Well, last day of school went well. Tore apart and reassembled one transmission and two transaxles. That part was actually much easier than I thought it was going to be, though there’s still a lot to pay attention to. Tomorrow, it’s test time. A 100-question written test, followed by a practical hands-on. I might do okay on the written. Not so sure about the hands-on.
And yes, it’s been snowing up a pretty good one today. This morning up 'til early afternoon was just nasty. Cold, hard stuff falling from the sky in fairly blustery winds. It’s tapered off though, now it’s just fluffy stuff and not quite so much wind, so I don’t hate it quite as much.
I just hope it eases off tomorrow. I have to make a trek out to Sherway Gardens and the Apple Store, so I’m already looking at about an hour and a half to two hours each way. I don’t need even more of this crap to slow it down.
According to the forecast though it doesn’t look like there will be anything significant, even if the temps are likely to keep this stuff on the ground 'til then.
In the mean time I’m bleedin’ tahred and wanna go home. Another hour and I’ll be on my way.
Oh, and before I forget, HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL YOU 'MURICANS!. I didn’t have time for a fancy-schmancy turkey graphic or anything.
Hey all! Since skiffman will be working until late and my guests are stuck on the mainland I have put the feast off until skiffman gets home, so while I have plenty to do, I have no rush to get it done. That’s kinda nice for a change. There are plenty of nibbles to get us through the day, and best of all…no football!!!
I’m glad that you enjoyed the mini video, it cracked me up that the opening shot was of the McDonalds. Back in the day it used to be a Dairy Queen, and for years that was the only fast food on the island. We now have Subway and Pizza Hut, Burger King and KFC were here for a very short time, and now there are rumors that we will soon have a KFC/Taco Bell! Fortunately all that is concentrated in the “downtown” area and doesn’t affect the communing with nature stuff. And pie babe I remember listening to Johnny Horton sing that song when I was a wee child!
FCM I feel your anxiety in regards to the wedding. Skiffman and I eloped the first time, but the second time we had a proper wedding. My mom made my dress, skiffman and I did the decorations, we bought deli and seafood trays from Safeway, (I am friends with my very own burly butcher, who gave me two shrimp platters, and two king crab platters for the same price as the shrimp!) and another friend made the cakes. Yes, cakes, it was a december wedding, and we had 4 carrot cakes decorated with poinsettias. We had it at the church and were very close to the pastor couple, the wife was my matron of honor and I had my two oldest daughters and another two of their close girlfriends who were like my own for bridesmaids, my youngest daughter was the flower girl and my son was the ring bearer. Skiffman asked his skipper/best friend to be his best man, and it was wonderful. Even doing most of everything ourselves it still was expensive, but it has served as a real connecting point when things become stressful between us. Ha! Someday I will tell you about the elopement…what a fiasco that was!
Has anyone heard of Moonstruck Chocolate? My daughter’s mother-in-law just dropped off a container of dark bittersweet chocolates…must be truffles due to the consistency, but she made them into bars. I ate a tiny piece and it’s heavenly, but I gave the son a piece, and he said yuck…more for me!!! I have bookmarked the web site, and will have to look into this chocolatier further, yummm!
Okay, the wind is slashing the rain against the windows, I need to finish up my cuppa tea and get on with the days kitchen slavery. I have a mason jar of home made peach mead that I may break out later. Happy Thanksgiving everyone in the states, and Happy Day to everyone else!
Oh Lordy, I just got a call, and my guests are indeed back on the island! Now I have to go into hyperdrive…so much for a laid back day!
It’s a good thing I love my guests, and I love cooking for other people! Now to get the bird in the oven…
Me at the height of my modeling career and with my best homies as a youth.
LiLi, cheese caramel corn is just a mix of cheese popcorn, and caramel corn. Toss them together in a bag, shake about vigorously and ta-da. It’s even better (if that’s possible) when you get it while the caramel corn is still a little warm. Places around here call it Chicago Mix, but I’m not sure if that’s a local vanity, or if no one anywhere else ever realized the yummy cheesy caramelly goodness in eating the two together. Honestly, it’s addictive.
