement of the original series.
I watched it, mostly enjoyed it.
Positives:
-Main character (Eric?). Not quite Jack Bauer, but so far as reasonable a replacement as we’re likely to see
-The PTSD-y guy (Grimes?). I like the idea that they’re chasing someone who is basically a “good guy”, who they won’t want to kill. Also the fact that he feels screwed over by the US helps fight against the generally pro-USA pro-military leanings that 24 has often had
-Main character’s wife pushing the glass out of the window to distract the baddies was a good way for her to be helpful without suddenly unrealistically developing kung fu skills or whatever
-I like the idea of a double-blind checkin for the members of the seal team. Not sure it makes technical sense, but I appreciate the effort.
-I like the little nerd-off between the tech at CTU and the new female tech who he was making fun of. Hopefully they end up on the same team at some point
-The acting and dialog is generally competent, as were the action scenes
Negatives:
-The extremely douche-y new director of CTU, who was supposedly trusted by Miranda Otto’s character enough to make the director of CTU, but is so obviously untrustworthy that of course we suspect it’s all a fakeout, unless it’s a DOUBLE fakeout, etc, etc, and the very contrived way that suspicion falls on him. Only three people had access to the new identities? Bullshit. What about the actual people who did the actual work of setting everything up? And then she jumped way too quickly to tasering him.
-I’m very skeptical about the high school stuff
I enjoyed the original 24 series immensely, but for some reason failed to work up the necessary enthusiasm to watch the Jack Bauer-less edition last night.
In the train yard, when New Jack was being pursued by 3 men with automatic rifles and he had a pistol, I thought, “Pshaw, those odds would have been in Jack’s favor!”
I’m watching it.
24 became such a parody of itself, there was always a reason to watch, be it to laugh at the ridiculous nature of it, or to actually become embroiled in Bauer’s fate (despite knowing he’s indestructible).
Like MaxTheVool, I’m not sure it’ll work now without Kiefer’s charisma, but let’s wait an see. It seems obvious though they’re sticking to the old template of:
1st third of the season — Set up and reveal the nature of the threat to AMERICA!
2nd third of the season — Uncover the thug’s ring that’s enacting such atrocities, thereby torturing and killing those that are acting out the lower-levels of the…
3rd third of the season — …CONSPIRACY!!! High level government peeps are the real perps here. It’s up to [del]Bauer[/del] Carter and CTU to expose them and bring them down, once and for all! …until next season…
You mean Black Jack? He’s even got a Jack Sack now. Anyone else suspicious of the president’s aid? She’s just too quite for her own good…
Black Jack, with a Jack Sack is undergoing a Black Jack Attack!™
In 24, everyone’s a suspect. Especially if they’re too quiet or aloof. Except Chloe, of course.
Watch for the product placement as he munches a Big Mac.
Or a Tic Tac, to keep things up-to-date.
So, she’s not only a Muslim, but she was photographed at a radical mosque. Those photos are pretty laughable, though, since she is not wearing a hijab, the most likely explanation is that she is arguing with the Imam. Her uncovered head is totally out of place in a Mosque where radical Islam was fomenting.
Not sure who looks less related… Jimmy Smits and Gerald Mcraney or the new CTU girl and her supposed cousin the late Edgar. Someone should ask Miss Driscol…
No where in the same league as 24 original recipe, but Kiefer’s on that stupid “everyone’s dead, you be president” show, so what can you do.
The “dead” student getting up and walking out to the sports field was so dumb it reminded me of Kim’s storylines. The new lead’s wife and the drug dealers stuff is pretty bad too.
And of course all the muslims were able to take out the special forces guys because the whitest guy on the show ratted them out… Jeesh it took how many seasons for Jack’s dad to turn out to be a villain, Senator Smits gets it 3 eps in…
There’s no way the real villains will turn out to be Muslims anyway.
Oh. This whole time, I thought it would be a prequel, given the name.
Thought I’d bump this to say that while nothing really earth-shattering has been happening, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the show. Good action, good pacing, a few actual surprises, not lingering on anything boring or stupid for too long.
It definitely feels like 24, and not one of the stupid seasons.
Not necessarily. I always called him the anti-Batman. He always succeeded when winging it and always failed when he knew right where the bad guys are and was set to ambush them. Preparedness is his kryptonite.
So it would depend on whether he was prepared for them or not.
