Anyone else watching the newest incarnation of American Horror Story? Only one episode has aired so far, but I’m already hooked. It’s starting out as a basic revisit of the classic eighties dead teenager genre, but knowing AHS, it will no doubt get rather twisted before long. And since the eighties were my favorite decade, I’m loving the fashions, the music, and the memories of the fads. Also, the soundtrack (other than authentic songs from the era) sounds a LOT like the music John Carpenter writes for his movies.
I loved the first four or so seasons, but after Freak Show, they just became too damn avant-garde for me. But this looks like a return to form.
I enjoyed the first episode. Reminded me of the slasher movies we used to watch during sleepovers. And the soundtrack was great. Looking forward to this week’s episode!
I’m all over the place when it comes to the previous seasons. I watched the seasons out of order which may have confused things. I liked Murder House but got annoyed with Asylum about halfway through. Didn’t watch again until Apocalypse which I really enjoyed. Then I decided to go back and get caught up. I started with Coven which I also really enjoyed. Then I finished Asylum which I will freely admit I gave up on too soon because it got a lot better. Freak Show to me was a slog that even Neil Patrick Harris couldn’t save. Loved loved loved Hotel, mostly probably because of Liz Taylor. Roanoke was an interesting concept but very uneven. Didn’t like Cult much at all, probably because I live deep in trump-humper territory and know people like that. Not sure why I kept watching, I guess maybe I was hoping it would get better.
I’m glad I did watch the seasons out of order, if I hadn’t I probably wouldn’t have stuck around for Apocalypse after Cult.
I wonder if they’re going to keep up the slasher movie concept (which seems hard to stretch out for a season) or if it’s going to veer off in a different direction like last year.
Too campy for me… It might as well be Scream Queens s3. I don’t mind camp at all but I prefer AHS on the weirder side. But yes usually things take a turn after the first couple of episodes so we’ll see where this goes…
Caught the first episode last night, really enjoyed it. However, I’ve also really enjoyed the first episodes of many of the seasons, but only stuck with about half of them after the premiere, because they usually veer off into something else.
All I want is more Murder House. Is that too much to ask?
Yes, I agree. Although I enjoy the macabre parts of previous seasons I think in general they would benefit from an editor who would trip the story a bit each time.
I’ve seen them all and really enjoyed this season’s premiere. Tying in Richard Ramirez (The Night Stalker) from “Hotel” was a brilliant move by Ryan Murphy.
I saw the first episode but I’m not yet seeing the hook that makes it any different from a real 1980s slasher b-movie. Hopefully they change it up in the next couple episodes and it becomes something different.
Well it’s already starting to veer into something else; based on Margaret’s comments about that counselor* only being there because the other counselors dragged him back to camp suggests Camp Redwood is a ghost trap like the murder house and Hotel Cortez. That should be interesting, especially since I suspect Margaret wasn’t exactly an innocent survivor.
*Until I realized he was a ghost my first thought was he was a character in a horror film the Night Stalker somehow entered and was causing to go off script.
Well we’re now halfway through the season and half the cast are now ghosts bound to Camp Redwood. I don’t think we’ll see a major plot shift like we did with Roanoke or Apocalypse, but this would be a great setup for some time jumps. Which would be a little odd given the emphasis on the specific year 1984.
Well, they certainly are. I can’t tell you how relieved I was that it was finally daybreak this week. I was really tired of the darkness. I still kinda like this season, but I’m getting a little bored with it. Except when the Richard Romero character shows up - I find that actor so beautiful but dangerous that I can’t take my eyes off him!
Season finale next week. The last few episode feel like they ran out of plot and are just stalling for time. I’m guessing whatever happens next week Lana Winters does a story about it.
