I live in Columbus, Ohio, and the power went out this morning and just came back on. Doubt it was connected to the other power outages though, as there is a lot of construction going on around here.
Not a single luxury? Say Hi to Ginger & Maryanne for me.
Got report South Shore, LI up and humming. Up at work, Yonkers & Rockland county are fine, Southern New Rochelle / Pelham areas are still down.
I hope everyone’s been evacuated from all the stalled out elevators by now…there’s only so long one’s bladder can hold out.
Also speaking from South Shore, LI (JohnBckWLD, I’m about 20 minutes from you), we got our power back about 1130 last night. A friend of mine in southern Suffolk just got her power back about 2 hours ago, although friends in northern Suffolk had their power back around 730 last night.
I’m hearing rumor of there being some more blackouts today just to save energy or some crap. Blech!
Around noon today I heard that Queens didn’t have power, or at least parts of it.
I phoned OxyMoron a little while ago. He’s fine; he and his boyf got on the PATH to New Jersey (which has power) and hung out in a Barnes & Noble all day.
Whew, finally!! 24 hours with computer was making me twitchy.
Well, that was fun, huh kids? Got to eat all the ice cream and popsicles and using the bathroom in the dark and not being able to flush, that’s a special treat.
I’m halfway between Ann Arbor and Detroit, our power came back around 4 pm.
We just got some juice back.
Things were looking bad in terms of water supply. We live in a high rise; no water, and we have some tenants who are elderly and can’t be evacuated. Let’s see YOU carry a few gallons up 35 stories.
I don’t expect the power to stay on but we’re hoarding water while we can. Wish us luck.
This frankly does not say a great deal for our power system. Some American power plant goes on the fritz, and our entire grid dies? I think we need to work on this.
My turn to chime in. Power went out at 4:12 or whenever, and just came back on…5:34pm or so. So that was over 24 hours sans power.
Spectacular chance for viewing Mars and the Perseids though
Here in my home on Long Island (a few towns away from JohnBckWld) we were without power for about twelve hours, starting at 4:10 PM yesterday.
My dad was at the dentist when the power went out, but they got done with the most important procedure before the blackout - he’ll have to go back for the other thing he needed done. My mom also had a dentist appointment - she was gonna head there straight from work & arrive at about 5:30 PM.
They both said that the driving situation was pretty hairy, considering the utter lack of operational traffic lights. We heard lots of sirens as we sat in the backyard during the first couple hours. The water situation wasn’t too bad - the pressure was pretty weak, but we used it sparingly. Drank up the milk & the lemonade.
Only thing that worries me is that I’m supposed to be heading into Manhattan with a friend tomorrow night via the Long Island Railroad, but I’ve called twice & not gotten her. I know her boyfriend (with whom she lives) works in the city - I wonder if he got home allright, or if she got stuck at school. (She’s a grad student at a uni not far from their apartment; she takes the public bus to & from school.).
On the other hand, they have a bad habit of not answering their damn phone.
If she’s home & okay, we then have to deal with the fact that we’ve been eagerly planning a night out in Manhattan for over a week. We’ll see if the trains’re operational by then & if the space is open & running. That, however, is just an irritation. We’ll see if she calls me.
Small town in Southern Ontario, near a main juncture in the power grid. I was working in the chocolate factory at the time the power went out.
I was lucky. Last time, I was up on a mezzanine between a chocolate temperer and some pipes and conduits. This time I was just sitting at the computer.
Didn’t have anything but cereal for supper yesterday, because I’d put off buying groceries. No big deal.
Power was back on at 2000 Eastern time, about six hours after it went off.
I’m just glad I wasn’t one of those miners stuck underground in Sudbury.
Well, let’s see… here in Toronto there were many pedestrians directing raffic, and most drivers were actually obeying them which made things relatively orderly, all things considered.
After dark…
Children were running around with flashlights, squealing in delight, as if it was a giant slumber party.
And the adults… were running around with flashlights, squealing in delight as if it was a giant slumber party.
So we got a long weekend out of it.
And now I must go find me a super-soaker and attack my neighbours.
See ya!
I was in the city yesterday and got stuck in the train. I had to wait about 3 and a half hours until we could go… Then I had to walk from Manhattan all the way back to my home in Queens… not fun.
