Amazing Race All Stars Ep. 2: "Beauty Is Sometimes Skin Deep"

Mirna and Schmirna were upset because they’d paid the cabbie to lead them to the Pit Stop and the BQs were following them, thus getting a free guide on Mirna’s dollar. They stopped and demanded that the BQs either go on ahead or pay for half the cab.

Now, M&C had a point. But even when Mirna has a point, she has to take it way beyond where it belongs. And the whole part after the BQs went on ahead and everybody and their chihuahua passed C&M, where they went absolutely shrill on the cabbie, I don’t understand. It is, however, typical of Mirna, at least. Every now and then, for no apparent reason, she’ll just go into panic overdrive mode and start shrilling like an air raid siren…

I’m here, Rockle. And please, those of you who didn’t see Kevin and Drew the first time around, don’t judge their performance this time as the way they always raced. Drew apparently has said he regretted going on this time because he didn’t realize how badly his injuries would affect him.

Drew is a court bailiff, and a couple of years ago was involved in a nasty fracas in his courtroom that gave him a nasty back injury. I’m not sure if he ended up having surgery, but in any case he was off work for well over a year and has never completely recovered, as isn’t unusual with bad back injuries. That’s why he couldn’t run. I’m a bit pissed off that Kevin didn’t learn to drive stick by now since that would have meant Drew could rest; but instead, Drew had to do all the driving, which definitely didn’t help his back. And he hurt his knee and his shoulder in that fall, and when your back hurts, trust me, it can hurt all the way down your legs, too.

So by the time they got to the mat tonight, Drew was in such pain that I honestly don’t think he cared what happened. I felt just awful for him. The way Oswald and Danny are having a wonderful time racing? That’s what Kevin and Drew were like in the first race. If you haven’t seen them there, don’t judge them by tonight, please! Go back and watch TAR1 and appreciate the joys of “Swing, you fat bastard, swing!” and “It’s Namibia, jackass!”

Anyway. Mirna has always been kookoo, but tonight she totally went over the edge. What on earth was she screaming at that poor bewildered cabbie? I could ignore the drama between her and Charla – that seems to be how they motivate themselves, and it you don’t take it seriously, it just gets hilariously funny – but the mess with that cabbie still has me scratching my head. Not that I blamed them 100% for being upset with the Beauty Queens, who were definitely trying to take advantage of the cabbie that M&C had paid for. But nevertheless, it was a case of Mirna at her most Mirna-ish. And yet in person she’s really quite pleasant!

That was the Best Roadblock Ever! And everyone had been up for nearly 24 hours by that point; it’s no wonder it was taking them so long to figure it out!

I’ve gotten the feeling both last week and this week that Drew only went on this season as a favor to Kevin. He really didn’t seem to want to be doing it from the beginning. And I can imagine that seeing how the decision to do the race was affecting Drew, Kevin wasn’t really feeling into the spirit of the thing, either.

Just to add to the pile on, Mirna and Charla rank among the single most blatantly insane competitors they’ve ever had on the show. There have been competitors that were completely amoral, a huge number that have extremely severe stress related break downs, and ones that were so passive-aggressive that they could be sleepwalking serial killers, but they take the cake. Between the drama queen reactions to everything that occurs, a persecution complex that would awe a Christian martyr (mainly on Mirna’s part), and the gyroscopically self-centered delusion that they are pure of heart and morally superior to everyone they encounter it leaves one wondering why they aren’t heavily medicated. I can believe that some contestants may be advised that conflict is good and editing can make anyone look bad, but they’re so far off the deep end that it can’t all be picking bad moments…

If you’re interested I think the GSN reruns of TAR are currently on their season. In my opinion it’s the best one of them all and you can see the horror that is Charla and Mirna. (Also thrill to the classic TAR line: “My ox is broken!” in a situation that you have to see to believe.)

Hate to say it but I’m glad Kevin & Drew went home. They were embarassing to watch, especially Drew. Back injury or no, he was totally out of it mentally for two straight legs…when people are passing you, it’s usually a sign that the speed limit is NOT 40 kmph anymore, or at the very least you should RTFC again!!

