Pssst … it’s spelled “opprobrium”, with an o. At first I thought the thread title was using a schmancy Latin form of “approval” - but then it appeared obvious that this was mainly Scylla’s usual pouting about how not everyone in the world recognizes his brilliance and insight, and how some even have the temerity to explain so in factual detail.
Nice of you to admit the possibility of being wrong, though. Try to remember that thought before speaking/writing in the future and life will become much easier.
Ace I have no explanation or defense for this time, though.
Esteemed Lynn this unworthy one approaches. If a man has no voice, how can he make amends? Scylla has done himself, and us, considerable honor by acknowledging his own failings and making a conciliatory gesture. As one who is equally hag-ridden by ego, I can attest that it comes at considerable cost, and not to be taken lightly. As it stands, a worthy process will stand half-completed. May I try your patience long enough to suggest that a reconsideration, as well as a stern admonition, might be called for? Please note: no defense of Ace’s behavior is being made, as Milo (the much celebrated paragon of polite discourse) is quick to point out, my own virtue is by no means unsullied. We Texans, it would seem, are oftimes quick to anger and to stern judgement.
But if he should wish now to heal the breach, how might he do so? Is it permissible for him to e-mail to one of us, that such might be posted on his behalf, or is this an offense to the Protocols? (No, really…is that ok? Lord knows, pissing off an administrator is more than my feeble courage can muster).
I have it on very good authority that prodigals returning can be celebrated above the already virtuous, and here lies an opportunity. If that opportunity is passed by, we are none the worse, if accepted, so much the better. If, upon consideration, you determine to let your decision stand, I will, of course, say nothing further about it.
Can I point out for posterity’s sake that we have two posters, one registered 06-27-2001 named Ace0Spades, currently in the “timeout” corner, and another one registered 04-22-2000 named aceospades, currently over in GQ worrying about his shoes?
As I noted in my post, he’s in time out…he can write to me after two weeks, and I’ll consider restoring his privileges.
I’d also like to point out that I accept gifts (chocolate, sapphires, unmarked bills in small denominations, etc.), though the bribes-er, GIFTS, of course, will have no effect upon my rulings.
Hey, I don’t like anybody that much! Besides, I was raised by Texas women. Love 'em, no doubt, chase 'em around, absolutely. Pay 'em in advance, not on your life.
Ummm…was this supposed to be a “for real” tussle or were Scylla and Ace just satirizing each other to death in a disjointedly recursive, sissy boy slap fight?
I rise in protest! If Scylla wishes to be a sissy boy, he has every right to do so! One would add the cautionary note that, by all accounts, he is a heavily armed sissy boy.
I can’t find the thread that discussed the issue. But I did read it at the time, and my impression was that the concern was about creating the impression that the quoted poster had actually said the quoted words. In this case, Ace, in addition to explaining what he was doing at the outset, also very clearly labelled the post “Originally posted by Scylla, fixed by Ace”. So it was clear that he was not putting it forth as Scylla’s words at all. I would have thought this was OK, or at the very least some sort of borderline case.
Of course, it apparently turns out that this is not OK, and it is perhaps best to err on the side of caution when it comes to rules. Understood. Still, I would suggest that this most likely represents an honest misunderstanding of the rules, rather than a flagrant flouting. As such, mercy is called for.
Yeesh- hundreds of great jokes are made on this topic, and this is your worthy contribution? At least your consistent.
Question for those with a clue- someone who hates republicans is a “bigot”? Does that hold for someone who hates democrats? Libertarians? Is “bigot” the right word for this use?
Thanks! While it seems that definition would cover a more then a few posters around here at times , I wonder if it was appropriate in this context. Of course this is not defending Ace, or attacking the OP- just to be clear.
Guess your probably right- the use in reference to a political party just through me for a bit, especially with the comments that followed the usage. However, the definitions above do mention politics several times.
