Alright, so I’ve posted before about I have no life, no girlfriend, no motivation, and all that jazz. So I’m looking for ideas on what I can do this 3-day weekend, that may be fun, educational, fulfilling, or any number of other things that may or may not improve my life!
I’m down for any and all ideas, no matter how crazy, outlandish, or perhaps even level-headed they may be. However, this does come with a disclaimer: I reserve the right to not actually follow-up on any of these ideas and simply do what I do most weekends, which is sitting on my ass reading the SDMB, among other interweb things. And to be perfectly honest, that is probably what will end up happening, but please humor me anyway.
Pertinent info? You got it: I’m 23, dude, has car/motorcycle, no applicable real-world skills, and money (at least for this weekend) isn’t much of an issue.
Go volunteer. My local libraries are always looking for people to volunteer. I’ve reshelved books, and they also LOVE to have people check the shelves for misplaced books.
There are other volunteer activities, too.
Go to the zoo, the museum, whatever touristy spots your town has.
Take up a new hobby.
If you are really, really desperate, you can clean your house. Or mine.
Of course, the first idea that gets posted is what I did for a living for 4 years: Shelved books at a library Other ideas are solid though, and I’m sure there are other places I can look, libraries aside, looking for volunteers.
Fly to Humboldt County and come rock climbing with me! I’m a 24yo dude with no life either, and school starts next week.
Or… go kayaking under the GGB. Break into Alcatraz. BASE jump off the TransAm buliding. Decipher the Adobe semaphore in San Jose without looking at the solution. Drive 100mph on the 17, visit beautiful Big Sur, then stop by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz on your way back. Go to Vegas. Get laid. Visit some museums. Thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail. Visit Alaska. Go scuba diving. Take a skydiving lesson. Drive to SoCal and Visit Universal Studios, Magic Mountain, Disneyland, the Huntington Library, the Reagan Library, the Getty, Hollywood, SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and Wildlife Safari, the La Jolla coastline and the aquatic center all in one go.
There’s so much to do! What are your hobbies aside from the intraweb?
I remember you now, Red. I knew the name sounded familiar, it just took me a couple of hours to place it. So yeah, obviously you know I’m a 24 yo dude… but everything else I said still applies =) Carry on.
Check the weekend section of the local newspaper or their website, read the fine print, find something that looks interesting, and do it, especially if you’ve never done anything before. That or find a state park and go do something there. Hiking in winter can be fun, and they may have other winter activities scheduled. One up in the woods north of here has a Winter Festival planned for this weekend, I think.
Do you like movies? There are a ton of excellent movies playing now. Milk, Slumdog Millionaire, Let The Right One In, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler, Gran Torino, Doubt, The Reader, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, I’ve Loved You So Long, Marley & Me and Cadillac Records are all worth seeing in my opinion. I also adore The Spirit, but I think I’m the only person alive who loves that movie, so I can’t recommend it, because you’re probably not as weird as I am. I haven’t seen it because it hasn’t opened in Chicago yet, but in doing a check of what’s playing in the Bay area, Waltz With Bashir is playing, and it’s supposed to be phenomenal. Man Bites Dog is also playing there, but you’d have to be a real sick fuck to “enjoy” it. I did, but I’m weird AND a sick fuck. It’s the very blackest of blackheart, black comedies. Damn, Vertigo is playing on a big screen there, you lucky sod. Synecdoche, New York is playing, if you like confusing but interesting, Lynchian bizzareness.
You’ll have the first “new” episode of Battlestar Galactica on Friday night, NFL Conference Championship games, and there just might be some coverage about some politician getting sworn in early next week. You may have heard of him…funny name…right on the tip of my tongue…
Buy an Xbox and Fallout 3 then try to finish it in the 3 days. Rent them if can’t justify the cash to buy them. Wait you wanted something life changing and inspiring. Nevermind.
I need to get you and my daughter together. You’re a bit young (she’s 29), but it’s workable, I think…what’s your security clearance? How do you feel about women who can break boards with their feet? She hasn’t broken a board with her hand or head yet. She loves manga and anime and P&P RPGs, as well some video and computer games. She is NEVER at loose ends.
Plus my husband wants grandkids NOW. Are you fertile?
