A Chronicly Early MMP

Acts of kindness during the plague.

I went to a gas station/convenience store to exchange a propane tank. Mrs. Plant (v.3.0) likes grilled food.
The young lady at the store started to take me out to the propane rack and realized she had to take my money first. “It’s the perfect time, there are no customers.” She unlocked the rack, “Oh no, the place is filling up!” “I can wait,” I said. “No”, she said. “here, please lock it up for me. I trust you!”

Their bottled propane was only $16.00 instead of $24.00. All the tanks felt like they were half filled.
No good turn goes unpunished.

dammit.

I saw plenty of paper towels, and it’s no longer a problem here to find toilet paper even.

In the baking aisle some places were also low on baking powder, and mixes like Bisquick. But those weren’t completely out. Very strange.

And I like making soup too. I have onions, corn(canned) and potatoes. There’s a sort of chowder I make. Hmmm, sounds like I have things planned for Monday.

Yup, can’t get yeast anywhere.

Friends all over the country are saying the same… I’d luckily bought a pot of it not long before this started, though I’m gonna run out soon at this rate. I can still find it online, but the prices are waaay higher’n normal, and it’s all ebay sellers and the like- half of which are selling little baggies of it scooped from catering size tubs. I wonder if anyone’s been busted dealing what turned out to be yeast yet…

I’m seeing 1lb bricks on Amazon at what seems like semi-reasonable prices, and I believe you can freeze yeast without hurting it. Just get it nice and warm to use it.

As for the yeast, I just bought a jar a couple weeks ago. Super Walmart had tons of it. I do freeze it, when I buy it in larger quantities. You can always get some at GFS, if you’ve got one nearby. They always have it, in my experience.

I’m pooped. I made two batches of blackberry jam, today. Well, I made it this morning. It was all done, and dishes washed, before noon. I ended up with 10 pints. I grew the blackberries, myself. In the backyard. I picked them as they ripened, and tossed them into the freezer. I had a bit more than two gallons frozen. I made a bigass blackberry pie for Thanksgiving, so, some of them went for that. The rest of them, which was a solid 1 1/2 gallon, were taking up too much real estate in the freezer. So, I turned them into jam. I did have to make a run to the store for a bag of sugar, though. I only had enough for the first batch. Always something. Anyway, it’s all done, and I’m trying to be lazy. I did get a nap, so, there’s that. I took a shower, and I still have a load of laundry to do. It can wait until tomorrow. Unless I get a second wind, and do up the laundry, just get it out of the way.

It has been a dreary day, with little sunshine. We did get a few sprinkles. It’s warm-ish, though. 62*. Not bad. It’s feeling a bit stuffy. Of course, using the water canner made it overly warm in here, too. I have the a/c on. That should take some of the humidity out of the air.

Wishing everyone a peaceful evening!

I haven’t been able to find yeast here either. Granted, I haven’t looked everywhere, but still… (bisquik-type mixes are hard to come by too.)

I saw some on line offered for like 5X its usual price. No thanks. My search continues also.

Supper was good, if not as hot as I’d have liked it (temp, not spices) and I’m more stuffed than I’ve been in ages. And that’s without snarfing down the yummy yeast rolls - they gave us EIGHT!!! Daughter is happy about that.

I’ve measured out some hashbrowns to thaw for N.O.T. pancakes for tomorrow’s breakfast. I have a recipe that is virtually identical to Perkins’ and **FCD **lurves 'em.

Other than loading the dishwasher, I’m done for tonight.

I bought a pound of SAF instant yeast on Amazon a couple of weeks ago.

Yeast and flour are in short supply here as well. But if I had yeast and grains, I’d be making something a lot more fun than bread.:D. But I am making Paprika Chicken with roasted chicken rice and sauteed green beans and country ham for dinner.

I smoked a pork tenderloin this afternoon and we plan on Cuban sandwiches for dinner

I’ve seen some pretty easy-looking recipes for bisquick knockoffs involving basic pantry staples.

Any hope you’ll share that recipe?

Also, Gastro Obscura had an article on funerary foods, but left off Death Chicken.:dubious:

Anybody getting ready for the virtual potluck tomorrow afternoon? The virtual weather here is supposed to be good, so we could go outside, but it might be easier to knock around “indoors”

Mauser will be sure to beg but don’t give in to him. As my vet said “I’ve seen dachshunds that looked like watermelons with legs.”

Evening all. Nappage turned into sleepage as I spent nearly 3 hours abed. Now need to get some sustenance and…do not much of anything.

Haven’t looked for yeast, but paper towels and TP are making a slow comeback in terms of being able to find them.

nona, I’m tired just reading all the stuff you did to get the jam made. I’m not a food maker (as a food consumer I’m second to none). Hope it’s good.

FCM, I need to order up tomorrow’s dinner from Texas Roadhouse…thanks for the reminder!

They need a riding vacuum.

baker, check Pinterest out for making your own sourdough starter. I have some yeast on hand, but haven’t used it since being hunkered down.

Got the vacuum put together. It sucks. I finished vacuuming the apartment and found that my old vacuum had been slacking off worse than I thought. I vacuumed up a half a dog’s worth of hair (the new machine is for households with pets).

Made some scratch Hungarian mushroom soup for supper (I’m on a roll with the northern and eastern European dishes lately) and served it with some toasted rye flatbread, emmanthaler cheese and a mandarin. Twas good! Now, I’m binge watching Urban Legends.

What do you do with a pound of yeast? What is instant yeast?

actually here in ca the grocery stores are busting open their instore bakery supplies and selling them by the pound … my cousin’s friend bought 2 pounds of flour individually wrapped by the meat department and put in a big middle basket in the baking section

A pound of yeast will make a lot of bread. Instant yeast can be added to the dry ingredients while making bread. Dry active yeast must be proofed on warm water and sugar as a separate step when making bread. Both instant and dry active yeast have disappeared from the store shelves.

The Dinner Report

Fettuccine with Florentine sauce with large shrimps in it. A Longboard Lager before dinner (‘slippahs’ means ‘flip-flops’), and I’m on my third glass of vino.

There’s been a wild bunny in the front yard for an hour. We’re glad it feels safe here.

awww how cute

we had a bunny one of the neighbors left that the neighborhood adopted and he lived for years and we were going to put him in our yard becuase we started having a dog problem and one day we seen 3 dogs running down the street right after we seen him and then they came back around with one holding him as he was trying to fight his way out but i wasnt fast enough to catch them i found him on the next street over … all of a sudden someone pulls up to me in a van and says " oh have you seen a dog running around …me being very upset and pissed off said "no but if any dogs show up down xth street … were calling the pound or shooting them on sight becuase of what happened

all of a sudden the person in the van got an odd look on his face and commiserated about the bunny and took off … guess what … we never saw a stray dog in years after that … turns out it wasn’t so funny to let your dogs walk themselves …