Ok, to light the grill and start the Thanksgiving burgers!!! **BusKid **being at the boyfriend’s with his family today - we get them both here tomorrow. So Wife and I decided on a simple meal tonight. Handmade jalapeno/cheese/bacon burgers on toasted, thick sliced sourdough.
My god, I’m going to gain 17 pounds this weekend…
I am SuperSchlub! - This is day 4 of doing nothing but watching TV, sleeping, and posting here. Yay! wait, “yay!”? um, let me rethink that one.
L&O combo marathon: CI and SVU on USA today, so I’m happy. I didn’t get out to Boston Market for my feast fixin’s but that’s okay - I can pick them up tomorrow or Saturday and enjoy them on Sunday.
I am going out tomorrow for sure, tho - I gotta get at least one PT session in this week or I will be a hurting puppy. Speaking of puppies, did anyone else watch the AKC show this afternoon? I’m a cat person (yes, we all know that) but some of those puppies were real purty.
Tris and Sampiro–nice pics, both.
Dinner is done, dishes are done (by my Dad no less), and now we’re chillin.
Little kidlets and that side of the family has left [sub]yay[/sub].
Little kidlets were very well behaved–I was impressed. So, it was all nice. I also got a terrific gift from my Dad–he is going to pay my last semester’s tuition for grad school. Truly something to be thankful for!
**Rosie, ** I watched a bit of the show at TVParents’ house! Some very lovely dogs.
And then after dinner got to listen to the classic arguments. I could have written a list and checked them off as they went along. The dinner was yummy, though, and then we came home and took a nap. I just got up and now I’m contemplating a brownie.
Wow! Congratulations, Rigs!!
I am totally stuffed as in if somebody put some food in front of me right now I’d keel over from just the fumes. However, I want me a handmade jalapeno/cheese/bacon burger on toasted, thick sliced sourdough. Dang that sounds good MBG!
Howdy to all the first timers showin’ up in here! Come back and play some more.
Sampiro I’m guessing that’s your Meemaw, Papa Mustang, Kittie and Carrie, your brother and you. I also think the fact that I’m pretty sure I’m right is kinda stalkerish in a way. :o But, hey, I’m one of the thousands upon thousands waiting in drooling anticipation for Casseroles For The Dead to be published.
Cutie Pie Publix is indeed a supermarket. Sounds kinda dirty don’t it?
ETA: Wow rigs nice gift!
Dinner(blackened Cornish hen, red beans and rice, green beas) is eaten. I’m going to walk Nelly, drink a brewski, and hit the hay. A Jalapeño bacon cheeseburger would make a nice desert, though.
**Dotty ** - The choice of photographer was made by the betrothed couple, and I expect there will be enough digital cameras present that they should end up with a nice collection of photos. Since it’s not going to be a big church affair, but rather a small civil ceremony held in the same place as the reception, there won’t be the big to-do with all the formal altar shots or any of that. And like I said, it was their choice.
Oh yeah, I’m home, stuffed, and robe-clad, having just finished a toasted almond - it wasn’t very strong. Alas. Dinner was good, and we came away with some leftovers. The ride home was exciting - super, super windy, with leaves swirling like crazy, temps plummeting. But it’s cozy warm here and life is good.
There was one moment of enlightenment - bear in mind I’m 53. My niece was talking about baby names for her future children, and my mom mentioned that when I was born, my dad wanted to name me Roxanne. Whereupon my baby sis started singing Roxanne by The Police… My maiden name began with “R” so I’m glad they opted for Michelle instead. And here all these years I thought I was named for my grandfather (his name was Michael.)
As we drove home, FCD wondered aloud how my life might have been different if I’d been a Roxanne. That’ll lead you on freaky flights of fancy there. So I guess if I ever decide I need a new username, I’ll become Roxanne.
And that’s all I’ve got now. Hope you’ve all had a wunnerful day! I’m gonna kick back and digest some more. Aaaaah, blisssssssss

Would your maiden name be Roxannadanna by any chance?
