A Thread That’s Just Nuts(and eating them too)

I never met a nut I didn’t like. Macadamias and cashews are my favorite out-of-the-can nuts. But, a good pecan pie is to die for. And, I could eat a large jar of peanut butter with a spoon at one sitting. I don’t…but I could. Call me nuts.

And the call goes out: “Me nuts! Me nuts!!”

I do miss good old fashioned chestnuts too. The ones available today don’t taste the same.

I always looked forward to buying fresh nuts in the shell. I’d buy 2 to 3lb assortment from Kroger every November.

I had my gall bladder removed June, 2023.

My gut doesn’t process fats the same way. Thankfully raw almonds aren’t a problem. I had to give away a large bag of unshelled pistachios. They started making me queasy a few months before my surgery. I haven’t risked eating pistachios post surgery.

I still need to cautiously try a few pecans and walnuts. Hopefully I can tolerate them.

Walnuts and cashews seemed to have the highest fat content.

When I come across a pistachio that isn’t opened, I’ve been using a small C-clamp.

Most nuts aren’t technically nuts. Peanuts are legumes, almonds, walnuts, and pecans are drupe pits, cashews are just plain weird… I think the only nut commonly eaten by humans that’s actually a nut is the hazelnut.

That is also true for other nuts.

Here is a “magic trick” you can perform. Cut a cylinder of apple and stick a piece of slivered almond into the top. It resembles a small candle.

Show it to the audience. Light the wick. Blow it out. Then shove the whole “candle” into your mouth, rapidly chew it up, and swallow it. Very amusing, but it won’t fool anyone in person. They can see and smell how you made it.

It does work on Zoom or video though.

I love to snack on mixed nuts. Sometimes I have a handful every other day or so; sometimes I can go a month without them. However, I make my own blend because I don’t eat peanuts. (I’m not allergic, but they give me a mild rash.)

I get those 1 oz packets at Walgreens: 2 cashews, 1 almonds, 1 pistachio, & 1 glazed walnuts or pecans. Salted!

I add macadamias if I can find a small portion, which is rare. Sometimes I buy a can of mixed nuts with macadamia but no peanuts then enhance it with the little packets as needed.

You know that those 1 oz packages have a ridiculous markup, right?

I like most all nuts, but in moderation, and usually as part of a dish of some sort or in cookies. Cashews become cloying very quickly for me. Walnuts for oatmeal cookies, sliced almonds toasted and added to saffron rice, peanuts in Chex mix, although I can eat most of a can of goobers at a sitting. Pecan pie is a longtime fave. My spouse loves cashews and hazelnuts.
