24: Season 8: Episodes 3-4 (6:00pm - 8:00pm)

Renee has flipped the fuck out! I like.

Couple of thoughts thus far…

I’m liking Prinze better than I thought I would. He’s making a decent accounting of himself I think.

I love Chloe to death, but the passive aggressiveness is a bit much at times.

I thought Hastings was going to be ‘just an asshole’ at first but he seems to be coming around a bit now. I was surprised on Sunday night when he was willing to turn a blind eye to Chloe and Jack’s OP. He might still turn into a Reasonable Authority Figure yet. He probably won’t be as cool as Bill was but he has potential.

Starbuck needs to stick a shiv in her ex-boyfriend as quickly as possible. She needs to nip this shit in the bud before he becomes a real problem. She doesn’t need this kind of distraction right now.

I’m enjoying this season a lot more right now than I have the previous few. Is this a return to form? Only time will tell…

Renee was friggin’ awesome. (That bears repeating.) :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m glad they brought FBI Chick back!

Renee was so hot the few seconds before she got to cutting off that guy’s hand.
Also, is Chloe going to get to wield a gun this season?

Me too – Cole’s been a cool character so far.

He’s still too much into that “I’m so awesomely efficient and in control” mode to be as cool as Bill yet. Time will tell.

She should introduce him to Agent Rowrrrr. I bet Renee would be glad to help.

Does anyone else think Hassan’s brother looks like Jason Schwartzman? It’s killing me.

Yes. A Middle Eastern Jason Schwartzman.

Why is Hastings always hunched over? Is he too tall for the set?

Starbuck needs to space the ex. Send him right out the airlock. Why do the writers always do this sort of story. It sucks every time. How is this going to be different from the hobbit’s story a season or two ago?

It’s good that people are starting to actually listen to Jack, though Hasting’s own ego got in the way for a second. At least he knew that Jack has the Pres on speed dial.

Where’s the story with the horn dog going? Bet he gets tied up in the Starbuck/Cole/ex mess.

Some predictions:
Renee doesn’t last the season
Starbuck doesn’t last the season
Horn Dog doesn’t last 8 hours
Cole survives

Wait, what??? How did I not know when 24 was coming back? How did I completely miss two nights of this show!? Not to mention the associated commentary on here and on Dave Barry’s blog? OMGWTFBBQ, and I can’t even read the threads for fear of spoilage. :smack:

I missed a few minutes of the broadcast.

What happened from the time Jack was being beaten up by the bad cop (after the asian cop went upstairs) until the time the asian cop started driving Jack to the UN.

I was completely shocked that the police officer that helped Jack and drove him to the UN did NOT end up dead. My wife and I both agreed that he was not long for this world when he took off in the car with Jack, but then we didn’t see him again.

I’m enjoying this season so far… but I believe we have our first baffling bad-guy plot that makes no sense. So the bad guy plot is for the good guys to determine that there’s an assassination plot, and that there’s an inside person, and then they’ll deduce that it’s Meredith, then find the file on her laptop, decrypt it, be fooled by the fake bomb threat, evacuate the UN, then as hassan is driven out, boom.

So, two things make no sense at all:
(1) the bad guys seemed to know exactly when hassan would be evacuated. How could they have known precisely how long it would take CTU to decrypt the file?
(2) the whole plan hinges on CTU learning that there’s an inside man. But CTU only learned that from the informant, who the bad guys were trying to kill!

If you’re in the U.S., you can catch all four of the premiere episodes on Hulu, at least for the rest of this week.

They were only sorta trying to kill him. Gotta keep up appearances, you know?

(Or… maybe Mr. Aruz really knew about Farhad’s involvement, and Farhad, Davros, et al. were relying on CTU tracking down the lead through Ms. Reed’s computer. I can only assume that they were not planning on Aruz getting Jack Bauer involved; surely the terrorists in 24-land have learned that lesson by now. :p)

uhhh… let’s see…

Bad Cop winds up for the mother of all beat-downs (the preceding beat-down was just foreplay) and Jack manages to stand up and clock the guy in the face with the top of the chair. He then throws himself into the wall, breaking the chair. He takes a piece of chair and starts beating the bad cop (who crashed through drywall) with it and the asian cop comes down and orders both to stop it, waving pistol at both Jack and the Bad Cop. I think there might have been a confirmation that Jack was CTU in there somewhere.

Asian cop calls the lieutenant to report it in, and Jack begs the asian cop to find out from the lieutenant what the cop who got killed’s duty assignment was. Upon finding out that it was a security detail at the UN I believe that’s when they started driving to the UN.

I think with their plan foiled, they went with it as quickly as possible.

There you have it. They were going to wait and blow up Hasan when he drove over that manhole at some later time, but once CTU discovered there was a plot, they had to accelerate the schedule. Like all good 24-verse terrorists, they have a series of contingency plans in place. The first one being planting the files on the reporters laptop. Undoubtedly there is a mole in CTU and he/she stayed late one night last week to see how long it would take to decrypt the file, so they could plan accordingly.

Makes sense.

Thank you.

But unlike all 24-verse terrorists, this one made sense.

Is it me or is this the best season in a LONG time?

Not just you. I’m enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would.

I think all the actors are much better this time. It’s nice to see that team Jack and Chloe is not America’s only effective counter terrorist strategy. That at least we have decent agents like Ortiz on the job as well. And also the completely insane Agent Walker.

At least the terrorists who failed to kill Captain Acevedes* don’t have to worry about reporting their failure, thanks to Jack Sure they screwed up, but Jack took care of the exit interview.

*A The Shield reference for the dead informant. I like the actor (Benito Martinez) and was sad to see him gone so quickly. I was hoping he could be Jack’s whipping boy for another 6 or 7 episodes.

And Jack can lord that over him all season…!

Hmmmm… good points. I think, though, that the assassination was supposed to take place later – so perhaps we don’t know what the original complete plan was. After Davros took out the chopper and knew that the informant had reached CTU agents before, Davros made a call to the brother saying he needed to step up the assassination to a sooner time.

Of course, he had already planted the encrypted-fake-bomb-threat file on Meredith’s laptop – so perhaps the original plan was to “out” her in some other way, like an anonymous tip phoned in, then wait for the bomb threat file to be deciphered (which had encryption that they knew CTU would be able to break in reasonably short order).

I think the whole “going to the cop buddy’s house and trying to get him to switch shifts” bit was Davros stepping up the timetable. Sounds like the attempt was originally going to be later (like on his shift?).

As for knowing exactly when Hassan would be evacuated – I doubt he knew that. He just got to the early shift instead, then waited for Farhad to phone him that the evacuation was starting, and what car Hassan was in.

Of course, this still means Davros had to know WHAT the evacuation route would be – (only one exit from the UN parking structure?) – to know what manhole to plant the bomb in before everything started.
