Aceplace57, what the fuck is wrong with you?

What I found strangest about that thread was it’s completely bizarre leap in logic. The traditional, nuclear family has been destroyed, so all the restaurants assume everyone is home eating some huge Thanksgiving feast instead of sampling their wares. Shouldn’t that be the other way around? If no one gets together as a group anymore for the holidays, wouldn’t more and more eateries be open to accommodate all that ready-to-spend cash to feed them? If that was true, why on earth would everyone supposedly be closed then?

Well, that’s the rhetorical trope used by just about all the local newspaper expository (sentimental) columnists. It’s a mindless formula they trot out over and over again, because it’s supposed to be “profound” in some kind of homey way. Since it is (or perhaps was) so wide-spread, I can see how some people might come to see this as a valid way to view the world.

Does it make sense that your default is to continue protecting the privilege of those who are used to it for fear they’ll lash out in petulance and w/ their greater power as a majority? Yes and no.

Clearly, to me, no it is not okay. But here we are as a country and a world, with Brexit and Trump and such. I am trying to understand how to approach the aces of the world without condescension but without compromising my progressive values.

Ace only sees through his filter of privilege. Condescension is what he’ll feel no matter how carefully the message of, 'You are wrong and here’s why - ’ is crafted, b/c privilege means he rarely gets corrected. See also tone policing.
If I screamed at you that your house was on fire, would you be entitled to anger over my screaming at you? Of course not. But when a person states a bigoted opinion that has the capacity to endanger others, or at the very least wrongly inform those who are unaware then their wrongness deserves to be treated w/ the respect it deserves, which is none.

Couching corrections in soft, soothing tones reinforces the person’s belief that they’re not really wrong. We understand best by experience and I don’t know about you but life hasn’t prepared me for pain first by saying, ‘I don’t want to make you feel bad by putting you through the funeral of a friend killed in action/two year losing battle of a young person and their family against cancer [for personal example] but it’s simply unavoidable and on the other side of it you’re still special and wonderful.’

It hurts to be disappointed and that is simply life. The death of privilege is slow and painful and more of us are going to feel its effects than not until it’s merely a blip.

I never played doctor with my older brother. Maybe that’s normal behavior in Arkansas??? I’ve read the entire thread, and my conclusion is that Ace is a boob.

He likes boobs, that’s for sure. He sees no problem about commenting on them.

Mein Gott in Himmel, what thread is this? Searching by his name didn’t help.

I believe CatandMouse is referring to the Josh Duggar thread. Acey’s contributions begin on page 3.

I’m referring to the OP in post #1, where this Ace fellow stated “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours was a common childhood game.” He was talking about Josh Duggar.

Dang, that is messed up. I remember reading that thread when it was first posted as the story broke nationally and the Duggars started to go quiet.
Dismissing child molestation and its victims - that’s heinous.

First of all, you’re right. Second of all, we’re still here, so something wasn’t working about the Progressive dismissal of the 1950’s mindset. Now what?

It sucks and I am heartsick, but here we fuckin’ are.

Or else he’s just an asshole. It has nothing to do with having a “1950’s view” or whatever. He’s said some truely vile things. It’s not “progressive dismissal”, or “PC-ness”. He’s an asshole and he’s disgusting.

Let’s stop with the euphemisms about “PC” and “priveledge” and just call a spade a spade.

He actually threw me for a loop with his latest thread about Thanksgiving, because in traditional 1950s views everyone has a big Thanksgiving feasts with their boob-touching families and restaurants being open on the holiday is both unnatural and a sign of the declining American Family.

So I don’t think he has a 1950s view. I think he just thinks everything is some big conspiracy.

Fine, a spade’s a spade. But the same type of spade just won the presidential election on the back of support from a similar set of spades. I couldn’t disagree with their POV more, but acting self-righteously indignant at their POV hasn’t gotten me much and feels like the definition of Insanity (I.e., “trying the same thing, hoping for a different result”).

This most recent Presidential election was won with a poor turnout. I’m not worried about offending intolerant, ignorant assholes. I’m more worried about how so many don’t vote, allowing so few to win.

No. That’s the problem.

I thought the most recent data showed turnout was about the same as 2012:

I think he believes is that there is pent-up demand for traditional Thanksgiving fare that the restaurant industry is willfully ignoring, thus forcing nearly half of America to eat sub-par diner food. Of course that doesn’t make any fucking sense, but whatever, it’s Acey. I don’t think he really thought that through.

With him, everything somehow relates to his grand theme of an America in decline after the halcyon years of the 60s and 70s—a golden age when white guys ran the world, you could comment openly on women’s breasts, and Luby’s Cafeteria was open on Thanksgiving.

A few updates:

Acey lectures us on music theory: there are these things called “chords.”

Acey has a theory on the origin of stairs. Early hominids didn’t climb for fun like we do.

Acey gets a weather app for his phone, and makes the mind-blowing discovery that weather moves in patterns. Just because it’s raining on him, doesn’t mean it’s raining everywhere in Little Rock. (Stop laughing, you guys. Of course he’s seen those radar and satellite images on TV weather reports; everyone knows those are just simulations.)
