Actors/resses that makes you NOT want to see a movie

Juliet Lewis. Ugh.

I won’t dispute anyone saying they don’t like Stewart’s acting. (Tastes differ, especially across the Atlantic, and eighty years.)

I was responding to Oliver’s comment that Stewart was a bad actor. Those are not the same thing.

ETA: I don’t know how I messed up that quote, but I meant to respond to post 199, where @madmonk28 linked to Oliver’s comment.

Hehe, I won’t avoid a movie with Juliette Lewis, but I was pretty befuddled by how popular she was with casting directors in the 90s.

Not sure what side of the Atlantic you’re on, but Oliver and I are in the US and we both think he’s terrible. Can’t do anything about the eighty years, but I thought he was terrible 40 years ago, if that helps. Always the same character and that affected stammer…

Because she was geeky cute, and for certain roles she was a natural. Outside of that narrow window she was pretty meh, and as a result now mostly does TV work (in roles which are still quirky natch).

Me, I was utterly charmed by his singing and dancing with Shirley Temple in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.

Felicity Jones. I’ve seen her in just two things (Yes, Rogue One) and she was awful. Stunk up the screen awful. Terrible actress.

Jennifer Coolidge. Neither funny nor sexy. Just annoying.

Lucy Liu.

The range that exists between a rock and a rock submerged in water. Thoroughly unpleasant, and without any redeeming qualities at all.

I did enjoy the TV show Elementary, but it was most tiresome to endure that actress’s antics. It did help that her character was written to be the butt of all jokes, and had no moments of glory: the chains she wore in life, such were those her character wore on that program.

Juliette Lewis is not famous for anything, if for not over-acting.

I find Jennifer Coolidge sexy… (or did in American Pie series) I’d do her, but she probably wouldnt do me. (Loosely based on a song "I like Zappa, but he probably doesnt like me  )

I am very much of the opinion that Carrey is a really good actor who has been stuck in some dumb roles. His talent shines when given a quality script. I also think highly of The Truman Show* and The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and my personal favorite is Man on the Moon. And no wonder, for it was directed by the great Miloš Forman.

Honestly, there are few actors that I avoid as such. I tend rather to avoid works by certain directors (think Quentin Tarantino and Greta Gerwig). The first actor that comes to mind is Mel Gibson; I don’t find him versatile enough. Some of his period films felt like ahistorica nonsense and to me he comes off as rather too much of a tough guy - and I don’t like what I know of him as a real person. However, I did watch his dark comedy Fatman, where he plays Cris Cringle - read a crotchety, tough-guy take on Santa Claus, and I found that the role suited him perfectly.

Daniel Craig is another name that comes to mind - he has the air of a Russian spy to me. I would never in my life have picked him to play James Bond.

For some of them, it circles back to the “can you support an artist if you disagree with their politics?” debate, and the ones that land on the far side of the “Yes, if their politics or religious beliefs make them a hateful t***, yes.” line. So I won’t pay for a movie ticket to anything featuring or made by James Woods, Mel Gibson, Mark Wahlburg, Gina Carano or Zachary Levi (I’d say the same about Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain, but I can’t think of the last time anything they did hit the big screen). I really can’t be arsed to check out anything starring Dwayne Johnson any more, since he doesn’t seem to care what projects he signs onto anymore either.

As far as avoiding something because someone onscreen has repeatedly given awful or offputting performances, I’ve got another vote for Lucy Liu, and I’ll add Jessica De Gouw, and Adam Sandler if it’s a “comedy.”

Interesting point. Not a movie, but I realized my hatred for Scientology is more robust than I thought. I was listening to a podcast specifically because they were interviewing Giovanni Ribissi. Then as I was reading his Wiki I discovered he is a devout Scientologist. Turned the podcast off (eh, he’s kind of a boring interview anyway).

Oh, and Jesse Eisenberg. Cannot stand him in movies or in interviews. He seems like a right prick to me.

I have to confess that I find it a bit difficult to watch Tilda Swinton in anything. She seems to be a very good actress, and I have watched her in quite a few movies where she’s done very well, but she definitely subtracts points when I’m considering what I want to see. I have no idea why.

Ironically, I made my post about Eisenberg before I knew he was the guest this week on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Opinion not changed (and I’ve only seen clips from the show).

I got the same vibe for Toni Collette.

Strange. She’s one of my favorite actresses.

Could it be their unconventional looks? I adore them both and even I catch myself fixating on their appearance at times.

My wife was watching a Christmas movie the other day. Diane Keaton played the Matriarch of the family. She seems to play the same boring, flat character in everything she does.
