Lately I’ve been getting a bit disenchanted with the process of seeking out new music. It’s getting harder and harder to find things that grab my attention; instead, most of what I hear reminds me of something I’ve already heard.
That’s why I was shocked by my reaction to stumbling across the band 3. Before I’d even finished listening to the first song, I was hooked. I ordered the album The End is Begun immediately and spent the next few days obsessively listening to the few tracks they’ve published.
If you’re a fan of any of the bands mentioned in the thread title, you owe it to yourself to check these guys out. Be sure to listen to all the songs on their MySpace page, and check out “Been to the Future” and “Alien Angel”.
Hey, not bad! Kind of prog metally without the faux sinister baggage.
However, if I had a nickel for every band that is described as sounding like the Kinks but sound nothing like them (including my own, heh), I could hire Ray Davies to be my personal musical manservant.
“Been to the Future” and “See Emily Play” are the songs that really reminded me of the Kinks. It’s certainly possible that I’m completely off base, but it was my initial reaction.
Well, I can see it in See Emily Play…Pink Floyd did start out playing Kinks covers and the like, and pretty much all of Ray Davies’ contemporaries either covered or copied his songs.
Actually, I reckon you could trace a whole lot of stuff back to the Kinks…heavy metal and punk rock both owe something to the early Kinks.
And Been to the Future does have a certain lilt to it.
As An Arky alluded to, it’s actually a cover of an early Pink Floyd song. I can see where you’d get the Kinks though, because the cover sounds a little like them. I don’t like what they do to the melody though. Actually even that is starting to grow on me.
