Yes, it has. The {RIP} was added shortly after the original post was made, but the “QED” was there all the time.
So, I guess I’m the only one who noticed and thinks it might be a good idea to fix. Oh well.
Good point. I changed it from QED to Q.E.D.
Farewell.
QED!
I wish you safe travels and much comfort for those who will miss you!
Bill
Sadly, life expectancy is not great for never-married guys in their 40s. High intelligence doesn’t seem to exempt you, either.
I saw this on the other board last week, and just thought to come here to offer my sincere condolences to all his friends.
I remember him - he probably didn’t know me, but I am saddened to learn of his death.
I just now saw this news. Although I did not interact with him, I knew the name, and it is sad to see someone so young is gone. I hope the pets that were so important to him are being well taken care of.
R.I.P., Q.E.D. You will be missed.
Bah. He knew everything.
Does anyone know what happened? He was so young.
This is what I’ve been wondering since the announcement.
I’ve been away from the board for some time, and just recently came back. Things were a bit different at first, but everything seemed to kind of fall back into place. It seems a few things have changed since I’ve been gone.
I knew/know nothing of the circumstances surrounding Q.E.D.'s suspension, nor do I care to know. From the way it sounds, I was lucky to miss out on those times. I happened upon the “In memoriam” sticky, and was really quite shocked.
Q.E.D. was the personification of the Dope to me for a long time. In a way, he always will be. A guy with a seemingly impossible collection of knowledge, and the wit to implement it.
Q.E.D. will always be part of the Dope lore. I miss him.
Aww, man. I only used to visit straightdope occasionally in the past, but even that was enough to take note of Q.E.D. He’s probably one of the few posters I would recognize. He always seemed like a great contribution to the site.
One more friend lost.
Please take care of yourselves for me.
(And I KNOW this isn’t ABOUT me!)
Just PLEASE take care of your precious selves and keep Q.E.D. in your heart and souls.
No more, please. No more.
Bill
Holy crap, I just found out about this! (Thanks HongKongFooey.)
Mike and I were very active on most of the electrical/electronic threads. Despite not having an engineering degree, he was very knowledgeable on all things electrical-related, and I respected him greatly. Was brighter than most EEs I know.
Last year we corresponded via email about my daughter’s science fair project. I sent him the Excel spreadsheet containing her data on battery voltages vs. time, and he responded with some excellent advice:
We would occasionally find sport in pointing out small errors in each other’s posts. On one occasion he chastised me for not considering capacitance and inductance when powering a DC motor. I modeled the problem as a simple, DC system, while Mike said that not considering reactive components would yield incorrect results. He was right, of course. Felt rather embarrassed afterwards. :o
But I got back at him. On another occasion he made a blanket statement along the lines that “electrical current was due to electrons.” I replied that the current inside a battery was not due to mobile electrons, but ions.
At any rate, Mike will be very much missed. I am so saddened by this. My condolences to his family.
Wow. I just saw this.
Travel well Q.E.D.
May the angels speed him to His rest.
Whoa
Anyone having read his posts would know this quy really knew his stuff and was a tremendous asset to these boards.
This news makes me feel sad.
Fare thee well, Q.E.D.
This is shocking and sad news. I always enjoyed reading his posts. He spoke with such reassuring authority. Hoping his loved ones can find peace in this difficult time.
