Well, at least One was somewhat vindicated by Johnny Cash’s cover, but it’s still just not for me. Bono sings it as if he were enunciating some deep truths and insights he is uniquely privileged to access, while Cash presents it in a simple, almost naive way. The song works only in the latter case, because frankly, it’s nothing really deep.

I think that’s maybe my biggest problem with U2: their songs just never live up to the pomp with which they present them.

U2’s big message is Uplift. A hard feeling to sell within rock. Johnny isn’t selling the song with uplift; that wasn’t how Johnny was wired ;).

Bruce is somewhere between the two. He’s all about Uplift but much more bittersweet vs. U2.

I’m not a U2 guy, I think because I am a Social Distortion guy ;). Different world views. I’d love to hear a conversation between Bono and Mike Ness.

Seriously about the uplift. A lot of their songs sound like love poems to a woman when they’re really about God.

Hmm, I always post hate Rush/love Subdivisions in these threads, so I’ll go with hate Madonna/like Live to Tell.
