A cut and paste question...

I can’t cut and paste to make quotes as per the vb code directions either from the orig post or after I try to post reply. What am I doing wrong…or rather what is the proper way to cut and paste for quoting a previous poster?

I’m not any help, since I just did it and it worked fine. I usually use the “quote” button and edit from there.

Ok, you see what kniz did? He screwed it up, so don’t do that.

{quote}If you enclose what you want to quote like this, with the wavy brackets {} replaced with standard brackets , it will give you this:{/quote}

If it’s not going to be immediately clear, you should identify who said what you’re quoting. I usually do it this way:

MysterEcks said:

Note that what kniz did was to eliminate the slash (/), which in vB code means “end” or “stop.” With quoting that gives you nested quotes; I’ve seen some that managed to accidentally nest about a half dozen, which makes it completely unreadable. That’s why I almost always preview–I figure I don’t need any help looking stupid, since I’m so good at it by myself.

You can also cut and paste, but you have to use the cntrl-v keystrokes and not the paste from the, um, thingy at the top of the screen. The, er, bar menu. . . taskbar. . . drop-down whosiwhatis.
At least I know * I* can’t.

I’ve also have this problem. I can use the ‘quote’ button (see below)…

**
…but it was a hassle because I hade to ‘quote’, then edit, then type above it and when I hit the back button to quote another poster it deleted all that I had done.
I tried Biggirls sugestion with no luck (I’m on a Mac, if that matters).

So, if someone would pleeeease explain exactly how you cut and paste to quote and how to quote different posters in the same post eactly I would be very apprecative. (Like darkcool, I’ve tried C&Ping before and after ‘post reply’)
Sorry to be so dense.
Grrrrrr…

If you were on a PC and were using Internet Explorer, you could do the following: [ul][li]right-click on the quote button (rather than normal click). This brings up the context menu.[/li][li]click on “open in new window”. This brings up the reply window with the selected post formatted for quoting and leaves the original thread available to re-quote.repeat the previous steps for everybody you want to quote. You’ll have to use standard copy/paste to put the formatted quote in one reply.[/ul]Or just use standard select/copy/paste from the redisplay of the thread below your reply window and add the quote formatting yourself. If you have trouble copying the selected text, right click on it to bring up the context menu and if “copy” appears, click on it. If the thread is more than one page, the thread is not redisplayed, so this won’t work.[/li]
I hope that I’ve understood your situation correctly and that this answers your question. If not, please repost.

Well, thanks, rowrrbazzle, but as I said I have an Apple computer so that info didn’t really help.
The ‘cut’ funtion is not available to me under the select/ cut/ paste from the re-display of the thread below the reply window for some reason.
Other thoughts…?

Apart from excessive [tag][/tag] creation I see no other option. It is easy enough to have two browser windows open to copy and paste text from, but I don’t know why this wouldn’t work on a Mac.

 Never used one of those things.

Doh!
Copy not ‘cut’.

I’m better now…
Thanks all!
Steve

warmgun, you said that the “Copy” command isn’t available to you. The only way I this happens is if there’s nothing to copy. Have you highlighted text to copy? Forgive me if that sounds like a stupid/wiseass question, but I didn’t get the impression that you’d highlighted anything.

When I have to quote more than one person in one post, I use the quote button from the bottom of the first post I want to quote. Say, for example, I wanted to use something MysterEcks wrote as my first quote. I’d click the quote button under his post.

For the second person I want to quote, I use Copy and Paste. Let’s say for my second quote, I want to quote something kniz said. What I do is highlight the (quote)(i)Originally posted by MysterEcks)(/i) tag that I have from the above quoting and hit Command-C (Copy). (As you can guess, I’m on a Mac as well.) I then Paste (Command-V) the tags where I want to resume my post. Since I intend to quote kniz now, I delete MysterEcks’s name from the tags and type in kniz’s. I then highlight the parts of kniz’s post that I want, C & P, and then close the tags. And I preview.

This works well enough if the thread is only one page long. When you reply, the entire thread is included below the Post Reply text entry space. But in threads that are longer that one page, that isn’t the case. In longer threads, it just says (paraphrased): “This is a long thread. Click here to view it.” So what I do is click on the link and open the thread in a new window. (You can do this on a Mac by clicking and holding down your mouse button on a hyperlink. The contextual menu should pop up, and you need to choose “Open Link in New Window”.)

Early on, I too ran into the “hit Back and post gets deleted” problem, and my solution was to open a new window for my reply. I could then craft my post in this new window, and when I had to quote other posters, I would simply highlight what parts I wanted and then Copy and Paste it from the other window. You have to manually type in the (quote)(i)Originally posted by xxxx)(/i) codes, but 1) you can C & P that, too, and 2) it beats losing your entire multiposter-quoted post.

Thanks, AudreyK, for you insights.
For the record I said the cut function wasn’t available to me, not the ‘copy’. And, yes, I did highlight the text in question, though it’s not out of the question that I could overlook something so simple.
Further, I have had trouble opening a new window in which to reply in. I thought of that as well.
I think your suggestion of:

…is my best re-course.

Sorry for the broken post. I meant to hit ‘preview’.
when it rains it pours…

It makes posting fun, don’t it?

The ‘Cut’ command’s only going to be available when you’re highlighting something editable by you, the viewer of the webpage. For example, in this Post Reply text entry space, if I highlight a sentence of mine, ‘Cut’ becomes available. But if you wanted to include the Forum Rules underneath the SD banner, the ‘Cut’ command would remain grayed out, because the Forum Rules is text you can’t edit.

Occasionally, when I make long posts with quotes from three or more others, I wish the vBulletin software was smart enough to recognize a quoted sentence or phrase without me having to type in the (quote)(/quote) tags around it. Or maybe have little javascript buttons that will insert the coding for me. Something, anything, really, that will save me some keystrokes. I do, however, concede that this is simply laziness on my part, and the programmers of the vBulletin software should feel free to completely ignore me.
