Actors/resses that makes you NOT want to see a movie

Yes. He comes across that way to me in Good Will Hunting as well. Take this scene an example.

He come across as knowing better, not because he’s claiming he’s smarter, but because he’s implying his value system is better than the values of Stellan Skarsgard’s character. In this case he comes across as saying that no one should present hard challenges to those with a high level of talent because it’s emotionally manipulative. On top of that, he also implies that he would be perfectly fine with limiting human progress for the sake of avoiding putting pressure on those with talent.

I get the same vibe from him in all his other roles. Maybe it’s some other situation in other movies, but he still comes across as being better because he’s Robin Williams.

It’s not that they are ugly per se, but that they are consistently in hero/romantic lead roles, and I find that dispiriting. I’ll watch anything Giamatti is in.

Jennifer Tilly for the win. Horrible actor, and that awful baby doll voice that she affects just makes me homicidal. Melanie Griffith is a close second. Male actors have already been mentioned.

Jude Law for me and through no real fault of his own. I just found his character in Closer so pathetic and unattractive that I could never enjoy watching him again. I did watch him recently in Firebrand which was ok because he was meant to be repulsive.

Okay, cool, I can see that. Thanks. I mean I don’t agree in the sense that he doesn’t come across to me that way, but your descriptions of not just this character but with other characters of his (Adrian Cronauer also, I would imagine), yes I can see your points.

I’d forgotten about that scene and of how good Stellan Skarsgård was there.

Based on this, @FlikTheBlue’s points, of the actor I mentioned (Matt Dillon), and the other ones for the other posters here, I can’t help but think there is a visual and aural link to the actor’s looks and sounds with the effect that the actor has on us, that completes or at least connects the distasteful reaction for us.

I’ll admit that it’s true for Matt Dillon and me. Definitely true. It’s an emotional connection to that dislike. Might be true for others here.

I agree with this in spades. Other than this, I can’t agree with anything folks here are saying. Obviusly there’s no right or wrong, just opinions, but wow is this a tough crowd :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh, also, Fuck Norris. The only movie I enjoyed him in was The Way of the Dragon, where Bruce Lee killed his character.

I’d add Timothee Chalumet to the list of punch-able faces.

Juliette Lewis is horrible. She always seems like she doesn’t give a shit.

I remember one scene she id on " Golden Pond" where she dove into the pond. It was the phoniest most contrived scene I have ever seen. All about look at my body.

She dives into the pond, and suddenly all the conflict and bad feeling of the last hour and 49 minutes are dissolved and everybody loves one another again. I can’t believe this sophomoric drivel was nominated for an Oscar or any other award.

Well, Alan Arkin won an Oscar for his role in Little Miss Sunshine, mostly because he should have won an Oscar for some earlier role (e.g., The Russians are Coming!), but that movie had one actor in it that tends to dissuade me from seeing a movie: Greg Kinnear. He is probably not a bad actor, really, but the characters he plays always seem to rub me the wrong way.

Sorry, are we talking about the same movie here (On Golden Pond, which I really did not care for)? Or just that my comment applies to movies in general?

Alana Arkin was great in The Russians Are Coming (“Emergency: Everybody to get from street!”), but he really deserved an Oscar for playing creepy psychopath Harry Roat in Wait Until Dark (“Yeah, well I musta had my fingers crossed.”)

I love Little Miss Sunshine. But if you don’t like Greg Kinnear you won’t have to worry about them trying to get you to like him.

John Oliver is an idiot. Not to mention Jimmy did his part in WW2, flying dangerous missions. Jimmy Steward has actual medals, two oscars, two Globes, and about 100X the awards Oliver has.

And she is pretty. Okay we can disagree on beautiful, but come on.

Fantastic in Blackadder.

Spent a lot of time overseas entertaining the troops.

If you dont like Westerns, I guess.

But again, we have SDMBer listing actors who are proven great by awards, reviews and box office…

He ruined Casino Royale. Mind you that film had issues.

Yep, making fun of the handicapped is sick.

For more modern action heroes Jason Statham is to my mind a human-shaped black hole that sucks in any talent, interest and entertainment from every scene he appears in and renders it invisible.

No sorry, Jimmy Stewart, while no method actor, could really do the internal stuff. In his Anthony Mann Westerns it really shows. John Wayne and Randolph Scott would clench their jaws and squint before reacting, but Jimmy Stewart’s eyes would go crazy and then he’d look like he’d been dropped from ten thousand feet but the parachute was empty, and then there’d be some wild cowboy shit right away.

2 separate categories, political and aesthetic:

I won’t (very willingly) see a picture featuring Steven Seagal, Clint Eastwood, Kelsey Grammer et al (maybe I can be dragged). Just because I don’t want to put another nickel in their pockets and I’ve got a lot of choice in the matter.

Then there are the actors who lack talent, and I don’t understand how they even have a career: Adam Sandler, Will Feral et al. Gross out artists, cringe players.

But then again on the other hand, disliking an actor isn’t necessarily a matter of thinking that the actor is simply untalented. I cited Jim Carrey and Robin Williams earlier, both tremendously successful, obviously. Gut level, I just don’t react to either of them favorably (with the exception, as I said, of Williams playing a creepy character). Whether they’re good is a different question.

I always was amazed that somebody as creepy looking as him could succeed in rom-coms. But to say I don’t know what appeals to the ladies is an understatement.

Best typo of the thread.
