A Tale of Two Turtles MMP

OMG that’s the tiniest turtle ever! Baby sea turtle are cuter though

I had an eastern island painted turtle for 19 years. Once found a box turtle and tried to keep it but it refused to eat so I put it back outside.

Mornin’. Why does Monday always come too soon?

Turtles are a pretty rare sight here in the big city… I didn’t even know they came in mini-sizes like that little box turtle. So cute! Squeeeeeeeeeee!

(we do occasionally get teeny-tiny little toads in the garden, though… they’re one of the reasons the cats aren’t allowed outside, because otherwise I’d be cleaning up puddles of cat-vomit-covered toad guts. Ewwww)

So The Boy and I had a lovely weekend of doing stuff. We finally managed to coordinate our schedules with Crafty Friend to do our quasi-monthly Lost-a-thon, and are very nearly caught up now. I made an edamame and asparagus risotto, which I shall blog tonight in case anyone’s interested in the recipe. Then yesterday, we met up with the Perpetual Student and Sugar Momma for brunch… it was raining so hard it felt like we were going to have to swim there, but I treated it as an excuse to bust out the cute rain boots (plus there’s really nothing that can stand between me and Le Petit Dejeuner’s apple slaw).

I also made lemon-cherry hot cross buns yesterday, which turned out very very yummy. I need to tweak the icing, but other than that, they’re total perfection. I just scarfed one down with my morning coffee.

ETA: {{{MamaTigs and Rusty and family}}} What a lucky pup, to have gotten so much love and cuddling and happiness. It’s never easy to let them go, but it’s the kindest thing you can do.

Good Blurrfle to all.

I remember as tot being petrified we’d run into a snapping turtle in the lake on which my Grandmother lived. As I remember, they liked to lay their eggs in the sandy beach where we swam. Grandpa dug up all the eggs and got rid of them which apparently worked because after a while no more snapping turtles.

Another time the ex (the Klingon) and I were driving somewhere up in MA when we spotted one on the road. Of course, we stopped and tried to figure out what to do. When the monster crushed a branch the size of a 2x4 that we were using as persuasion, we gave up as well.

Finally, I have the tale of Myrtle, the turtle who lived with us for several years. Myrtle started out about the size of a quarter but eventually graduated to a 50 gal. fish tank. Myrtle would take food sticks right out of my fingers. Because Myrtle never stopped growing, she finally went to live at the Science Center and could very possibly still be there.

{{{{mama tigs}}}} I know nothing can make you feel any better about the poor old guy. I hope it is peaceful.

I did not have a very good weekend. A lot of pain on Saturday and weak as a kitten on Sunday. I did not try to do too much and today I upped to the dosage of Synthroid that the doc thinks will work for me.

I made a “French Beef Stew” out of a healthy meal cookbook I have on Saturday. It had all the standards, meat, onions, potatoes, but also had Herbes de Provence and greek olives and capers. It was very very tasty. I’ll try to remember to write down the recipe. Last night was a roast turkey breast, smashed NOTs and steamed peas.

Okay, I need to get a the editing of our Spanish client’s English translation of their promotional presentation. Yay.

Tupug

Gooooooooooood morning all! I’m up and, for the first time in many weeks, drinking Caffeine. Snapple Peach Tea specifically. I never drink coffee, or caffinated sodas, just the occasional cup of tea, or the odd Snapple when the grocery store has 12-packs of glass bottles on sale for $4.50.

Many hugs to Rusty and Co. None of our really great pets have ever had the decency to just up and die on us; they always manage to get themselves into positions where we’re forced to do the dirty work ourselves. It’s hard.

I have no turtle stories to share. :frowning:

No chance of taking you up on that offer, Bobbio – we’ve still got Isaac the yellow lab Idiot and Emily the teensy but bossy tortoiseshell cat. That’s enough pets for now, considering the size of this house! :dubious:

Blurf. Someone passed the tiredness on to me. I’ve been getting progressively less energetic over the last week. I had my thyroid tested a couple months ago, and it was fine so it’s not that. I’ve been taking iron so I don’t think it’s that. I’ve been sleeping really well so it’s not lack of sleep. Ugh. I suppose it’s time to go to the doctor. ::sigh::

I made another batch of the Mexican brownies last night with 2x the cinnamon this time. They’re sooooooo yummy. KT made Alton’s pork chop brine and then grilled the chops. They were good.

Now I have to go do work. At least I’m feeling pretty motivated about work today!

{{Mama Tigs & Rusty}}

My head ain’t awake yet, but I had to come in and squee over the tiny turtle, Spaz it is too damn cute for words!

MamaTigs, PapaTigs and snowbunny, you are in my thoughts and I am sending many, many {{{{{{hugs}}}}}} and empathy tears. It is so painful to let go when they need to go.

I tried valerian root last night in desperation to get a normal night’s sleep. While it successfully gave me the drowsies, (is too a word) I need to take it much earlier in the evening. I am very groggy, but I did sleep for four hours, yay!

Happy Monday, my friends.

Mama Tiger - I’m sorry about Rusty, but glad his end is peaceful.

