Hilarious and oh so wrong.
Is anyone else picturing this being said in the same voice Darth Vader used to say “I find your lack of faith disturbing”?
I look and sound more like the space balls version of vader actually
[Rick Moranis]I can’t breathe in this thing[/RM]
Offensive?? Shucks, I thought the ad was hilarious. I share your surprise!
And as always, there’s a relevant XKCD.
That’s a tall order.
Did I not mention that we cured AIDS?
I logged off as a user and looked at the board to see the Google ads.
In ten threads I saw the Giraffe ad eight times.
For something not site specific 80% is . . . well, I’d like to have these odds at the table just once.
Makes perfect sense–SDMB comes up at the 'Raffe pretty often so it’s logical Google would think they have overlap, not to mention the crosslinking.
[TWEEET!]
Please take your logic and sense elsewhere, Ms Troublemaker.
[/TWEEET!]
Sorry, I haven’t started drinking yet–I’ll fix that, shall I?
Hurm.
Just to clarify, I meant I didn’t write the ad with the SDMB in mind, i.e. I wasn’t trying to say “the SDMB will give you AIDS, come post at Giraffeboards instead”, I was trying to write text that might pique the interest of any random person doing a Google search and cause them to click on the link, regardless of whether they’ve ever heard of the SDMB or not.
Also, there are two ways to advertise via Google ads. One is to let Google choose what sites the ads run on based on its own keywords analysis (it creates a Content Network – we’ve had the most hits from the SDMB, but also from doubleclick.net, MySpace and others), the other is to buy ad time on specific websites. I did the former, not the latter.
Just looked at all the forums index pages.
Also looked at random pages from all over the board, with content all over the map, as you would expect from various forum areas, topics that greatly varied.
Every time Google was displayed . . . what a surprise. Every time.
I guess Google really is Giraffe’s friend.
That’s very strange. I’ve been looking here for quite a while since I heard about the ads and never saw them. Today I finally found one of them. All this time I was not logged in and right now is the first time I logged in. I still don’t see them. I guess it’s nothing to do with giraffeboards.com and is truly random in nature. Which I think is the way Google ads are intended to work.
If as others have stated, the Google ads work by matching an ad to words in the thread then the only way to test this would be to start a thread about giraffes and see what comes up. Want me to start one in GQ? I do actually have a question about giraffes I’d like answered.
Tuba, are you trying to imply that Giraffe is a liar?
It’d have been even better if I’d got in before the Edit ‘timeout’ with my “Look’s like Giraffe is down!” alteration. Bah!
The tone of your post makes it sound like you feel I’ve somehow done something wrong here. I’m paying for any ads that appear, through the channels you guys set up years ago. I have absolutely no control over whether Google chooses to serve my ad in place of one for cars or vacation packages or underpants. The fact that Google has identified our site as a higher probability of generating a click than other ads should be good news to you as advertisers – you get paid by the click, so it’s money in your pocket.
If you’d prefer not to have these ads run on your site, it’s beyond trivial for you to block them. Just use the link I included upthread.
P.S. Is there any way a mod could fix the spelling of my name in the thread title? It’s driving me nuts.
Aw, now Tuba darlin’, you know you have no control over the Google ads: you’ve said so repeatedly. So, just ignore them as you’ve so often recommended others to do: after all, they’re just a bit of fun, and it’s not like they’re a shill for Scientology, Secrets of the Bible or Get Ripped Fast!, are they? I mean, what kind of site would stoop to accepting money for hawking crap like that?
