AIDS free Giraffe board?

I thought it was intentional, though I could be wrong.

Oh I see an ad for Gumtree.com. It says they are “active friendly Forums. Extremely Popular - Free Service!” Should I send a screenshot of that one?

Shit! If Gumtree has found this place, it’s all over.

Your fight against ignorance is about to go through a whole new phase.

You think I should send a screenshot to Tubadiva? I mean, it’s not there now but I’m sure it will cycle round fast.

Nothing I do is intentional…unless of course I am saying it was to make me look clever rather than stupid…and as often as not its a lie

Actually, taking the pragmatic view of things, ads = revenue, the Straight Dope gets paid to run 'em. Every little bit helps keep this place keeping on and that’s a good thing.

So thanks.

Wow, nice. Thanks for being cool about it, and for all that you do for the site.

The reason being that you are drawing from a very small pool of paying ads. 90% of the ads I get here are Public Service Announcements (Red Cross and that kind of stuff for which you don’t get paid. This is an option you have when using Google ads) which makes me think that Google just doesn’t have the ads to serve you.

The Giraffe Boards are probably more at a loss here than you are since he is paying to have those ads shown to an audience that is not of his interest (presumably everybody here already knows of the GB and likes/hates it accordingly). You are getting paid to show those ads which are of no detriment to you (for the same reasons as above).

ETA: or as you said it yourself just above.

As someone without an ax to grind (though in the interest of disclosure, I am also registered at Giraffeboards - but owe it no loyalty), I can reassure you that the advertiser has no control over which channel their ad appears: it’s entirely up to Google.

I speak as someone who has been advertising on Google on a professional basis for coming-up-to 10 years.

So, while the “ads = revenue” statement is correct, please be assured that the statement “advertister = relying on Google to serve the ads up wherever its algorithm feels it’s appropriate” is also correct.

nvm

I would think the relevant data would be what fraction of the Girrraffe board ads were here Vs. elsewhere, not what fraction of ads on the SDMB were Girrrrraffe board ads Vs. other ads. Those are two different things. Although I suspect, since Da Google knows all, those two fractions are related.
(Why yes, that was intentional. :p)

Would you like us to take the spare “r” in “Girraffe” and stick it in “boad”?

Mr Boad would probably NOT like you shoving an “r” in between his “a” and his “d” even if it is a spare.

Then again maybe Mr. Boad likes pirate love.

Goddamnit, I’m a member of both boards and all I’m getting is an offer to cure my eating disorder and another one to help me discover the secret of whiter teeth. Oh, and Obama wants me to go back to school.

Thread title corrected. It was bothering me, also.

I guess the “r” could go there, too.

Giraffe Boards - Where lizards go to die

Note: Both of those slogans were shamelessly stolen from a contest I read about for Bakersfield CA to create a slogan for the city. Those were two of the better entries.

Oh, Bakersfield. :sciencefail:

As I recall, that was ANOTHER board sprung from this.

I’m hoping to see “Giraffeboards: Our moderators freely admit that their actions are capricious and arbitrary”.

No reference or offense to anyone here, of course.
