Another way to get the URL for a single post is to right-click on the post number. That will open not a new window with the post, but rather a menu with several options, including “Copy link location”. Click on that and the single-post URL will wrap its tiny paws about your cursor and cling there until you deposit it in your post.
Ignorance is being fought left and right in this thread today; thanks, ETF. And as an extra fillip, I’ll mention that in my OS, “copy link location” = “Copy Shortcut”.

Finally, if you do not like the “single post link” feature and do not mind engaging in just a bit more work, you can modify the url that you captured with either of the preceding methods thusly:
Beginning with the retrieved url using postcount
Change showpost.php to showthread.php
then replace postcount=999 with the text #post8276113 where the number 8276113 matches the number in the showthread (previously showpost) field.
So
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/show**post**.php?p=8276113**&postcount=379** (where only the single post is displayed)
becomes
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/show**thread**.php?p=8276113**#post8276113** (where the entire thread is displayed beginning at that selected post)
giving the links:

now changed to

It’s really not as bad as it seems, and it doesn’t bother me at all. A few people have done the lion’s share of posting. It’s not so much a pile-on as a tag-team among mutual admirers. “Oh, Smith you’re so clever!” “Thank you, Jones! I admire you too!” I do appreciate your level-headedness however, and others have also dropped in to say how crazy they’re acting. They want me to blow up because they believe that past performance is a predictor of the future. I just hope they don’t invest their own stocks.

Ironically, wasn’t that prr’s complaint in the first place? And you actually took the step of giving him money to stop posting, which indicates you expected him to continue in a predictable pattern (it’s not like you paid an administrator to make prr’s past posts disappear).

My take. When Liberal offered to pay another to leave the board ,the moderators should have stepped in. They should have said that this is a debate and idea board and we will not permit such childish actions. However ,I get the impression they were amused at what was happening and curious to see how far it would go. Sitting on their hands allowed a poster and the mods to diminish themselves. It resulted in a long time member leaving . It in no way added to the board and everyone involved should be ashamed. Liberal got trapped into backing up his offer like a child acting on a schoolyard dare. It should not have been allowed.

I can’t really blame them for this. The situation is so ridiculous that there isn’t really a precedent (on this board) for it. If nothing else, Liberal is certainly an original. Had either party blinked, I doubt the mods would have urged them to continue. They’re content to let the parties sort it out, which the parties themselves publicly requested. Unless you want to claim Liberal is mentally incompetent, he can spend his money as he chooses and his “diminishing” is solely his responsibility.
Regardless of the outcome to Liberal, I don’t think the SDMB itself has been diminished at all. There are plenty of posters who share PRR’s opinions so the atheism debates won’t stop, though they might be a bit less acrimonious. This bribery incident will simply add to board lore, something the old-timers can use as a punchline:
