Alternatives to Prep-H?

As you may have guessed by the subject, this is a thread about hemorroids. Specifically mine. Even though this is embarassing to post, I need the straight dope on how to get rid of this annoying, itching and burning swelling in my nether regions.

Here’s the scoop on what I’ve done.

They started last Friday. I woke up and there they were. I’ve tried Anusol HC-1 ointment (With hydrocortsone even!) and after 4 days of using that, it doesn’t do much except help with the pain. I’ve tried cleaning thoroughly with warm water… no change. I’ve even tried Witch Hazel with no results.

What is a good remedy? Let me know because I’m growing kind of concerned that this isn’t going away.

Talk about a pain in the butt… :: Ducks and runs ::

I’ve seen “Americaine” in Walgreens. Lots of Benzocaine in that. Works wonders, after the initial stinging.

The other option is vise grips and a pair of diagonal cutters.

Go to the health food store and get a homeopathic product by Weleda called either Balsamicum sp? or Heilsalbe. They are pretty much the same thing. Let us know how it works out.

Most of us here are not doctors. I’m a doctor of divinity, but it’s just a piece of paper. Because I’m no MD, I suggest you see one. You might have, not a hemmoroid (sp?) but an infection of a different sort. Over-the-counter remedies are only temporary anyway, and serious hemmies will eventually have to be dealt with by an MD.

Prep h is mostly petrolium jelly & mineral oil. Just buy a jar of Vasaline. That, & a prescription I use occasionally does the trick for me.

But, go to the doc first. OK?

Prep-H has a compound in it to not only reduce pain, but shrinks the swollen tissues. Those other things you mentioned are for pain only.

Suggestion here: start eating more fiber, even to taking fiber laxatives, which softens your, uh ‘refuse’ and places less strain on the hemorrhoid tissue causing less outbreaks of pain, itching and swelling. (I know from personal experience.) Stool softeners in pill form are not recommended for frequent usage plus the common fiber powder laxative works to prevent the usual mild diverticulitus older people get.

Prep-H works well and I even know people who use a fresh tube to apply to their faces because it diminishes, for a time, wrinkles, pimples and other signs of aging! Pretty cool huh? A medication for use on butt and mug!

With proper care, you may never require surgery. Mine have been companions for over 10 years and because of my addition of fiber laxative to my diet, rarely cause me any serious problems.

They just made me feel like an old fart for a time.

First, get a diagnosis. See a doc. In the differential:
1)Thrombosed hemorrhoid, or one with a blood clot in it. Best to have it lanced, reduces the pain real fast, but only after an initial extreme increase in pain.
2)Rectal fissure. Hurts, bleeds, needs different treatment
3)Rectal fistula. see point 2)
4)Rectal Abscess. Hurts a lot, puts your whole sphincter at risk.
5)Regular hemorrhoids. Many options available once the diagnosis is made.
6)Other. includes rectal warts, herpes, other lesions.
