Amazing Race 5/3 - "Man, They Should Have Used Fake Names"

Ya know, they really should think twice before putting Phil on the mat next to a tall, handsome Aussie carrying a bullwhip. The slashfic writer in me is already working overtime…

Ok…NO PENALTY for Eric & Jer? THIS is BULLSHIT! (And no, my ox isn’t broken!) How can cancelling someone’s cab, not be against the rules?? Even if they ultimately lost no time (and neither did Eric & Jer, even with Instant Karma) they deserve some kind of punitive penalty. Like, disqualification. Or at least a 30 minute penalty box.

Maybe the penalty will come next week? Perhaps, Phil & production haven’t had a chance to review the tapes yet. If that’s the case…will they give BJ his shoes back??

As if that’s not enough…Eric’s resorting to macking on the chicks from other teams. Women who are attached to their partners, not just friends (like Zach/Flo) or ex-wives (Tara/Wil). That’s just not cool, Eric. He must really be overcompensating for his secret attraction to Tyler.

Rayolanda had a great leg. I don’t think they’ll win, but who knows? All TAR fans know to bet on (a) the Alpha Male team, or (b) the Black Couple. (Or, in rare cases, the Dysfunctional Screaming Flo. But let’s not go there, shall we?) The Hippies have no hope, because my favorite team NEVER wins. :frowning: Interesting, though, to see the Hippies getting stripped of all their Earthly possessions, true Hippie Style. I’ll bet they’ll wind up skyclad by the final leg!

Not that I’d mind seeing that, but you’re going to send Otto with a sour stomach with that kind of imagery.

…you’re going to send Otto to bed with a sour stomach with that kind of imagery.

Rassin’frassin’stupid non-previewing me…

Have we seen a previous penalty for intentionally causing a transportation delay? Don and Mary Jean got a 30 minute penalty for taking the wrong vehicle and delaying Adam and Rebecca, but that was unintentional and I don’t remember if it was stated on-screen that the penalty was for causing the delay or for taking their stuff or what. We’ve definitely seen teams snipe each others’ taxis before with no penalty, we’ve had teams instruct drivers not to call cabs for other teams with no penalty, we’ve seen teams buy tickets for teams at the back of the line causing teams toward the front of the line to lose out on the flight with no penalty. If there’s no penalty for trying to convince a cab driver not to call more cabs or for cutting people out of flights (intentionally or otherwise) by buying more tickets than you need for your team, it seems somehow unreasonable to penalize a team for cancelling another team’s pre-arranged cab. That would indicate that it’s OK under the rules to attempt to interfere with someone’s transportation but that it’s not OK to succeed at it, which would be very strange.

Clearly there will be no penalty, because if there was it would have been done at the end of this leg, so that Eric and Jeremy ended up last instead of the Granola Boys.

I think there is a definitive difference in messing with some one’s personal property and cancelling a cab they arranged. And I would suspect that under the rules, when provided a car that is considered the team’s property, so you can’t go slashing the tires of your opponents, you can’t take their clue when they aren’t looking. It may be a fine line to some, but honestly I think that cancelling the cabs was very smart,

This is a game first, a vacation second, and a social gathering last.

I don’t see how cancelling someone’s cab wouldbe against the rules. It is obviously not against the rules to interfere with each other’s travel plans in other ways, such as convincing a ticket agent to lie about available seating on a plane, for instance, which we have seen from the beginning of the show.

I can. At the airport, if you got lied too they can always go somewhere else. Calling a cab though you would be expecting it and waiting for it. Look what happens if you can’t find one, you can get pretty far behind. It would almost be the same as canceling someone’s plane tickets or changing a sign saying a place opened later then it really does.

Yeah, that was a funny line (Tyler’s line, that is, BJ’s was still ass), and it was funny because it was spontaneous and unforced. If they’d had time to plan out another of their wacky-ass bits, it wouldn’t have been funny. But because Tyler’s comment was organic and of the moment, it was funny. If they did that all the time, showing the funny when the funny comes instead of trying to bludgeon the funny into places where no funny there be, I’d find them much more likeable despite their being, you know, dirty filthy hippies.

He’s got no shoes! HE’S GOT NO SHOES!

Thailand air is probably the only airline that will let you board without shoes. And it does make going through airport security faster. But someone not wearing shoes should know not to try running over rocks.

And poutine. With the ketchup Steven Harper didn’t put on the babies he ate.

If I may quote myself from post #16 above:

She said that they were specifically told they’re not allowed to cancel each others’ plane reservations, so one would assume that canceling a cab reservation would be similar. And we have seen a lot of penalties applied after the fact, at the beginning of the next leg, so I suspect we haven’t seen the end of this one yet.

Of course, I (and Tammy) may be totally wrong, too. But I’m not willing to assume that just because we haven’t seen a penalty yet doesn’t mean we won’t.

Except that on TAR, plane reservations are handled through the production company’s credit account, which might undergo some trouble should there be too much monkeying around with charges tentatively posting and then getting withdrawn. The account could get frozen and leave all racers stranded at the airport, while the paid staff at some route marker watches the clock tick by…

A cab cancellation does not carry the same burden.

Ah, ambiguity in language…is Tammy saying that while cancelling a cab is not against the rules it ought to be, is she saying she thinks it is against the rules based on her interpretation, is she saying it’s stated flat-out in the rule book that it’s a violation, what?
And speaking of Ray, except we weren’t speaking of Ray but now I am, I was very amused, after he won the Mercedes lease, that he asked Phil if the car he gets would have a left-side drive. Heh.

Well, I’m inclined to put some credence in the view of someone who was on the race just last season. She’s not a race rules lawyer, of course, but her first response was shocked outrage that they would violate the rules so blatantly, so that definitely carries some weight with me.

Well, yeah, I was pretty shocked by it too for a minute and I figured it had to be a penalty, except that based on our currently imperfect information it’s not. We all probably assumed during Tammy’s race that the Linzes and the Whoevers who got their batteries drained by the production team would get time credits for it but they apparently didn’t, so our assumptions aren’t really the best basis.

Simul-post, Otto. Here, you can decide for yourself. This is exactly what she said:

Flat-out “against the rules.” And she’s probably had a more detailed explanation of them than any of us (unless someone here is a former racer, obviously). So I’m willing to wait till next week to see what happens.

   I must be tired. What does this have to do with TAR ?

I’m not reading this thread. I’m not reading this thread!

I didn’t get to watch it last night - but I DVR’d it. Looking forward to it!

Someone the other day hacked electronic signs on Toronto public transit to say “Stephen Harper eats babies.” Nothing to do with TAR, except The Big Cheese was asking about watching TAR while in Canada.

I’m aware of the hacking (and the prime sinister should be glad that it was so innocent). I just don’t understand its relationship with TAR, since I pointed to The Big Cheese when and where to watch TAR in Canada.