I move turtles off the road, too. I’ve moved some snappers, picking the up at their widest point (hoping they can’t reach that far). Once I was walking down my creek after a heavy rain. The dogs were barking at something that, on closer inspection, was a snapper over a foot across, rolled on his back. Apparently the gullywasher made the creel run so fast he was flipped and stranded. I flipped him back and called the dogs off.

Saturday night a tornado touched down just a block from my step-father’s house. He was up in the attic working on wiring and didn’t even realize he was in danger! I’m about 15 miles away and was working on my fence, but when there was one big clap of thunder, my malamute came uotside to get me. He’s very protective.

Turtle Soup!!
MamaT, Rusty’s end is peaceful and loved, we should all be so lucky.

Hay guys! Remember me?
I’m back! The baby, Little Anya, is now a whopping 21 weeks old! I have much fun playing with her cankles and smooshing her. I don’t have a current pic of her, cause I’m feeling to lazy to upload at the moment, but http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o12/robertamac78/family/039.jpg here is a pic of her.

I now have an air card, so I’ll be on more often. Can’t wait to catch up with everyone.

And turtles! We found a tiny baby last year, it was a box. Jimmy played with the thing for a long time, and we left it by the woods to go do turtle things.

And if snapper’s ever learn how to jump I won’t be fit for this world. Oh my.

At work. Blurf. I told my boss what’s happening; she has a lab so she understands and says if I need it she’ll send me home, but I need the hours so I’m going to skip lunch and leave early instead if I can. My boss is awesome. As is her lab.

Recipe. Thank you.
Sadly, I have no turtle stories, but have enjoyed everyone else’s.

We had a very laid-back weekend, mostly spent watching Attacks Husband play with the kid, and eating random things. It was nice. We went out and bought a futon, so our livingroom will again be massively crowded, but we’ll also be sleeping on a real-ish bed again. I’m still sick (I think this is my second or third cold in a week and a half, unless it’s just mutating a lot) and Nat’s just gone to sleep, so off I go to nap.

Oh man, I almost forgot! Today is the tenth anniversary of the day Fabio got a goose in the face while riding a roller coaster!

'Scuse me I need to get a goose and “remind” Fabio of the importance of this day.

I am on the world’s most BORING conference call ever. I’m absolutely ravenous, but it’s be at least another 20 minutes before we can wrap up and I can go grab some food. Aaargh. What kind of sadist books a meeting over lunchtime, let alone one this boring?

Hiya TagFree! waves Nice to have you back. Anya is adorable! I can see where you’re having trouble resistin… those little chubby cheeks are just begging for a smooshing.

LiLi, shall be blogged tonight (hopefully), once I sort out the icing problems. I’ll give you a heads up when I post it.

PS - I’m guessing your tomatoes have probably started sprouting, or will be any day now. Just so you know, I put two seeds per pod as insurance against non-starters… I’d suggest yanking the runtier sprouts at the end of this week (once you’ve got noticeable sprouting in all the pods).

Apparently VunderBob’s wife and I are related, because I cut off the tip of my middle finger on my right hand Saturday night on something. I reached into the utensil drawer to get the meat fork, and whammo! But when Herr came to investigate, he couldn’t find anything that would have cut me. And I also have bleeding issues due to medication, so I decorated the kitchen with splatters before I got it under control. We could have filmed Texas Chainsaw Massacre in there, and I ruined a comfy (was white) shirt.
The turtle is sooo cute, I’m not sure I would have been able to release it for a while. I would have had to take it to school and spoil it rotten first.
We have lots of snappers around here, and I would not try to tackle them. My uncle used to lose ducklings in the spring because the snappers would come up underneath them and bite their feet off, and I guess eat the bird later after it sank to the bottom. We did NOT go swimming in his pond.

Yes. I do have sprouts. I’ll yank out the smaller ones when I’ve got more than two days of growth on them.

Turtles! Nice story. I have two turtles myself, and one of them is a snapper. The other is a red-eared slider and surprisingly he is by FAR the more ornery of the two.

Hey, cool. That cookbook link from last week made Weird Earl’s…

I’m in hot water, or more accurately, I *want *to be in hot water. One of our neighbors wanted to get rid of a hot tub so they could reclaim their patio. They said that they thought the pump was bad. How expensive can a pump be? Famous last words… We agree to take the thing off their hands and off their patio.

So, we call in our strong friends, and the tub is rolled across the street and into our back yard. Yesterday, we put in some water and plug it in. The pumps work, amazingly enough. We just need a new filter and retainer, and to run a proper electrical circuit for it. Good thing it all works - the jet pump is a $560 part and the circulator is a $160 part. Eeep! The filter is a consumable, and the retainer is a whole $18.

Now, I just need to learn how to take care of the thing. I’ve never had a hot tub or pool before and have no idea how the chemistry all works. I do know that I need all of whatever’s needed, unless all I need is some bay leaves and cinnamon. I’ve got lots of those. Pretty sure that I don’t want either in the hot tub, unless we’re having Vegetables Marin for dinner. Hopefully the local pool shop has starter kits for complete idiots like me.

BAAAAABY!

Too cute!!!