Next week, I hope there’s another twist like last season and the last two teams get eliminated – namely, Charla/Mirna/David/Mary. Damn, what a screech-fest!

Kevin towing the SUV out of the mud looked like a Darwin Award in the making…

Thank goodness, Ozzy & Danny look strong. I wish they would break their alliance with Romber though, I just can’t take the conflict of emotions when both teams miss a flight, take a wrong turn, etc. (YES!! Romber’s behind! Ohno that means Cha x3 is behind too…) TerIan had a couple brainfarts but they’re still in the running – actually quite a change from their original race, where they nearly got eliminated several times and only came on really strong towards the end. Team Guido seems to be invisible – they need to bring back some Old School Evil!

And I’m totally not loving the BQ’s this time, unlike last season. Combined with Rob & Amber, that’s too much smug snarkiness for one race.

I have started a personal countdown on how long it takes for Mirna to start telling random locals that other Racers are “criminals.”

Season 5 is the first time I saw the Race, and it made a convert out of me. I recommend seeing it, if you haven’t already. Although you should be warned that between Colin & Christine, Kami & Karli, and of course Mirna & Charla, your eardrums might burst. They’re all very intense and high-strung.

I felt likewise last night, but I feel better about it because I don’t think The Chas are necessarily aligned with Rob & Amber. They just happen to be ending up in the same place at the same time, for now. The Chas are quite clever and they run their own race, so they’ll classily bow out of any alliances they might have after a leg or two. (I hope.)

She was throwing the TAR fanny pack at him, screaming for him to take all her money. I need to re-watch it and figure out what the heck she was flipping out over. I understand she was angry with the BQs for following them, but the way she freaked out on the poor cabbie was just nuts.
She’s just insanely high-strung.

rockle, what’s the line for Mirna freaking out like that by episode 6?

At this point I’m rooting for Eric & Danielle, though that may change after next week. I want the Beauty Queens to make the final three, largely for the eye-candy factor. Smart money is on Rob & Amber – two first-place finishes in a row is something to take into consideration.

Something about how he was taking all of her money and she wouldn’t be able to eat tomorrow. I guess her pseudo-Spanish was failing her.

A very linear leg this time, full of bunching points. It’s exciting when one wrong turn at the end can spell disaster, but I’d rather the first 40 minutes of the episode count for something.

Taxi Assessment

Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
John Vito & Jill - Already gone.
Kevin & Drew - (Down from “Flat Tire”) - Aw, man. Drew just looked like he did not want to be here. I don’t think he threw the race or anything, but being that sick and tired in the second leg is not good. Last place could have gone to any of three different teams, but I guess I’m glad Kevin & Drew got the boot – they don’t look like they could have made it through another episode. (By the way, check out the official CBS recap. They call Kevin’s performance at the beginning , where he ties the tow rope to himself, a “Darwin Award moment in the making.” Hee hee.)

Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
David & Mary - (holding steady) - I don’t know what people do down in coal mines, but apparently it doesn’t involve working on anything mechanical or using heavy equipment. Seriously, they sucked at this Detour, and they sucked at navigating (although, to be fair, I give Mary credit for a good performance at the Roadblock). And then Mary is suddenly suprised at the end when people are Racing! Instead of! Helping! I mean, what’s up with that? Why would people on the Amazing Race be so darn competitive? That’s so unexpected! So anyway, David & Mary turn in out another bottom-of-the-pack performance, which will likely be their last bottom-of-the-pack performance, if you see what I mean.

Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
Uchenna & Joyce - (holding steady) - A terrible Roadblock performance by Joyce – that’s not a bad thing in and of itself, since time spent on the Roadblock didn’t really matter this episode. But I wonder if the stress will expose some faultline in their team. They place solidly in the middle at the end of the leg, but I’m keeping them ranked here for now.
Charla & Mirna - (holding steady) - Drama! Always drama! Was it Dustin & Kandice who observed that this team’s normal operation ranges from over-emotive to histrionic? Anyway, true it is. A poor Detour choice for them, I think – do you really want to work on a giant tire when one-half of your team is a petite woman and the other half is a little tiny person? I do admire the fact that they actually pushed through and finished, but they don’t seem to be aware that all the drama takes time that they wouldn’t otherwise be spending.
Teri & Ian - (down from “Rapido!”) - Not a great showing this episode. Ian’s work on the Roadblock was a little sketchy, and being unable to find the SUVs after the Detour? Oh, come on. A little more Sherlock Holmes and a little less Inspector Clouseau would be appropriate, Ian.

