In my experience the support among Asians for republicans seems to come from:
Anti Communist passion (Vietnamese, some Koreans)
Christianity, particularly evangelical and prosperity gospel versions (all groups)
Anti tax, anti regulation, pro discrimination (against Blacks) among small business owners in particular.
Sure, but my point is they think they’re “safe” because they’re the “good” sort of minority rather than those “bad” minorities.
And always seem to be surprised (surprised, I say!) when those types of distinctions don’t matter to a bunch of white supremacists (or white nationalists or race realists or whatever the ‘polite’ term du jour for the 3rd rate Nazis we’ve had crawling about on the continent for a few centuries now)
Yes. People with bigoted opinions tend to project their own beliefs onto others, especially people with broadly similar beliefs. So lots of people who classify people into “races” tend to assume everyone uses the same system of race classification and so, for example, you have all the people brought up in the American race system who think that “Asians” all think of themselves as that and have no idea that Japanese, Chinese, Koreans and so forth can all regard themselves as different “races” (and hate each other over it, naturally).
I think this happens because people like that consider their bigotry “obvious” objective fact and avoid thinking critically about it, because then they’d realize it isn’t. That leaves them blind to the fact that other people can have their own racial/ethnic systems that they take just as seriously. The idea that there are many such systems of classifying people because there’s nothing factual to base it on so it’s all arbitrary is antithetical to the racist mindset.
I recall it being pointed out post election that many minority Republican supporters appeared to be falling prey to that; they had their own ethnic systems that differentiated between the Good Ones (themselves) and the Bad Ones (those perfidious Venezuelans, Cubans, Argentinians, etc). The idea that Trump and the white nationalists would just see all those as undifferentiated “brown people” or “Mexicans” just blindsided them.
Ironically, “Obama Phone” is slang for taxpayer-subsidized cellphones provided to low-income individuals. Not glamorous, but they are cheap, functional, and actually exist (even if it is a bit of a misnomer as the program predates the Obama presidency). Exactly the opposite of the Trump phone, really.
Well, duh. You can’t have any of “those people” have access to an affordable telephone. It has to be a gold telephone with a picture of The Greatest President Ever™ so everyone knows who to be thankful to at $5,000 a pop, what a phone truly made in America would cost.
A CNN poll released on Monday found that 77 percent of Americans surveyed reported that Trump’s policies have driven up the cost of living in their own communities. Another 75 percent found that the war in Iran has had a negative effect on their finances.
I put this here because this is getting a lot of traction in the news. It’s becoming very obvious that he’s extremely out of touch with what Americans care about. That should be apparent to anyone who has ever paid attention to Trump, but it’s just extremely blatant now. There have to be Republicans right now begging Trump to shut the fuck up already.
This is worth a watch. Trump is being humiliated in multiple ways in China.
Xi Jinping didn’t meet him at the airport
Chinese medea isn’t covering it.
Iran and China are making deals on the side.
and it’s pissing Trump off. HA HA. MeidasTouch
What is worse, IMHO is that they had Multiple off ramps. The impeachments, the aftermath of Jan 6, either of the next two elections. They were afraid then, they’re afraid now. I hope in my deepest of hearts that the next few unavoidable years burn MAGA and the Republican brand down to ashes. But I’m wise/cynical enough to know it won’t be so.
But it’ll be a full generation, if ever before I’ll consider a Republican candidate no matter how qualified, because no post facto apologies or claims of ignorance can be credible given the information available. In short, Fuck those people.
As I told some candidate who knocked on my door canvassing for votes, I’m so ticked off at the Republican Party at this point that I wouldn’t vote for a Republican for dog catcher. As far as I’m concerned, anybody who would run as a Republican in this day and age can go fuck themselves.
Well, I mean, there are certain topics and situations in national government where economic concerns should take a backseat. But obviously, Trump isn’t saying this with any kind of thought behind it.
When you’ve started a recession in a midterm year, it is never good politics to say you don’t give a shit about how your decisions are going to impact people financially. Especially when the vast majority of voters already blame those decisions on the tanking economy.
Doesn’t matter. How many times must we learn this? The right may pay more at the pump, but the right sees it blamed on the left. Same for grocery prices, etc. It is always Obama’s fault.
I know that is what the polls say, but I’ve seen him get re-elected. You are a glass half full type, I’m a trump has shit in my glass multiple times and gets re-elected type.
Seriously - Go to foxnews.com. What is the right seeing? They are fellating him every single day. I don’t watch their broadcast news, but I assume it is the same.
The right knows things cost more, but they are not going to vote against Trump/right. Yeah, congress might swing for two years, but the right isn’t coming to some big revelation and changing their mind.
Trump isn’t up for reelection. But many Republicans will be. And what I saw was a Republican Party that got its ass kicked in 2018, especially among people who Trump endorsed. I also saw him lose in 2020. Trump isn’t invincible, he doesn’t always win, and he hasn’t ensured victory for Republicans either.
I’m just talking about the midterms, because that’s the imminent election and it’s going to matter a lot. He has got a lot done with a compliant legislature, and he desperately needs it.
The Democrats don’t have to win over the right. Just the left and the middle. Some of the right will come over in time. It happens. It has happened to folks on this board. It happened to me, even.
He knows MAGA is with him on this and that’s all he cares about. And they are. Their latest firmly held belief is that Iran cannot get a nuclear weapon. This is the most existential threat ever known to man. And if they have to suffer some higher prices to make sure that never happens (and Trump will absolutely stop it), they are happy to make the sacrifice. Until he tells them they have to sacrifice for something else and then they will believe that.
