Does anyone know what the picture is on the tail of the Alaskan Airlines jets? They keep showing them on TV, and I can’t help thinking that it looks like one of those giant Che Guevera posters.
The picture on the tail of the Alaska Airlines jets is an eskimo.
Not very helpful, but the Eskimo in question was a specific person, not a generic Aleut. I can’t begin to remember his name but he died a few years back.
If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Really? According to cover of the Alaska Airlines Almanac, downloadable in Adobe Acrobat format from the Alaska/Horizon Airlines Website ,
It wouldn’t be the first time a company messed up/hid their own history, of course, but I’d tend to go with the airline on this one.

Now I know the SDMB is back. I’ve already had time to be wrong.
Notice I didn’t just recall that it was a specific guy but that he had died! That’s pretty good recollection for something that didn’t happen.
There was a bush pilot by the name of Mudhole Smith who was a legend among the folks at Alaska Airlines. Apparently he died just before Alaska Airlines adopted the tail design. I recall speculation that he was used as a model for the Eskimo, I guess as some sort of tribute. There’s a picture of Mudhole Smith on Alaska Airlines’ website, but I don’t really see the resemblence apart from the furry hat.
