A new "name my pet" thread!

That’s right, folks. I need help naming my dog. It seems that I’m the only one who likes the name Killer, and it’s actually really no good.

So here’s the description: She’s a 6 month old red heeler mix, reddish brown coat. About 20 pounds. She’s very very friendly, actually only heard her bark twice so far (at other dogs) but shy at the same time. Half the time she’s sleeping under the couch, the other half she’s pawing all over whoever is available.

I thought that Killer was fairly clever and interesting, as it’s a common dog name but completely inappropriate for such a sweetheart female. According to my friends and my mother, it’s lame.

So dopers, help me out here. What should I name my dog?

Uhhhh, may I suggest Red? If you don’t like that, how about this site? http://www.petrix.com/dognames.

How about Cerberus?

I’m still keen on Birefringence.

You could always go a little Southwestern and name her Rojo…Spanish for red. (That way it’s a LITTLE bit more interesting, anyway. The “J” sounds like an “H,” for those of you in the peanut gallery.)

Just don’t name her anything tedious, like “Lady” or “Lassie” or any of those other pukalicious names for female dogs.

My dog’s name is Kermit. As in, Kermit The Dog. shrug I was tired of trying think up names.

Name my pet thread:

There seems to be several dopers who wish to name their pets “thread”. I prefer names that end in ie, y, or ey. How about threadey?

Nancy.

My Sis had a Setter/Retriever mix named Molly that she had to put down not too long ago. Molly was 16 yrs old and getting very enfeebled. Hard of hearing, rheaumatic, epileptic. It was humane but very, very sad. My Sis in her younger days, before marriage (and 3 children) was a timber manager for Great Southern/Georgia-Pacific and Molly was her companion as they spent many hours out in the woods. Molly was a sweet animal and had a very active life. Red in color. My suggestion - Molly.

Hmm, stock dog breeds are traditionally named simple human names, like Dan or Bob. Pets seem to have the easiest time learning two syllable names, and they’re harder to get mixed up with other words; animals recognize the vowel sounds more readily than the consonants. That being said, I’ll suggest Annie, Lacey, Roxy, Lena, Andie, or something along those lines.

Ooner Jr.?

You called her this yourself, so I suggest:

Sweetheart.

And it’s not so cute you’ll want to puke. It’s just cute!

You can’t go wrong with Pablo. Whether male or female, a “Pablo” is always in good taste.

If you want a sort of in-joke name for a sweet, non-aggressive dog, how about Ripley? You know, the ferocious heroine from “Alien”.

Veb

How about Rusty, Ruby or Rose?

And for goodness sake, make sure you name the dog something you won’t sound like an idiot calling out loud. (Sweetheart, indeed!)

Sophie?

Drumroll please…

Pablo.
