When I originally saw the thread it had 600 replies and I thought “oh there’s no way I’ll get through that” but then I slogged through it all and if I look away for 10 minutes there’s another 50 replies. If I go to bed, it’ll be up to 2000 by tomorrow.

History is littered with smart demagogue-dictators who took power despite their predecessors being punished. If they get their hands on the levers of power they don’t say “gee I better not do anything criminal because I might be punished when I lose the next election”. They just make sure there is no next election (that they can lose).

Look at any failed state. Once the cycle starts, the stakes of losing office become so high no one ever goes voluntarily, which means they don’t go except involuntarily and then the price they pay is so high that the next guy is even more determined never to lose office. And so it goes.

The reason Trump will probably leave the White House quasi-voluntarily and the change of power will be essentially peaceful is precisely because Trump thinks he can blag his way out of anything and is too stupid to know that may not be true. If he and his enablers knew that the last assholes that did what they have done ended up in the electric chair or jailed for life, the only way they would be leaving would be at the point of a gun. Or in a box.

Don’t get get me wrong I know where you are coming from, but the fascism horse is very close to the door of the US democracy stable. And a clumsy attempt to shoo it back in may just end up causing it to bolt.

This is bad logic. For one thing, you have no way of knowing how many people chose not to try and become a dictator because the risk was too great. For another, the penalty for trying to be a dictator is always bad, and every wannabe dictator knows that.

Trump is going to leave because he has no choice, not because he is willing to do so–we’ve seen that over and over. No dictator of any stripe ever willingly steps down. That’s part of the definition of a dictator.

We’re not being clumsy. We’re following democracy and the idea that no one is above the law. You’re advocating we abandon that which we are trying to save.

On a night where we had to stop terrorists from destroying our democracy, you’re saying we should give into a terrorist because they might destroy our democracy. If we do, democracy is already destroyed.