"Rapido! Por Favor?" - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Eric & Danielle - (down from “Passing Lane”) - Not really a bad leg at all for Eric & Danielle, but I’m amusing myself by shuffling the rankings around, and they’re the most obvious team to take down a peg. Eric’s performance at the Roadblock wasn’t all that great, and they’re clearly a step behind the lead teams.
Dustin & Kandice - (holding steady) - A good performance on the Roadblock (not that it mattered, the leg layout being what it was). They fell behind at the Detour – I think they should have chosen the other option, but, hey, that’s an easy call when I’m sititng in my recliner. They also had a near-disastrous navigation mistake at the end, but luckily four other teams followed them, and Dustin & Kandice were the first to make the correction

In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
as a disaster just waiting to happen, but if they can keep focused they could easily win it all.
Joe & Bill - (up from “Rapido!”) - A good leg for Joe & Bill, with nothing much to say about them. An oopsie on the who needs to drive the loader, but at least they figured it out right away and it dodn’t seem to cost them much time. Apparently they have what it takes to just edge Eric & Danielle and Uchenna & Joyce, so keep that in mind in later episodes.
Danny & Oswald - (holding steady) - This team (along with Rob & Amber) could have had real problems at the beginning with the flight delay. However, it wound up not mattering when they overtook a bunch of teams at the Roadblock (and then everyone got on the same flight afterward, so it really didn’t matter). But a great Roadblock performance, a great Detour performance, and no problems navigating – a fabulous leg for a couple of fabulous guys.
Rob & Amber - (holding steady) - I think the gravel-dumping Detour was slightly quicker (especially when teams screw up the lug-tightening), so this team stayed ahead of Danny & Oswald by dint of choosing the right Detour. But a very good leg overall. Oh, also – yeah, yeah Rob. You’re stirring the pot, yes you are. Your basic idea here is sound: if other teams are constantly thinking about Rob & Amber instead of Racing, then they make mistakes. But, Rob, if you are constantly thinking about what other teams are thinking about… You can fill in the thought yourself.

Cruisin’ with Earl - or, drivin’ on the shoulder, takin’ shortcuts, and generally kickin’ butt.
No one yet, but you have to admit that Danny & Oswald and Rob & Amber are looking awfully sharp. One more good finish and I’ll move those teams up here.

Next week: More drama, courtesy of Charla & Mirna. Big surprise.

[sub]Props to Mullinator and his Raj Ratings.[/sub]

I doubt Charla could have driven the big scoopie machine (yes, that is the technical term).

Great episode! Two of my three favorite teams end up on top again (Rob and Amber and the Chas), and the third manages to not shoot themselves in the foot by getting lost again (the BQs).

And my three least favorite teams take the last three spots! As sad as I was to see that Team Theerye Ma Freends And I Like Theem will be around for at least one more week, it was definitely time for Kevin and Drew to go. Boy I bet there are some pissed off former racers at home who got passed over for those two. What a waste of time.

TAR Lesson #153: If you don’t speak Spanish, speak English with a pseudo-Spanish accent. They’ll understand you.

Dammit! I forgot this was on again! Crap!

I had wondered about that. Normally, you’d probably be right, but I have a hard time believing that the producers wouldn’t have made some allowances for Charla – pedal extenders and a booster seat and whatnot. Assuming that’s the case, I think if Charla had dumped one load, and Mirna then took over, things would have gone much quicker for them. Again, that’s an easy call from my padded TV-viewing chair, and maybe not so easy in the field. (At least they didn’t have to torque the lug nuts to the appropriate torque spec. Now that would have been a disaster.)

