Mawnin all and good afternoon to our far East Mumpers
So let me tell you a story about an orchard.
My computer geek and I were talking a couple of months ago about what to do with six+ acres of land he owns that are about an hour NE of Austin. The land is narrow, say 50yds wide and has a gentle slope and has few trees. There is also a barn(in terrible shape) with water and elec, the frame of a greenhouse and a house in front that his elderly parents(hoarders) live in. The land is just outside the city limits of a small town so we are exempt from regulations. I suggested we try to grow some hazelnuts because I like them, he suggested we get a bit more ambitious. We went up there and had what I dubbed the “random camping event” basically to check it out. There we developed the “plan”
Our goal is to create an orchard that is drip irrigated and because we have a long gentle slope we can use cisterns.
This year we shall clear the land of weeds and unwanted trees, currently about half done.
Build a camp house and bath house, he has a wife and kids so it has to be done. The camphouse will be shipping containers but tent camp is well established and usable also the bathhouse is nearly complete in the barn, toilet, shower and sink with hot water.
Install irrigation main line and cistern
Start worm farm, build rabbit hutch, mend fences, buy two goats and layout the land for trees.
All to be done this year working one weekend a month plus a couple of longer trips.
Next year we shall plant
Pecans, hazelnuts, apricots, olives, avocados, figs and a couple of other trees
Build raised bed gardens for maters, squish, watermelons and the like
The goal is to have food for our use and sale, a beautiful place to go, a place to teach children the value of hard work and keep us healthy and strong as we age.
Yes we are insane
Happy Tuesday all
Jim