My power just came back on for the second time at 7-ish. I better go do a load of laundry before it goes out again, or I won’t have anything to wear to work tomorrow.
I’m doing fine, just posted about my treck from mid-town
BtW anybody heard from Wono the Sane, Banger, or Biggirl, or Manhattan?
I didn’t get power back until 24 hours later, almost to the minute
Biggirl is ok, I saw her posting in some other threads. She had a hell of a walk, but is fine.
Well, most of the evening, I just stared across the Ottawa river into Quebec, where there were lights galore. And it pissed me off mightily:D.
My dilemma was: Do I go down 11 flights of stairs, get into my car, fight the traffic and drive to Hull (Quebec) to spend a good part of the evening and then return, fight the traffic and climb said eleven flights of stairs before turning in for the night. I decided to wile away the hours at home and finally went to bed around 10:45 PM [I had to point my watch at passing cars headlights to see what time it was:D because, of course, there was no candle or flashlight to be found in the apartment].
I woke up around 4:30 AM and noticed that my alarm clock was blinking. Needless to say I couldn’t get back to sleep so I began my day early and transferred stuff from the freezer back to the refrigerator. Oddly enough, it was still pitch black outside but the power had returned in our building. Still no cable as I type, but I had access to the Internet as early as 5:00 this morning.
I couldn’t contain my joy when I learned today that there could be rolling bown-outs for the next week or so, until the system is fully back online.
My siblings are in Downriver Detroit (Allen Park & Dearborn). My sisters camped out in their backyard with the kids because it was cooler outside and fired up the grill to cook some frozen food. My sister-in-law is due with a little girl on Thursday; she was supposed to go to the doctor today, where they would decide whether or not to induce her because her blood pressure’s been high. I haven’t heard anything one way or another regarding that, so wish her luck - let’s hope she doesn’t have to give birth in a dark hospital.
i live in the south eastern corner of PA and nothing happened here…nothing ever happens here. Apparently our counties are intricately linked to smaller power sources around the area so when they heard about the blackout, the power companies flipped a switch (like a BIG BIG circuit breaker) and cut us off from the blackout…so we kept on going and laughed at jersey…as we tend to do kidding.
my mom called me at work when she first heard about it…the woman petrified me, she made it sound like all of america was going down the tubes.
but hey, had that been the case - we live near lancaster…worst comes to worst, we move in with the amish…
I was at my family’s summer cottage in Michigan’s UP for the past week, got home tonight. Apparently here in Dearborn, MI, power came back on in my neighborhood 20 minutes before I rolled up in the driveway. So except for a few flashing clocks and some sour milk in the fridge (which would’ve gone sour whether the power went out or not), I’d say I survived the 2003 Blackout pretty well.
The last blackout I experienced was my birthday 2002. It was early February, and an ice storm cut out all the power in a 15-block area. I had a black-tie dinner that night, and let me tell you, showering in a house that’s 38 degrees F is no picnic. And trying to squeeze into a rented tux by birthday-candle light is no day at the beach either.
Happy
I’m glad to know that you’re all okay, albeit understandably annoyed. d_redguy and I were without heat, water and power for a week last winter, due to a ridiculous ice storm. It really sucked. I mind hot more than cold, though, so I’m glad I wasn’t in your situation. Questions and Comments:
jjimm, I really liked your image. Very cool.
Amp, where do your parents live? One of my best friends lives in University Heights. When I spoke with her late last night/early this morning, they were still out (water, too). She’s got no landline telephone and now her cell isn’t working. Any news on that area?
Ellen Cherry, whereabouts do you live? Maybe we suffered through the same ice storm.
aaaaaarrgg, were you one of the folks who had to walk through dark tunnels to get out, or was it mostly painless?
RickJay, good for you! I’m so glad to hear that you are helping out your neighbors.
Good luck heartily wished, for everyone affected.
We were out for 24 hours. Just north of us, there was power, and a lot of people drove up there for gas, food, ice, etc. I mean, a LOT OF PEOPLE. Incredible gridlock.
We had a water emergency, too, which made the heat worse.
My son wasn’t bothered, surprisingly enough. Thought it was an adventure.
I was damn glad I’d laid in “disaster supplies” last fall. Some board thread were devoted to making fun of those of us who did. Vindication!
