The usual fee is 1/3 the total award but the law team pays the expenses of the suit. A lawyer here in town says he charges 29% in his ads.

A case like this might be an exception to what the attorney usually charges, for a variety of reasons. However, typically the fee is 1/3 or 40%, with an increase if the case is appealed. I wouldn’t be surprised if the lawyers got 45 to 50% of the gross. (which they certainly earned). Since this is a defamation suit (if I’m recalling correctly) and not personal injury, the proceeds are taxable income for Ms. Carrol.
