A Doper is...

From this thread we have learned that there are quite a few Dopers here that were/are involved in the Boy Scout program.

One of the things the Boy Scouts have is the Scout Law which lists 12 attributes that all scouts should be (Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly… etc.).

This got me thinking: “What is the Straight Dope Law”? What attributes should all Dopers strive to possess to make them the best possible Doper that they can be?

It would start out just as the Scout Law does, but instead say:

“A Doper is…”

As the Scout Law lists single word adjectives to describe a Scout, so should the Doper Law attempt to do so, but I think that in order to accurately describe what a Doper should strive to be, the list can include 3-4 word descriptions as well.

So let’s start the Doper Law.
A Doper is…

  1. Sexy
  1. Snarky

sarcastic

  1. A critical thinker

5)Skeptical

  1. Good at speeling
  1. Not willfully ignorant
  1. A deft hand with his 1920s Style Death Ray.
  1. Opinionated (in a good way)
  1. Curious (in both senses of the word)
  1. Cite?!?

C’mon… #3 has to be “HI OPAL!” IIRC (its been a while since I’ve been on the boards).

  1. Selflessly willing to become Benevolent World Dictator.

Not being overly verbose in applying appropriate verbiage when communicating, articulating, or extrapolating on various and sundry ideas, opinions, theorems, hypotheses, rants or when participating in debates, arguments, flaming or outright poo-flinging in the forums. I’m speaking of course, on the quality of succinctness. A quality which of course every doper should by all means always model. Always. I mean it. Seriously.

Not knowing how to use apostrophes.

…Ogly.

clayton_e! Where you been, dude? Really? Oh, man. Bummer. Ehh, chin up, fumpty. Things will get better.

Welcoming…especially alien overlords and the like

Tolerant… but to a point.

… as a Doper does.

And now how about the Teeming Millions Oath:

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to fight ignorance,
And obey the Doper Law,
To research and cite my answers at all times,
While being quick-witted, and and more Cecil-like.
What do you think?
