A great guy and poster, Q.E.D. {RIP}

Does anyone know what happened ?

Didn’t notice this till now. Very sad, he gave a lot of his time trying to help others with questions.

dammit

That is too bad, he always had interesting things to say

RIP

I just heard the news from a thread over in General Questions (GQ).

I’m absolutely floored. He was so young–not much older than me.

GQ is where I generally ran across him, as you might expect. Because he loved to correct factual mistakes and misstatements, I always counted it as a “win” if I wasn’t the one being corrected.

As I stated in the GQ thread, rest in peace, Q.E.D. You will be missed. :frowning:

P.S. I wanted to add that I remember when Q.E.D. first joined the SDMB. As I recall, he joined the board with a splash, quickly making a name for himself as a veritable fount of knowledge.

He soon joined the ranks of the SDSAB, and wrote some great staff reports. I always thought that his reports had the perfect mix of factual information and irreverence (much like those of Cecil himself), perfectly exemplified by this report: Is poking a knife into the toaster really dangerous?

In addition, although he was a very prolific poster, he always had something intelligent to add to the discussion at hand.

I just found out via another thread. I don’t know what to say, I’m just sitting with my mouth open thinking “no… what? WHAT?”. I haven’t been here much lately but it was kind of at the back of my mind that there was someone’s posts I wasn’t seeing.
He was a great poster, his knowledge was amazing and while some people found him a little blunt, I appreciated his style. In fact I now recall reading a pointed comment from him in a trainwreck BBQ thread, was one of the funniest things I ever read on here.

Q.E.D. I miss you. I hope you left with no regrets and that the end wasn’t painful or traumatic.

Peace

Bloody hell. What a shock!!

I just found out.

When QED first started here I remember having some interesting interactions with him as he was trying to get a feel for the board. Once he got the hang of the place he became a prolific poster for few years. I thought he was a top bloke.

I was wondering if he ever ended up working with Mythbusters.

What a great loss. My condolences to his family.

It seems like I’m always one of the last ones to find out things like this.

Damn, what a loss. Q. E. D. was…damn, he just was.

He did, but not for very long.

Here’sthe thread in which he announced he had gotten the job.

A couple years laterhe mentioned that " I did it for a few months, but it turned out to be rather less fun and interesting than I’d hoped, once the novelty wore off. Nevertheless, it a was a neat experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’m still a big fan of the show."

Go easy bro.

I’m posting here over three years later but I just found of of Q.E.D’s passing from a fellow schoolmate.

I met Mike in first or second grade and knew him until the end of 7th grade. Reading some of the comments that said he could be a little abrasive means he hadn’t changed much

To y’all he was a beloved member. To me he was someone that came to my birthday parties and shared detentions with me, lol. I’m dead certain I have a picture of a birthday party in my back yard with him in it. I know for a fact I have a class picture for our third grade class (just found it a week ago) and he’s in it.

Mike was one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. He’d screw around with electronics in early middle school - who does that, really? (well, we did, lol). He was always getting in trouble for getting distracted and not doing his schoolwork…I clearly remember our second grade teacher (Mrs. Phillips, an evil, angry woman) marking off entire pages of his workbooks with big X’s because he hadn’t done a damned thing on them. Didn’t matter, he was already smarter than most of the class (if not all).

Another thing I clearly remember was playing kickball in 5th grade or so and while running the bases took a kickball to the head that dropped his skinny ass like a sack of potatoes. When he fell it knocked the wind out of him and he was wheezing (in that way that only having the wind knocked out of you can do) “I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe.” All of us kids got a good scare but needless to say he survived that. I’m chuckling at the memory - if I could record it out of my head I’d post it on YouTube - and also chuckling at the fact I’m sure he could explain how getting the wind knocked out of you works.

I don’t recall what he ended up doing in life but at one point he was a manager of some sort at a Radio Shack store. He got into trouble when they found out he registered radioshacksucks.com lololol. His message to me was “I registered radioshacksucks.com and ran a proxy off it so I could get around Radio Shack web filters. So what.” Cracked me up.

Miss ya, Mike.
There are

I miss the ol’ chap too. Even seeing this thread resurface on my subscriptions stirred some emotions. Fine, intelligent man, that one. Glad you got to see a different side of him!

I got in touch with another old friend who very recently visited his sister.

Suicide.

That makes me very, very sad

The cause of his death makes this thread even sadder. :frowning:

I’ve been bleary eyed.

Here’s his third grade class picture, taken in October of 1973 (I misnamed the file with 1976)

Ugh. 44??? That is way too early. I liked his posts.

Condolences. :frowning:

I have to admit it sent a shiver up my spine seeing a “RIP” thread come back as a zombie.

Such a waste. Argh.

Yeah. I miss him a lot.
