How was I disproven, exactly?
Sigh. Ok, as you wish. I am hereby replacing the usage of the word “hate” with “dislike, or didnt care for”. “dislike or didnt care for finding nemo”. Is that better?
I didn’t care for “Finding Nemo.” I found Albert Brooks and Ellen’s voice work kinda grating. Sometimes when people are all crazy about a film, it amplifies the things you don’t like about it.
Why all the hate towards Cars? My family loves that movie. A Bug’s Life, I can understand, but Cars?
There are some great Pixar Short Films. Boundin’ about the Jackelope who helps the sheep is my favorite. http://www.metatube.com/en/videos/38424/Boundin-Pixar-HD-Short-Film-Walt-Disney/
It was uninspired (almost a perfect remake of Doc Hollywood…but with cars), dull, not funny, had Larry the Cable Guy, shallow, and took place in a world that doesn’t make sense on any level (which is the least of its problems).
Bug’s Life also wasn’t great, but was otherwise inoffensive. I wish I could say the same of Cars.
I find this to be a weird argument against. Who the hell cares if it’s got a similar plot to a previous, not particularly popular, movie? It’s not like it’s an unprecedented act to have come up with a similar idea, or be inspired by concepts that have come before. It sure doesn’t stop horror movies from being continually and unfeasibly popular.
It wasn’t an argument so much a supporting statement. There’s a difference between homage and shameless ripoff, particularly when the end result is inferior to the original and comes from a studio otherwise renowned for its creativity. And I actually watched Cars first, unaware it was a ripoff, and still detested it for every other cited reason. For the first time, I really felt like Pixar was pandering to a younger audience.
I had my red ipod engraved

MINE MINE MINE !
I really liked the surfer turtles =)
AGreed, it was highly dull and larry the cable guy is one of the most annoying people on this planet.
Most pixar films don’t work for you. You say in the Sucker Punch thread that you hate chick flicks and that you think Sucker Punch looks horrible.
Now you’ve got me intrigued as to what movies you do like. Granted, that is a pretty small list but it still makes me wonder what your 2 or 3 favorite movies are and if you have any particular genres that you enjoy.
My main criticisms of Cars are as follows:
-It’s a “close adaptation” (or “rip-off” if you prefer)
-The universe makes no sense
-It’s a pretty transparent marketing ploy (as opposed to, say, “Up”)
-White male-centric nostalgia for the 1950’s. The movie portrays the 50’s as the “good old days” (which they were, unless you were female, black, immigrant, or poor).
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good movie, but I have it fairly far down the list of favorite Pixar films. Finding Nemo is far superior, IMO.
Take it easy .
I didn’t say you couldn’t claim that you “hated” certain movies. You asked me if I “hated” any movies, and I said that it just takes quite a lot for me to get that worked up about a film. You can hate whatever you want, I don’t really care. It’s your opinion.
I definitely see this happening with a lot of movies. It can feel strange when everyone else seems to love something that leaves you cold. I feel that way towards several movies that my family likes; I went with my parents to see Night at the Museum, for example. They thought it was absolutely hilarious, I found the jokes somewhat dull, and it was kind of awkward to sit there with them guffawing through the whole thing.
I love FN and all of the Pixar movies. There has yet to be one I felt even just “meh” about. And having Larry the Cable Guy as the voice of the sweet, innocent, caring, care free Mater is what puts Cars in my top 5 of Pixar movies.
My brain must be broken, because I read this and thought “That makes no sense; the 1950s were the best time to be Buick!”
I recently complained in another thread that I don’t like computer animated movies, Finding Nemo is my exception.
We watched FN a ton freshman year, that and a lot of Eddie Izzard, maybe we just liked things that were quotable. Even though FN wasn’t a great movie I still get the warm fuzzies when I think of it.
I really disliked UP, in fact I would go so far as to say I hated it. I can’t really put my finger on why either. It bothers me that so many people loved UP when I had such an extreme but largely inarticulate aversion to it.
The thing about Up is that once Carl takes off in his house, the movie sort of goes all over the place (literally and figuratively). It must have been tough to come up with ideas to move the story along while still keeping the house and Carl’s quest central to the movie. There seemed to have been a few points in the plot where the writers almost wrote themselves into a corner. For example, Russell is a funny sidekick for Carl but he doesn’t really have as much of an effect on Carl’s character development as Ellie’s book does. His and Carl’s relationship is pretty one-dimensional until Carl reads the rest of the book, then suddenly Russell practically becomes Carl’s adoptive kid/grandkid.And I also found it strange that Charles Muntz was still alive all those years later - he’s at least 20 years older than Carl which would probably make him 95-100 years old if not older. It was neat to have him turn out to be the antagonist, but some suspension of disbelief was required.Still, I thought Up was a fun movie - perhaps not the tightest story that Pixar has ever told, but all in all a good caper.
Well the sucker punch one is just an observation from commercials. I’ll probably see it and give it a chance, so we’ll see. Is sucker punch a pixar movie?
My top favorite movies are:
The godfather
Millenium Actress
Spirited Away
The Matrix
The Matrix Revolutions
And you think we’re nuts for liking Finding Nemo
