A Tale of Two Turtles MMP

{{MamaTigs}}

I just realized that I haven’t seen **WhyNot **around the Dope in a long time. Did she leave in the last round of… well, of people leaving? She was someone who’s posts I look for, and I realized I hadn’t seen her.

Oh **Mama Tigs, **I teared up reading about Rusty’s last moments. And, who knows, maybe Isaac DID see Rusty for moment. Maybe Rusty came to say good-bye to his good buddy.

Welcome, RNATB. We’re a nice bunch. Just jump right in, the water is fine.

Bobbio, I am sorry about your old guy.

I stayed home sick yesterday with a raging headache and the accompanying nausea. It sucked.

Except for feeling pretty wrung out and hollow, I feel better today and have managed to drag my hiney into work. Not that I want to be here; I’m really, really, really sick of coming in to work. I’m just plain burned out and am having way too many “eff it” days. This isn’t good. I’m working hard on turning my attitude around, but it’s difficult.

Speaking of work; I should get back to it. My lunch is about over.

She posted to **nyctea scandica hardtospellica’s **Pit Thread a few hours ago.

Oh, good! Thank you.

psychotic murderous rage

I fucking hate Dynamics. Or rather, this teacher. All his exam problems are rediculously complicated backasswards bullshit problems where unless you know the EXACT procedure for solving it at the instant you read the question, you will either do it wrong or not finish or both. And of course the problems are all carefully chosen so that they bear almost no resemblance to anything we’ve done previously in class or for homework. I seriously do not know how to study for his exams other than to memorize the setup procedure for every type of problem in existance, which is obviously impossible.

Case in point: One of our problems was an impact problem. We’ve done impact problems before, where two objects going in different directions collide and bounce away, and we solve for the initial or final velocities or whatever. But in this problem, instead of two colliding billiard balls or whatever, we had a sphere colliding with a ramp-on-wheels, where the sphere was travelling horizontally before impact and vertically upwards afterwards. We had to find the angle of the slope of the ramp.

We’ve never done a problem anything like that before. The process for solving it was totally different from the process for solving any of the impact problems we’ve done before. There are no examples of this type of problem in the book. We haven’t even had to find the angle of impact between a projectile and a STATIONARY object, much less one that moves when hit. God t’s so frustrating I want to scream. I feel cheated. How am I supposed to solve a problem where the procedure is different from anything we’ve done before and which is not explained in the book? And how am I supposed to study for exams where I don’t know what kinds of problems will be on the test?

And to top it all off the teacher sent the class an email essentially telling us we all suck and are morons and should be ashamed of ourselves and do better. Because it’s apparently more plausible that a whole room full of engineering majors are lazy morons than it is that he, who has NEVER TAUGHT DYNAMICS BEFORE, simply can’t teach, or writes shitty exams.

I seriously want to go beat the unholy bejeezus out of anything that breathes right now.

The highest grade, before scaling, was a 78. After scaling, 97.8
Average was, before scaling, a 52.6. After scaling, 65.75
My grade was, before scaling, a 61. After scaling, a 76.25

I am THIS CLOSE to just calling him out in the middle of class and pointing out exactly what an ignorant SOB he’s being right now. I haven’t been this pissed off in a long time.

45 degrees? (Or a 1:1 gradient)

Blargh.

Where the hell did my day go? I’d actually planned on leaving early… but obviously, that didn’t happen. I’m leaving now though.

Lots of work-related changes today. There’s been another flurry of Somewhat Important People leaving the project for a variety of reasons, and they’ve also made an announcement about the appointment of The Very Very Important Person in Charge of Everything. I’m still here, thankfully, holding steady at the rank of Not Particularly Important But Somewhat Useful.

BWT, welcome to the insanity, DimBulb. Hope you stick around… we like new [del]meat[/del] Mumpers.

Just a quick stop.

{{MamaTigs}} - your post brought me to tears. I’m glad Rusty’s last hours were so happy. Last week, I was listening to a vet being interviewed about the decision to let pets go, and she said many people are surprised how quickly euthanasia goes - a matter of seconds. It’s good to know it’s so quick.

{{Bobbio}} - pretty sucky way to start the day.

On Friday, I get to go before a murder board. Not sure why it’s called that, but it means I present my project to all of the people who will be signing off on it. Instead of routing it to them one at a time, we all go over it at once, so in theory, I only do one revision, then they all bless it. I know most of the folks who are on my board and I’m not concerned, except this is my first project in my new area, so I know it stinks. Learning experience… learning experience.

Class tonight - I hope to get my 3 herb garden pots done.

Oh, we can use some good thoughts here. Daughter (and all the other first year teachers) got letters today informing them that there are budget issues in the school district and they may not have a job next year. She found out that the 12-month employees are being cut back to 11 months and losing some benefits. She is trying to get a job in our county, but I expect they may be facing the same issues. So crossed fingers would be appreciated.

And now, off to make supper. See ya tomorrow…

No. 60-something, I think 63 degrees or so. The answer key for the exam has not been posted or I’d link it, but the work involved was horrifying and I have no idea how we were supposed to solve it.

Meh… I’m still doing better in this class than in Thermo, and like this class more to boot, which is the really scary thing.

One more class today, yay. Then I can eat.

And to top it all off, the earliest appointment I could get to have my broken tooth pulled is a week from tomorrow. Blurf^∞

Many hugs for MamaTigs & Co., and crossed fingers for FCDaughter.

ETA: Anyone know what happened to Silver Tyger Girl? I haven’t seen her in two or three MMP’s.

{{{{Bobbio, Tigs, snowbunny, and anyone else who needs it}}}}}

FCM: Murder board? I’m calling Columbo. You shall not go unavenged!

