AIDS free Giraffe board?

I keep seeing these pop up ads for something like girraffe board.

The ads say things like “a board that won’t give you AIDS” or “a board that won’t ruin your life” and maybe some other similiar stuff that I can’t recall right now.

Is it some lame gay joke/jab kinda thing?

Or does AIDS stand for aquired intellectual deficiency syndrome? And if it does it ain’t that hip/cool/clever, because that joke was running around in my circles as soon as the real AIDS was in the news.

Or is it something else?

An enquiring mind wants to know.

Oh dear!

I was unaware the Mr. Boad had been kidnapped.

Moving MPSIMS --> ATMB, since it’s about ads.

As to what the ads mean, I guess you’d have to ask them.

I noticed it the other day. I suppose it’s intentionally politically incorrect in order to be funny, although I don’t find it particularly funny. I’m not offended or anything, but it’s not the cleverest slogan I’ve heard.

Sorry about posting that in the wrong place.

I’d ask them, but it might be some kind of reverse psychology trick. Go over there and get what I was told I could escape there. Or maybe its like those needles in the coin slot of a phone booth. I aint taking any chances.

And of course, here is that ad floating right above this posting window.

And if I’ve inadvertantly stirred up some shit or done a faux paux, my apologies.

I think the joke is just that it’s obvious that a message board would be AIDS free. It’s like advertising, I dunno, cereal - rabies free! Or something.

Nah. Who even associates AIDS with being gay, anymore?

Yeah, many yarons ago in the military I took on the job of running the snack area. Out of boredom, I’d send out ads like “special today! Soda for $1, 2 for only $2! Hurry while supplies last! Come get some delicious Mrs. Fields cookies! Guaranteed not to cause ebola or flesh-eating fasciitis!” Stupid stuff like that.

If someone would be so kind as to send a screen shot of this ad, we’d be obliged.

Thanks.

I took it to mean that it won’t give your computer a virus, as there is a current thread here in ATMB about malware in the Pit.

Here it be: giraffe.gif

The same people that worry that the topic of fried chicken will offend black people

TubaDiva. I’d do that for you but I don’t know how. If somebody else doesnt come through for you, tell me how and I’ll give it shot.

And shit its cold down here this morning. I made a skating rink out of tarp for the dog. We will see how he likes it in the morning.

Opps, someone beat me to it.

It’s a lot like here but with less facts and more drunk moderators. Only an idiot would spend any amount of time there.

Thanks.

My personal “favorite” of that type of ad was…oh, 2 or 3 iterations of the nutritional info panel on foods ago.

Some jelly company (Smuckers, I think) started advertising that they were “NOW FAT FREE!!!”.

Um…except that jelly/jam/preserves is pretty much always fat-free and (IIRC) fat messes up pectin so if you DID have fat, the jelly wouldn’t gell. The FDA squashed 'em like bugs.

Sorry if anyone was offended by the AIDS thing – it seemed funny at the time. You know, because you can’t actually get AIDS from a message board? I’ve since added a slogan “Finally, a message board that won’t ruin your life!” which is along the same lines without the reference to AIDS.

Also, it had nothing to do with recent allegations of malware on the SDMB, or with the SDMB at all, in fact – the ads aren’t site-specific, and run throughout the Google network, as well as on Google searches.

Anyway, I’m in the process of getting some new and better ideas for the ad text, so the AIDS thing will go away soon.

Poor Skylane!

:frowning:

It didnt offend me at least. I just was wondering what the thinking was there. And if I was missing some aspect of it. And you’ve explained it.

I think its one of those communication/humor things on the internet where text doesnt always convey nearly as well as a real human speaking/acting/whatevering in person.

Thanks.

FYI, here are the instructions on how to block sites from your AdSense network. Any site can be blocked from advertising on the SDMB – it’s like a site-wide ignore list.

Personally, I’ll be a bit surprised if the staff deems our site more offensive than the Scientology, term paper, or secrets of the bible ads to the point that they don’t want our money, but that’s of course their call to make.