I think the cabbie was asking for more money than Mirna actually had. Add to that the fact that they esentially dropped to last place while they were sitting there arguing; I think she was worried that the cabbie would take off and she’d be stuck in last place with no ace in the hole.

Like rockle, I don’t think it’s really an alliance. It’s more…professional courtesy, I guess. They’ve wound up running the race near each other, and far enough out front of the other teams, that a few friendly tips in each direction does no harm and smooths the going for each team. Smart racing, and I’ll bet you’ll see none of it if either team is actaully in danger of elimination.

I watched the Season 1 DVD not long ago, and Mama Tiger’s right. Kevin & Drew were much more fun in their original season. Not only were they having fun, but they seemed to be one of those rare teams that really got into the spirit of going to foreign countries. Not just saying “oh, those mountains are beautiful,” or “I learn so much from seeing other cultures” but just…sleeping on the streets, and enjoying local foods, and feeling comfortable in strange locales. Yeah, they should have passed up this season, but dang. If only… :frowning:

Makes me so proud. No, wait - let’s make the distinction - Phoenix and Towson, MD, NOT Bawlmer and certainly not Parkville.

the Charla/Mirna/BQ thing went down like this:

1 Charla/Mirna pay cabbie to lead them
2 BQs latch on to the C&M convoy
3 C&M are angry that BQs are getting a free guide on their dime
4 C&M pull over, apparently hoping the BQs will assume they have a breakdown, and will go on ahead, cuz, you know, it’s better to lose the race than not get fairly reimbursed for a cab.
5 BQs pull over as well
6 C&M demand money if they are going to follow their cab
7 BQs decide to ask the cabbie for directions instead so they can go on alone
8 C&M, in a manner that only they can muster, refuse to allow this option, screaming shrilly at the BQs until they leave out of sheer desire to get away from C&M
9 C&M notice that other teams are beginning to pass them, and now wish to ditch their cabbie and follow before falling too far behind
10 Frustrated at their cabbie’s apparent inability (despite clear communicaton in the universal language of insulting Spanglish accents) to understand their desire to pay him off and leave him in the wilderness, they thrust a fanny pack at him and practice their histrionics for later in the race.

If that’s what he’s trying for, he’s failing miserably. Yowwwrrrr. Damn, that is a good-looking man.

No. Nothing at all. Before their first race they were told there would be no changes made for Charla, according to her. But I can promise you that she’s used to having to deal with the world simply not fitting her. I know alllll about that myself. And there’s always been one choice she can manage. I took one look at those tires and thought, “Damn, I’d need a stool!” the same way she did!

I would take the under on that one – my personal gut feeling is that it will be no later than Episode 4.

Your reasoning is sound, but I don’t know – it’s just as easy to go from first to worst in this game as it is to go from worst to first (although I don’t know if it’s as common). I think I’m liking The Chas. They’re so Zen about everything, which I appreciate. Their ability to not spaz out under pressure and to know exactly where one’s towel is, so to speak, is very refreshing. Also …

This is another reason why, even if the smart money is on Rob & Amber, I’m still hedging my bets. I think that at this point their biggest flaw is that they both believe their own hype. That can be very dangerous in this game. Even if you’re good (and they are, much as it pains me to admit it), you still have to keep working to get a leg up.

That was supposed to be a Spanish accent? It sounded Russian, or Eastern-Eurpoean-Jewish. Transylvanian, maybe? That woman has a seriously disturbed idea of what a Spanish accent is supposed to sound like. Hasn’t she ever watched a Speedy Gonzales cartoon?

Thank you. This is exactly what I was trying to say about any collaborating/commiserating between Rob & Amber and Danny & Oswald. I just couldn’t wrap my brain around the phrase “professional courtesy” so early in the morning.

Oh, and whiterabbit? Yes, Phil is a hottie, but sometimes? He wears these really tragic pants that make him look like he has a bubble butt or a really long waist or something. Not so much this season, though.

If you remember, on their original season, Mirna was speaking Italian to the Russian travel agents (belissimo!) and Spanish (rapido!rapido!) to…well, everybody everywhere. So yeah…that’s probably Mirna’s idea of a Spanish accent.