Lookit cootie ittle baby withums ittle cheeeeeeeeeeeeeks! ahem Um…cute kid, TagFree.

I got a new skirt today for the first time in…um…thinking dang, seven years? I’m wearing it now. I am now officially one size smaller in skirts than I am in pants. preens I think I’ll be a bit of a clotheshorse this week–my wardrobe needs a serious upgrade and now that my money is here I can afford to spend a little on it.

I was gonna be nice and suggest 20Watt

Competition went well - We moved up from a C- (which is where we were - I had it wrong last week) to a very high C but not quite a C+ - we improved in all categories, scored a total of 52 points higher than last year (which was only 2nd most improved - some schnook chorus had to go and improve by 68 points) but most importantly - the audience got all the jokes!

I am still tired even though I spelt most of yesterday. I haven’t even started on the photos yet. As soon as I do, you’ll know
eta: forget to say ::squeeee:: re the teeny turtle and Anya

You’re certainly bringing up lots of unpleasant college memories for me, moonie. Except that for me, I had a really really good professor for Dynamics. It was one of the few classes. I have plenty of memories of professors exactly like what you’re describing. But the Dynamics professor had been a teacher previously and actually knew how to… wait… get this… TEACH! It was shocking. And he had a sense of humor. And engaged the students in class. Who’d have thought? Because of all that, it was my favorite core engineering class. (Not that I could explain anything to you know… it’s been more than a few years and I haven’t had a need for it since. But at least the class was fun and the exams were doable. Like those of us who paid attention actually got A’s on the exams uncurved! As opposed to almost all the other core engineering classes where, like you’re describing, the average was usually in the 50s and those of us who tried but weren’t geniuses got 60s.) Blurgh… as I said, you’re bringing up unpleasant memories. For the most part, when I think of college now, I think of the socializing, the fun stuff. I guess if it’s any consolation, in 8-10 years most of what you’re going through now will be a very faded memory and you’ll remember more of the good stuff. So make sure you make time for the good stuff (It does sound like you do, but just a reminder.) 'cause that’s the stuff you’ll remember.

Howdy Y’all! Three down and two to go! Plus it’s stormin’ again. More on that in a bit.

Well, if you insist… {{{BBBobbio}}} :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously, sorry about the old guy dyin’ on ya.

Welcome RNATB! I haven’t bit ya in other threads, so odds are I won’t here either.

Ok, now for the weather. Remember me sayin’ we had tons of rain on Sattidy? Well, it’s back. Possibly through Thursday now. As much as thirteen and maybe up to fifteen inches of rain. It’s really bad too. How bad you ask? Well, I was watchin’ The Weather Channel and according to the weather person, who was showing a map of where all the rain and storms are in the area, …

Louisiana has moved and is now on the border with Flardy, Alabammy and Jawja! Now, that folks, is what ya call some stormin’!

We get postal news at work sometimes and my manager forwarded me an email today about how bad the flooding is out in the Red River valley. Some people won’t get their mail until the water recedes and in some areas “the DOT will shuttle the PM (Postmaster) via boat or Humvee in and out” to make deliveries. That’s dedication: having to be shuttled around by boat to deliver the mail!

Cold here. Rainy. Bleh day. I am (literally) waiting for Frasier to start (at 9pm)–that is the highlight of this day for me.

I have nothing to say.

Heh… That’s pretty much what I’m banking on at this point. To be fair, my average for our first two exams is a ~75 after curve and I have A’s or high B’s on all the HW, so it’s not like I’m doing terrible… I’m just frustrated. I can do this crap, just not when he makes the problems we’re expected to solve so complicated. Hell, the TA’s have taken both of his exams in order to prepare for discussion sections…

…and none of them finished either exam.

So yeah, that’s that. Whatever. I do know how to solve problems using impulse, momentum, conservation of energ, kinematics, etc, even if I can’t do his exam problems, and the understanding of the concepts is the important part.

Thermo, though, is probably a lost cause. sigh School makes me feel dumb, which wouldn’t be so bad if my intellect weren’t my sole redeeming feature!

Oh, and in other [sarcasm]AWESOME[/sarcasm] news, I have a Physics exam next Monday,a Calc III exam next Tuesday, and an appointment with the dentist to have a broken molar pulled next Wednesday. Forget Firday, it needs to be Summer Vacation right now!

Hmmm, and I still need to schedule an Advising appointment to pick my fall classes… And deal with Housing forms so I can keep my cool roommates next year too. So much to do, so much to do, busy busy busy!

More hugs for the Tigses and Bobbio.

Welcome, DimBulb. (We are mad nicknamers, in case you haven’t figured it out yet. )

::waves at rigs and MBG and other Chicagoland Mumpers:: I might get to go to Chicago for work in the next couple weeks. I’m trying to time things so that I can work on Friday and then stay for the weekend. Details as things develop.

I think STG has been hanging out more at domebo, Moonie.

Work was…work. Tiring. But my friends who were on vacation last week are back, so I won’t have to pretend to be them as well as being myself.

My pretty blue scarf is about half-done now. And I’m back to being lost in German TV. Watching something in another language gives a whole 'nother meaning to escape…

Guess I’ll knit some more…

GT

Back from class, pooped, and about to hit the rack. I just had to pop in to tuck you all in… and go thru your pants pockets as you doze off.

Sweet dreams, my little Mumpers!

MWAH!!

THAT hug must have been warranted… :p:p

I had to work all day. Dinner tonight is Kroger discount deli fried chicken.

gt, she’s there, along with smartie and whynot.

{{{{Tigs Clan}}}}}

Welcome Dimbulb! We’re not strange. Just remember, Lenny the squidgoat can smell fear.

Congrats, rosie!!!

Moonie, bad teachers suck.

Good luck to fairyChatDaughter.
