Millions,
I remember really enjoying one of your signatures, back when I first signed up. Not that I don’t still love everyone, it’s just this one sticks out in my mind. After a few months of keeping my eyes open, I’ve decided to just ask. Who has that signature that’s a quote dealing with some sort of physics & how two people who studied it went mad/killed themselves. I recall the quote was from the beginning of a text book and ended “Now it is our turn to study _______”
So, who is it? And can I get the exact quote? I don’t know why I’m thinking of this this morning, but any help would be appreciated.
I couldn’t find anyone who had that as their signature, but the quote appears to be as follows:
“Ludwig Boltzmann, who spent much of his life studying statistical mechanics, died in 1906, by his own hand. Paul Ehrenfest, carrying on the work, died similarly in 1933. Now it is our turn to study statistical mechanics.” - David L. Goodstein “States of Matter”
Aha! That’s it! At some point, some one had this as their signature, I swear. Or else I hallucinated it. But that would have been a rather dissapointing hallucination, as far as those things go. Thanks Asimovian. If anyone knows who used to end their posts with that, I’d just be curious. The quote was the big brain-block though.
