A thrombosed one that is… I’ve tried PreperationH and hydrocortisone cream, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? (Besides surgery.)
Thrombosed ones hurt like hell. If I have a patient present to me early in the course of the thrombosis, I’ll go ahead and lance the damn thing and just pop the clot out. Otherwise it’s weeks of pain waiting for the thrombus to shrink. Topical shrinking agents won’t help much, because the problem is the clot in the vein, not the swollen tissue on the outside. Topical anesthetics provide less relief as well because of this fact, but they might be worth a try.
Consult your doc, and while waiting, take plenty of sitz baths, and possibly a stool softener to make your #2’s a little less uncomfortable.

Ya, Ive tried those there Preparation H things, and they didn’t help a damn bit. For all the good they do,“I mite as well have shoved them up my ass”
Seriously, there are people out there that do not know how to use those little silver bullets, and are to embarrassed to ask or seek medical help.
I know a nurse who lanced her own 'roid. She put one foot on the toilet seat and used a mirror and a sharp pair of sissors…It was a fascinating fourth of July barbecue conversation!
Okay, ha ha, hee hee… All jokes aside now… No one knows of a non-surgical procedure to get rid of it? And I’m having a hard time believing that nurse story. She would have passed out from the pain. Believe me, I know…
Ah, but as a nurse she would have access to topical anesthetics, lidocaine, etc. Who knows what one could nik from a hospital? And if she gets a little toasted on alcohol or something, that would help.
I don’t have a hard time in the least believing that nurse story.
Anything you’d apply directly to the hemorrhoid would only serve to ease the suffering. The whole “shrinks swelling” line is a load of crap. For this purpose, Anusol seems to work pretty well. Nasty, sticky, messy stuff, but it does its job.
For something that really works (aside from more aggressive approaches described above), I’d recommend Metamucil. Regular use (no pun intended) will relieve the pressure that causes the problem.

With contempt…
Hot baths are a good therapy, Good vigours washing, With washcloth, not just a rub of a bar of soap. Don’t sit and grunt, hold off until its a code-3 emergency, then hope like hell the bifs vacant. In other words modify some old habits.
And those silver bullets do go right up there.
Warm baths. Go with a bathtub over an actual sitz bath. Depending on how painful the thrombosis is, you can massage the area a bit and if it’s small and not painful you can often gently push the prolapse “back in” with a little lubricant after/during a warm bath.
Okay, thanks to the people who answered with some insightful information. I’ll try the warm baths for the next few weeks. Hopefully this works, because about a week ago, another 'roid just came in. So now I’m dual wielding here. ouch Its painful even when I do go out of my way to eat tons of fiber. Also, I heard a rumor that a solution of 50% camomile tea and 50% wtch hazel lotion will get rid of the clot. Is this true? Should I even attempt to waste my money?
Nah. Now that your roid has a friend, the only way out is surgery.
Provided your little friend is external, the procedure isn’t that bad - it takes ten minutes and the worst part is getting a shot of anasthetic right in the ol’ butthole. After that, the doc cuts out the clot, shoves a big wad of cotton between your cheeks to controll swelling and you lie on your side for a couple days. Believe me, there is no feeling better in the world than suddenly NOT having a roid.
One piece of advice - use the toilet before you have the operation then try to live on a liquid diet for the next couple days. Those Slim-Fast meal replacement shakes will give your rear end a chance to relax.
If possible seek competent medical advice and have the MD apply the ‘rubber band’ ala animal castration technique. Not only gets rid of the clot but almost all of the hemorrhoid as well. The isolated tissue atrophoies and falls off. no mess no fuss.
I was amazed at how fast I got mine. Went to bed one night just fine, then woke in the morning with this pain in my ass.
Fortunately mine wasn’t very large. I saw the doctor and he said that if I kept it clean, it would go away on its own. I did, and it did, but it took about 2 1/2 weeks.
Definately see a doctor about it.

How to handle a hemorrhoid?
“Do I flatter it?” I begged him answer.
“Do I threaten or cajole or plead?
Do I brood or play the gay romancer?”
Said the board, smiling: "No indeed.
How to handle a hemorrhoid?
Mark me well, I will tell you, sir:
The way to handle a hemorrhoid
Is to love it…simply love it…
Merely love it…love it…love it."

For God’s sake, see a doctor. I tried home remedies until I couldn’t bear it any longer. When your doctor takes a look at whatever’s ailing you and yells “Jesus”, you know it’s gone too far.
No, surgery might not be required, but a doctor will know that and you won’t be in danger of letting things get blown out of hand.
I did a bit of probing today and it looks like I now I have three hemorrhoids. One of them, I’ve had for about 4 years and isn’t too bad. But the last two are really tender and painful. Can someone please give an overview of the surgery procedure? It looks like I have no choice. I heard it is one of the mose painful procedures known to man. Is that true? How many doctors are involved? I really want to go but I’m just afraid of the embarassment.
Someone before gave a description of the easy outpatient way. Depending on how bad you are, you may have to have a real inpatient surgery. I can’t tell you what exactly goes on 'cause I was under a general. I can tell you that:
[li] you will hate yourself and everyone around when you wake up.[/li][li] your first bowel movement will feel like an M-80.[/li][li] you will grow to love the metallic taste in your mouth from intramuscular morphine during your recovery if you’re checked in somewhere.[/li]
On the other hand, once you’ve had one bowel movement, the others will be no more painful than you’re dealing with now and the pain will be all gone in about a week. As for embarassment, trust me: the surgeon has seen this sort of thing so many times before that it’s completely boring. Besides, would you rather be embarassed or have your ass blow up?
I wouldn’t suggest using Tiger Balm. Apparently surgery is possible, but I’ve heard it is more painful then Tiger Balm.
See my and Mathochist’s posts above. The big question is if they’re internal (you can’t see them) or external (outside the anus). If external, great. The doc can either slice them open and remove the clot, letting them heal naturally, or simply chop them off altogether. The most painful aspect is getting the numbing shot. It’s really not that bad if you can stay off your butt for a couple days.
Internal 'roids are another matter…
And don’t worry about embarrasment - just make sure your bottom is clean and well wiped before you hop up onto the examination table and everything will be fine.
