Photobucket, that’s what I hate. Really the fact that for some reason, it’s blocked here at work. So all the talk is about some cute lil’ dress and can I see what the fuss is?
Of course I can’t
I’ll be here in my corner pouting.
Not really. Really, I’m off home, to meet a friend and take in the baseball game tonight. We’re going to get there early and snag a picnic table on the right field deck. Everyone look for me, ok?
Actually, the reason why I don’t buy hardcovers is that they take up too much room on the bookshelves.
See, despite moving into a house that’s twice as large as my old apartment and filling it with a total of seven bookcases of various sizes, I somehow managed to max out my shelf space within a year. I should probably give away some of the books, but I just can’t bring myself to do it because there’s a slim chance I might want to read them again (well, except for the giant pile of cheesy romances, which I’ve put in the Garage Sale/Goodwill box).
Yes, I know. I’m a terrible packrat.
Plus I read ridiculously fast, so it gets expensive.
Borrowing other people’s books is good because it resolves all my issues. LiLi, I think I might just take you up on your offer. I promise not to drop this one in the tub.
Nava, I didn’t know you could make sangria with cola. It sounds vaguely gross, but I’m intrigued anyways.
Yes, Grandmother was something else again, Haze. I was usually scared of her, too – until she turned about 90; then she mellowed out and was absolutely adorable till she passed away a few years ago a month shy of 103 – but she was the only person who could tell my father something and make it stick. She believed in young ladies being fashionable, too, which helped.
We just had a nasty, nasty line of storms move through. Nasty to the point where I unplugged everything (except one TV so I could keep an eye on the radar), got dressed (so I wouldn’t get caught braless and in my PJs in case the house got blown away), and got everything ready to go hide in the bathroom with the Idiots if one of the many areas of “cyclonic activity” around here decided to turn into a tornado and blow my house away. Fortunately, as I was hoping it would, the front did this little split and the bad stuff passed north and south of us, and we got about five minutes of hard rain and only two close lightning strikes. I am considering myself seriously lucky, to put it mildly, considering the problems all over the area! There was apparently a funnel cloud just a couple miles north of here, plus a lot of wind damage all over the area; the winds were gusting at 70 mph plus. I hope all the other Dopers in this area are okay! There’s hundreds of thousands of people with power outages, of which fortunately we are not one. Which is very good because it is miserably humid, and without being able to run fans, I would be a very unhappy camper in short order!
Poor Papa Tigs left work early to go to the dentist, and found himself trapped on a city street on his way to the Beltway with rain so hard he couldn’t see anything around him and a line down not 3 feet in front of him. Needless to say, he was prepared to just sit there and wait till the line thing got straightened out (he thought it might be just a phone line but wasn’t willing to take a chance on finding out), but some other idiot in a pickup decided to drive over it, managed to get it caught in his axle ( :smack: ) and managed to pull it out of Papa Tigs’ way so he could turn around and go another way! So he actually made it to the dentist almost on time, which thoroughly surprised us both.
So I’ve replugged everything in in my office. I guess I should go replug in the stuff in the living room, too; the TiVo takes forever to warm up. And then maybe I should try to work again. Clearly, Someone doesn’t want me to this week. Sigh.
Muppet That is why I go to the library. But some books I just can’t wait to get my grubby paws on, so I buy them. I do this especially with paperbacks (because of course unless you manage to find them right away at the library they seem to disappear into a black hole, and not all libraries get the same books) and a select few hard covers (the Kushiel series, EE Knight’s Vampire Earth, some Sherrilyn Kenyon but after Acheron I think that will end and just read from the library or wait for paperback)
I’d spend way too much on books if I could. As it is I still do sometimes… books and yarn are my weakness…
Did I mention we’re selling the boat? I put an ad in the paper the day before yesterday. So far, no calls…sigh. It’s a beautiful boat and well taken care of too. We cleaned it every time we took it to the lake and took care of any required maintenance too. As an added bonus, this boat has never been in salt water.
If the add doesn’t work, we’ll take it down to the boat dealer and sell it on consignment. It’s not really the route we want to take, but if we have to do it, we will.
Hubby still isn’t home. When I talked to him this morning, he wasn’t having a good day. I keep hoping his day has improved, but it doesn’t look like it so far. I hope gets home soon, we have to leave in an hour for the scholarship tea. He’s usually home around this time or earlier.
Hm, I don’t really have anything else to add. Later…
**Haze ** if you don’t find any cute boyshorts at VS, check out Frederick’s of Hollywood if you have one in your area. I’ve gotten some really cute ones there.
I’m working and feel useful tonight! I saved a doctor’s paper (he’s now working on a Master’s apparently) Took about 2 hours, but did it before he had to send it in. He was very appreciative. Made my night.
Shadow, I too hope it doesn’t turn out to be serious!
Taters what made y’all decide to sell the boat if I may be so nosy as to inquire?
Nava I intend to use club soda (soda water) in the sangria. I may be a bear, but I am civilized. Ima go buy all the stuff I need tomorrow and make it Firday so it can sit overnight. I have visions of sittin’ beside the pool sippin’ sangria Saturday afternoon.
Nite Special1 sleep good!
It’s just too freakin’ hot here. I’m a summer baby but dangit this is like August weather outside. No rain in sight either.
All this book talk about things that I haven’t read.
