30 Day Song Challenge, number 12: A Song You Like From a Band You Hate

I wouldn’t say hate, but I’ve not been impressed with Sam Smith.
Until i heard, “Money On My Mind”.

The Smiths, Life Isn’t Fair.

Grand Funk Railroad, I’m Your Captain. Heard it on an airplane of all places in 1973, stayed with me all these years. Otherwise I have absolutely no use for them at all.

Copacabana by Barry Manilow

XD (I jest)

What can I say? The song is irresistibly goofy and the way he sings “she lost! her! mind!” is hilarious.

Yeah. Came in here without an answer and that’s the best one I’ve seen.

I really hate U2 and all they do and represent. Yet I love ‘Stuck in A Moment’ because of the off the beat lyrics in the chorus. I’ve linked to the lyrics so you don’t have to look at Bonio.

That’s interesting because I only ever knew him from his antics and assumed him to be a no talent waste of airtime. I recently downloaded several of his albums and liked almost everything except your pick.

Anywho, I’d have to say Lit Up by Buckcherry. It’s definitely not my favorite song and I wouldn’t say I am willing to expend the energy to actively hate the band, but they certainly exist on opposite sides of indifference.

Ah, thanks for mentioning them! I was coming up blank, but I do hate U2. But Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me, Kill me is a guilty pleasure. Or at least, used to be; I’m re-listening right now, and find myself rather ambivalent—which is still a huge improvement over the majority of their oeuvre.

I basically feel that way about Achtung Baby. U2 have never been my band (no disrespect; they’re brilliant at what they do), but that album is the one of theirs I own.

I really don’t like Rod Stewart. But I won’t change the station when Maggie May comes on the radio.

I suspect I am not alone in this.

Funny you should say that. People probably think I’m a big Rolling Stones fan because I named my dog “Ruby Tuesday.” Fact is I read an article about the woman the song was written for and her father described her as a “strong, independent woman”. That’s how my dog got her name.

I can’t stand The Steve Miller Band and didn’t find out until I was an adult that he does a song I used to rollerskate to when I was a kid, “Abracabra”. I like that song.

The whole boy band thing in the 90’s? ~cringe~

But this song is catchy and ok fine!!..I kinda like it. The octave change right after the bridge may give me a goosebump or two.

Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way

Wait, we’re doing this again? I’d given up hope.

Cool idea for this one, though. . .what do I pick? A song I really like from a band I don’t otherwise listen to, a song I kind of like from a band I actively despise. . .what to do. . . what to do.

Aaahhhhh, here we go.
I against I, by Mos Def & Massive Attack

I’m a classic rock kind of guy, but I can step outside my comfort zone for this tune. I first heard it when watching the movie, “Blade 2.” Liked it ever since.

Not to sidetrack us, but what do they do and represent? I’m a mild fan. Very mild. They have 200+ songs and I probably like 15-20 at most. One solid album over 30+ years.

Still, I don’t know what they do or represent aside from making pretty adequate music.

I can’t stand Lou Reed, never could.

But I like “Perfect Day.” (Though it would sound even better with almost any other vocalist.)

Well, at least One was somewhat vindicated by Johnny Cash’s cover, but it’s still just not for me. Bono sings it as if he were enunciating some deep truths and insights he is uniquely privileged to access, while Cash presents it in a simple, almost naive way. The song works only in the latter case, because frankly, it’s nothing really deep.

I think that’s maybe my biggest problem with U2: their songs just never live up to the pomp with which they present them.

I really dislike country music and therefore the artists who perform it. But there is one country song on my shuffle that is so closely aligned to a certain time and place for me that I have grown to enjoy it and am not diving for the ff button when it comes on.

“Where You Are” by Rascal Flatts

This is mine as well. I thought I’d had no use whatsoever for Bieber or anything he touches. But damn, this a perfect little tune.

Since Wook stole mine, I’ll go with Heart’s Tell it Like it Is. I don’t despise Heart but never cared for them either. Until I heard their version of this 1960s tune.