I should be really sleepy right now but I’m not. Mayhaps this will be a melatonin night.
Hey swampy! I agree with whoever else said it before… We NEED a picture of old y’all know who! (because we don’t really, but we’d like to)
There’s a conversation in the last Harry Potter book that takes place when Ron saves Harry from drowning, and tells Harry that heroics are a lot less cool in action than in the telling, and Harry replies that he’s been trying to tell Ron that for years. I’ve had people thank me for saving their life yada yada yada, and I smile back and say You’re Welcome, the whole time thinking ‘I didn’t do anything special, you wanker’. This tale is the first time since I started running ambulances that I think I truly saved a life.
The call came at 11:30 PM and natch, I was sleeping. An 82-year-old lady had fallen in her home, and she was in Pixley, just down the road a bit. I told VWife I was taking the call, and checked in with the dispatcher. As I was going out the door, Steve the Barber also called in and said he’d get the truck. A good thing too, because the station is the wrong way from the scene, and I could get to her more quickly.
Beulah was in the kitchen, on the floor surrounded by several relatives who were tending to her. She had a humongous knot on her right hip, and while she could move her right foot she couldn’t stand, and the kinfolk wouldn’t let her move anyway. My impression was either a fractured or a dislocated hip.
When I got her history, there were two factors that added to the story. Beulah was 4 days out of the hospital, having received a blood transfusion to treat an unnamed circulation problem. When she fell, she was in a chair and fainted. Hmmm.
Steve arrived; we tied her legs together so her left was a splint for the right, and we transported. I did a complete workup of her vitals. The oxygen level in her blood was 88% where normal is 95% or more. I put her on oxygen, and the standard rate brought her up to 91%. I tweaked it a little higher, and he it 97%. Beulah was also cold, so I jacked up the heat and made sure she was covered. We had a long ride ahead of us. As we rode, Beulah warmed up a bit and became more awake; a very good thing.
We delivered her to the ER without problems, although the ambulance radio decided to go flaky on us.
I’m sure by now, you’re wondering why I think I saved a life. Beulah was dealing with hypoxia, a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, and it was low enough that without intervention, it could have been fatal. That sweet old lady had a Life Alert button around her neck, and she wouldn’t push it because she didn’t want to be bother; when they found her on the floor, one niece grabbed it and pushed it away.
Had she not fallen, causing her nieces to show up and tend to her, she would have faded away overnight. Once again, I didn’t do anything special, just relied on my training. I’ve lost patients, dealt with many others who needed good first aid, assisted other EMTs who did save a live, but this was the first one where I did it myself as the primary caregiver. It made my turkey today a little tastier, and convinced me at Someone is watching out for that little old lady.
That’s awesome, Bob. Thank you again for what you do.
I am trying to convince Mr. Lissar to pack his clothes for tomorrow. He feels kind of sick, and is wondering if it’s a good enough excuse to stay home tomorrow. Also, I successfully made caramels instead of fudge. I think we have enough chocolate in the presents- choc popcorn, peppermint bark, oreo truffles, brittle, and now caramels.
I think I’m kind of neurotic about cooking.
Hope everyone’s T-Day went well!
I’m wondering if the LOL didn’t have a pulmonary embolism (blood clot to the lungs).
Nice work, VB!
We watched “The Queen” with my parents and they loved it. They’ve gone back to my Dad’s club downtown, but they’ll be back tomorrow to take us all out to dinner! Yay. It has been a VERY nice Thanksgiving for me, one of the best, despite my grumpiness earlier on. Does a body good to have a nice holiday.
Off to bed soon, even though it’s only 10pm, I feel like it’s midnoc.
Good job, Vbob!
I did laundry, vacuumed, and put a new blind in my bedroom window, so I wasn’t a total slug.
druk and torpid! msuit stumble off to bned/
Wow, even when you’re drunk, you use complex words. I had to look that one up.
Unless of course, you misspelled another word. . . stupid has the same ending. . . .and torpedoed has the same beginning. . . . jus’ sayin’ ![]()
But torpid fits in rather nicely there except that it’s spelled correctly.