Going to go float the river with The Man tomorrow, and Always Stoned Roommate, and his brother who has been crashing at our place for the last 4 or 5 days. When did sunscreen get so expensive?! I spent almost 9 bucks on a bottle of Bull Frog today!
And don’t ask me HOW I did it, but I somehow got two of the roommates and one of their friends to do almost all the dishes today, while I cleaned both cat pans (even though I don’t own any of the cats, and scraped the cat poo off the floor, where they had gone because their litter pans were full.
We finally gave away one of the kittens today, and the girl told us that it had flatworms, which she said was no big deal, but if one of them had them, they all did. I should probably research that, and figure out what we need to do.
I have my fingers crossed for tomorrow. I’m wondering if the rapid heartbeat is a side effect of one of my meds, except that I had it before I started taking it…
In addition to my doctor, I have an appointment with my therapist in the morning. We haven’t met since she put me in the hospital in March. I think tomorrow morning is going to be stressful.
Good grief! I can hear someone’s bass in the street below. We’re on the *ninth * floor! How do they have any hearing left?
My posting gets later and later - life has gotten busier and busier, I guess. **FCD ** came home from work today, and he and son in law put in the new plumbing. This was after son in law came over to the base where I work to apply for several jobs. I knew when he was there because he called me - he locked his key in the van.
I was officially assigned to get cross-trained, and I met with Harry, my trainer. He’s got until June 23 to turn me into an expert. We’ve got 4 different 5 hour sessions scheduled, plus I have to do some computer based training.
Daughter was in Annapolis, where she found out that she’ll be the sailing instructor at camp this summer. She hasn’t sailed in several years, so it’s gonna be interesting. But apart from the camp director, she’s the only one who knows how to sail. And while she was there, they were all consigned to a basement as the storm came thru. Fortunately, the camp was safe, and she got home just fine.
**Haze ** - you need to get some panties with curtains!! When one of my sisters was little, she had some underpants with lace on the seat - she called them curtains. So, anyway, you need panties with curtains to go with that dress.
Some nasty weather is moving this way again. Is it Firday yet??
We just had nasty storm #2 pass over us. This one didn’t have threats of tornadoes, just a LOT of lightning and thunder, enough that I had to turn the TV up louder than usual just to be able to hear Jeopardy. Rusty spent the entire half hour sitting on the couch with his head buried behind my back. Stupid doggie! But at least he wasn’t crawling under Papa Tigs’ desk and getting tangled up in all the wires; that’s one of his favorite “I’m scared, I’ve got to hide!” places. Even though it’s wide open and visible to the world.
I’m also a sangria fan. The basic one in our family is limeade with red wine. Yum. I’ve sometimes even stooped to making it with frozen limeade concentrate. Still tastes yum. Which reminds me that I bought limes at the Mexican grocery the other day. Looks toward the kitchen, where there is some wine that would be excellent in sangria. My favorite sangria is served at a Mexican restaurant in East Lansing, Michigan. I try to get it every time I’m up for a visit.
We had some nasty storms today, too, but nothing like what MamaTigs had. We had a tornado watch part of the day, but it never really looked tornado-ey (is too a word). Of course, since the roofing guy left, it hasn’t rained so I can’t actually test what he did to my roof. Not that I really want to. I’m thinking I’ll go ahead and replace the roof. It looks pretty worn to me and I know that the owners who last replaced it typically replaced stuff with low-quality materials, so it makes me nervous. Also, just getting the flashing replaced will cost me quite a bit if that’s all I do. I’m thinking I need to bite the bullet and get it over with. We’ll see what tomorrow’s estimate sounds like.
Oh…forgot to mention, MamaT, you can check businesses with BBB online. You just enter their phone number and the corresponding business shows up (assuming they have it on file). I used to be a member of Angie’s List, but found that I didn’t use it enough to really make it pay off. Even when I started with Angie’s List, I would always look businesses up on BBB because it occasionally turns out that a high-rated business has negative history on BBB.
Hi NoLa; hi kai; hi whoever else I missed.
I took a nap for about an hour; that helped a lot. I slept deeply enough that I was disoriented when I woke up (took about 10 minutes to decide the date and time). I should probably do more cleaning and organizing (I’ve moved all the bookshelves that live in my bedroom out to the living room; that was fun  ) , but I’m tired, so maybe I’ll just kick back and watch a movie or something.
Oh, goodie. This new storm is supposed to come with hail as well as rain and lightning. What a delightful evening we’re having.
Thanks for the info about checking businesses by phone number with the BBB, GT. It never would have occurred to me. But there are some types of work where you definitely want to check up on someone before getting work done by them. Fortunately, one bad area, car repairs, we found the best guy in the area quite by accident. Next time we need something done, though, I’ll send Papa Tigs to the neighborhood barbershop; all the old guys there will be able to suggest all kinds of names. Which we can then check with the BBB!
Hell, you’re not getting younger, might as well make the most of it. Also, hot damn. Also, why do they call them “boy shorts” anyway? I only ever see girls wearing them.
For the record, Taz is an idiot. He just came up behind Bernie and bit her, but he just got a mouthful of hair. The look on his face was amazingly amusing! We all laughed ourselves silly.
Stoopit cat.
It’s thundery like crazy, but it’s in the distance. From all the TV warning crawls, looks like the worst of it should pass to the north of us. Hope so… Watch out, MamaTigs!!
