5 reasons not to buy the iPhone 4

Steve Jobs hates left handed people.

I dunno, I got mine on Wednesday. I am not experiencing any of the problems people keep talking about. This is my first “nice” phone and I am greatly enjoying it. There are a few annoyances, like the text message noises thing, but overall I am satisfied.

And I find the Android vs Apple stuff to be obnoxious. Can’t people just buy what they like and not worry about everyone else? I have to ignore comments on places like Engadget and Wired if I want to read any article about phones because the 2 camps think the other are stupid/evil/lame/losers and it’s a bummer. It’s just a phone!

Every. Single. Time. Apple releases a new product there is a a huge Tsunami of “news” pointing out all of the problems. Like the 3GS overheating, or screens breaking. Then, once this dies away, we find that there never was any real issues, and it’s the result of 1,000,000 people all getting a new toy on the same day, and reporting anything that doesn’t work for them.

It’s going to be the same with this antenna “issue.”

The only reason I’m skeptical of this being the case with the antenna issue is that I work in the field and Apple’s well-known within the business for being aggressively stubbornly archaic in their antenna design methodologies.

Because the little Samsung something or other flip phone that came with my contract a few years ago makes phone calls perfectly fine.

I traded my 3G for an iPhone 4 on Thursday and I am thrilled with it. It’s an incredible device and is significantly faster than the 3G. Apps that took ten seconds to load are now nearly instantaneous. The LCD image is beautiful.

Verizon definitely has better service in my area but Verizon is CDMA and I need a GSM phone for when I travel overseas.

The EVO might have more pixels in its camera but pixel density isn’t everything. Here is a good article showing side by side comparison of the iPhone4 and EVO taking video.

There appears to be a software fix for the antenna “death grip” issue that will be released in the next couple of days. Cite.

In the end, it’s a matter of taste but that Yahoo! article is really lame. I am no Apple fanboy. The only Apple products I have ever owned are two iPhones. My next laptop will be Windows based for sure.

Actually this might be a Murphy’s Law type situation. The problem appears when the hand grounds the antenna with part of the case that is NOT an antenna, changing its properties. Why didn’t they find it in testing? Because the field units had plastic camouflage to make them look like a 3GS…insulating the antenna from the user’s hand.

That and if 600,000 phones are sold, and 60 folks are in a situation where the reception is poor enough for this to affect them, guess who speaks the loudest? The 60 with the problem, or the other 530,000 that don’t?

My guess: Apple will mea-culpa it if it’s not fixable in software and offer their $29 stupid plastic bumper cases for free or cheap.

You want to make a side bet?

I thought this was hilarious.

And I am posting from my evo which happens to be my only source of internet.

Clearly, because the only thing that comes up when I click on that link are four video links, no primary video, and nothing else

I’m not sure what you are linking to.

For the love of Og, let’s try it again…

As an experiment, I would suggest that people watch this video first with the audio off and determine for themselves which captured video is better and why.

I did this (incidentally) and was surprised by which video was asserted to be of better quality – seemed rather astonishingly contrary to expectation.

I’ll accept the opinion from experts in the field I trust about it, but I ain’t betting until I pry the case off one myself. (speaking of reasons not to buy an iPhone.)

That’s the only way I am getting one of their bumpers. No way I am paying $30 when I can buy a knockoff at a mall kiosk for $2 in a week or two.

Apple is fucked with the peripherals.

USB to iPhone connector: $20.00 at the Apple store or $1.40 at monoprice?

Car Charger for iPhone. $30.00 at the Apple store or $6.00 at hdaccessories?

Yes, I’ll get my bumper at one tenth of the price somewhere else.

The easy solution for the antenna problem is to put a piece of clear tape over the antenna interfaces. Regular scotch tape will work just fine but there is way better 3M material out there. If Apple does any kind of non-software fix it will be to give out little strips of tape to people. Some clear nail polish would probably work as well.

Well, I did that, and now I’m baffled by the video guy’s assertions too.

I heard that the president of at&t had his wedding today. Supposedly the service was really nice but the reception was horrible.

Man, I’m way ahead of you. I’m bucking the trend of bucking the trend of rampant consumerism. My iPhone 4 is great, and kicks your 3GS’s ass!

As far as I can tell, neither the EVO nor the iPhone 4 nor the Galaxy S are available in my country.

Just got my iPhone 4 yesterday, a replacement for my 3G. It’s a spectacular phone. I can’t get over how fast it is. Everything seems to just work. I would have never come to the boards on my 3G, let alone post.

But hey, use what you like.
