50th anniversary of Hoffnung Festival

The first Hoffnung festival, the Hoffnung Music Festival Concert, was given on November 13, 1956 in Royal Festival Hall.

What was a Hoffnung festival? Think of it as the original that PDQ Bach copied.

You may know Gerard Hoffnung from his humorous reading of the “Bricklayer’s Letter” before the Oxford Union. He also created concerts which included send-ups of classical pieces as well as original compositions.

The first concert opened with the announcement, “Owing to circumstances over which the LCC and the management of the hall have no control, tonight’s program will be given exactly as advertised.”

Some of the send-ups were[ul][li]Donald Swann’s whimsical arrangement of the second movement of Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony, which included celesta and blowing on water-filled bottles.[]A Leopold Mozart concerto for alphorn played on a garden hose with a brass mouthpiece.[]“Concerto Popolare”, where the orchestra and the piano soloist disagreed on what famous concerto was being played.[]an arrangement of a Chopin mazurka for four tubas (Hoffnung was a tuba player). [/ul][/li]
Original compositions included[ul]
[
]variations on “Annie Laurie” arranged for hurdy-gurdy, heckelphone, serpent, harmonium and other instruments.“A Grand, Grand Overture” which included solos for a (mechanical) floor polisher, ended by being shot with a rifle. [/ul]

Wow, fifty years! And the hilarious “Concerto Popolare” has never been equaled.

Wow. I didn’t know it was still running – I had a record (remember vinyl?) ages ago that cracked me up every time I heard it. And the bricklayer’s story has been oft-repeated, even in emails, without crediting Hoffnung. The emails aren’t funny, by the way, because all the humor in that story comes from his pauses, intonation, and dry delivery.

Are there CDs?

I have a 2-CD set put out by EMI in 1989: the number is CMS 7 63302 2. It contains the Hoffnung festivals from 1956, 1958 and 1961, i.e., what was originally on 3 LPs.

I forgot to link the official website: The MusicWeb Gerard Hoffnung Web Site - part of MusicWeb International - Len Mullenger

As to the the bricklayer’s story, I’m sure it predates Hoffnung’s wonderful reading.

C K Dexter Haven, I don’t know if you can say it’s still actually running. But I bought a VHS NTSC tape in the 90s of a recreation (1972, I think). And there have been others.

Oddly, you can arrange for a Hoffnung concert here: http://www.north-house.com/html/hoffnung/index.htm
