Actors/resses that makes you NOT want to see a movie

I’m not a big Tom Cruise fan, but I thought he was very good in Rain Man. I love that movie!

He also made a good Stauffenberg in Valkyrie.

Vince Vaughn. Hate him. Irrational dislike, I admit, but it burns.

Also Gerard Butler and Sam Worthington are both terrible actors, so I avoid them as much as possible. Which is not difficult.

Also also Jared Leto, but I think everybody hates him, so no surprise there.

Steven Seagal–for being a horrendous actor and an even more horrendous human being

I’m joining in on the Jim Carrey hatred. Mostly. I’ve actually enjoyed him playing a more serious role but I hate his comedies.Nothing but mugging. I thought that, by its nature, mugging couldn’t really be called overdone but he proved me wrong.

You didn’t like Dumb and Dumber? That was the role he was born to play!

Will Smith, Mel Gibson, and Tom Cruise, for a variety of reasons.

Eve Gordon, perhaps? She was on The Powers that Be in 1992-93.

If not her, then maybe Valerie Mahaffey; also on that show, and a bit more squeakily voiced.

Yep, he’s the “Do not watch this movie” sign.

He may have been born to play it but it doesn’t make it funny or even not annoying. I can’t think of any of his theoretically comedic movies that I found even remotely funny.

What you’ve quoted is from me, not Velocity. Anyway, that’s not the right show. The one I’m thinking of had the female star as the male character’s mistress, not daughter, and it was late 70s/early 80s.

Tobey Maguire. I think he’s a shit actor - always plays himself - and there’s something about his weird, wimpy face that irritates me.

I think Maguire got lucky playing in the Spider-Man movies because they made him look like a big movie star but he never really developed much beyond them

Weirdly, I find that these guys can actually shine if they’re not doing wacky comedies. Carrey was perfect in The Truman Show, and put in a solid performance in The Majestic. Both dramas, and about as far from Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber as it’s possible to get. Carry is underrated as a dramatic actor, IMHO.

Sandler is a little more complex. There’s a lot more to him than Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. He can do rom-coms (The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates), and he did a great job on the remake of The Longest Yard. Keep him away from the wacky screwball comedies, and he’s a pretty good entertainer.

So, I won’t watch some Carrey/Sandler films precisely because they’ve got Carrey/Sandler. Others, I’ll happily rewatch, precisely because they’ve got Carrey/Sandler.

It’s neither of those actresses. And the time doesn’t fit. I just watched the beginning of the pilot for that show. Seems to be funny.

Will Ferrell and Mike Myers are at the top of my list. It seems like they purposely seek out rolls as annoying characters.

You wouldn’t be the first to get something like that wrong. I knew Mahaffey had been in a show like you described, and I could imagine her being off-putting to some. A bit of googling found that Eve Gordon played the mistress of the main character, so I suggested her first. And, according to Wikipedia, Mahaffey’s character was also engaged in an affair.

According to the IMDb trivia, the producers of this show suggested to some colleagues that they find a role for David Hyde Pierce on the show they were creating. That turned out to be Frasier

I’d still like to figure out what actress and show you’re thinking of, but I can’t remember any politically-themed comedies from that era. Could it have been Soap? The time is correct, and everybody on that show was having an affair with somebody.

What’s that other lady…um?

“Pennies from Heaven” with Steve Martin.

In fact I hate him too.

ETA Bernadette Peters.

Oh, god. Leonardo DiCaprio makes me wanna barf.

Guess you haven’t been to a movie in the last 20 years!

I haven’t.

He was fabulous in MIB.
