American Idol 1/17

The Windchill daughter wasn’t crazy about the cowboy, so I guess Dave Sinatra is still the frontrunner. I mean, it’s all about who can get the 11 year old girls hitting the redial button, right?

I was so very disappointed that the magic coaster didn’t spill Paula’s drink.

Yee gads, what a train wreck. Where oh where to begin?

Apparently (according to TWoPper reaction) that Ace guy was hyped up a bit in recent weeks. I don’t see it. Decent voice, but too boy-bandy, slouchy, and hat-hairy.

The Singin’ Cowboy? Oh dear. Well, at least he’ll get his first plane ride, followed very closely by his second.

Neither my wife nor I are quite sure what paradise smells like, but I imagine just the opposite following “Flawless” around. I’ve said this about contestants in the past… I fear he may be a little too “special” to laugh at. Awkward!

I thought the rawker Chris was all right, but nothing special. I’ll echo the comments that the whole rocker thing on this show is dumb, though. We got some good stuff out of Bo last year, but aside from that it’s been a complete disaster. Ah well.

I kinda liked the Bjork girl. She’s doomed though. Also, she’s rumored to be a poster at TWoP, so maybe we’ll get some interesting stories out of it (assuming she scans that fine print pretty good).

I don’t know what to say about Zachary. I’m not hip to the whole transgender thing, so I was tres confused. If you’re going to dress like a girl, wouldn’t you want to be mistaken for one? He seemed miffed that people were confused, which made my brain ache. And I’ll admit I laughed at the soundtrack. Forgive me.

I forget her name, but the Best Sixteen Year Old Ever was pretty darn good. A little too good maybe. I get that weird vibe from her I get when watching those creepy-as-hell 6 year old kiddie barbie contests. I liked that she seemed down to earth though.

Next Tuesday: So much excitement they wouldn’t dare cut it down to one hour! Bless them every one!

Well, the invention did suck. And bringing it to the audition was a crass blend of pimping something other than his singing and going too far in schmoozing. A lot of Simon’s remarks so far this season have been uncalled for, but that guy made himself vulnerable, so he was fair game.

Amazed that the second of two women to sing one of Paula’s songs nailed it.

Loved the chick with the flower in her hair.

Can’t predict how the cowboy will do in Hollywood. But I gagged, from day one, on Carrie’s fake-ass “Ah’ve never been own the tawkin’ pitcher box before!” routine, so it was cool to see a gen-u-wine hick. He was so adorable! And when/if he gets cut, I have a feeling it’ll still be the high point of his life just to have gotten that far.

That one girl shouldn’t have kept shaking her head while she sang. She wouldn’t have gotten through anyway, but it didn’t help to keep sending “no” signals to the judges.

When Tablecloth was singing, I cried, and not in a good way.

Hard not to root for the cowboy kid. He does seem to have a decent voice, he just needs practice in front of people other than his family so calm down. Hopefully he gets over that hump this year in Hollywood and comes back next year more experienced.

This is the first time I’ve watched this show all the way through and for some reason this particular person struck a chord with me. He (I think) didn’t sound terrible but I thought the way they looked at him and treated him was, for some reason, fairly upsetting to me. This kid seemed truly comfortable in his (?) skin and he really seemed torn down when he left. Just seemed cruel to treat him shitty over the whole gender thing.

Dunno about Tablecloth guy, but I’m pretty sure that the other guy’s “Cosmic Coaster” could double as a weapon to knock out the guards.

Speaking of gay cowboys… (oh, weren’t we?)

Did he say anything about fishing trips up in the mountains?

I’m with Slacker. One of the youngsters early on in this show was good, but I was pretty underwhelmed by many of the others they chose.

OK, that was funny. But I felt so sorry for him, because he was so nervous, but he had the beginnings of a good voice. And they should have continued to advise him to go home and get more training before trying again, rather than inviting him to Hollywood. (And do people still ride around on horseback on cattle ranches? I imagined that they work from a motor vehicle these days.)

Much, much better episode than the night before. I’m a big Chris Daughtry fan. I understand that he’s homely. Maybe even goofy looking. But that voice is almost 60s quality. I’d love to hear a whole album with his voice.

I think the judges were mistaken about the emotion thing. I thought he emoted just fine, and in just the right amount.

Yeah, I’m with you here, although that might not count for much, because I’m a crotchety old fart who never much liked disposable pop music in the first place. I prefer a more mature, less boy band kind of sound.

Our local news said one was arrested for forgery, and that they both had “extensive records.”

Snap! Wasn’t Diana DiGarmo 16? So Simon is saying that someone who hasn’t proven herself yet is better than someone who came in second??

It was sweet to see them encourage the cowboy, but if he can’t afford voice lessons how can he afford the two plane rides? AI doesn’t pay for that, does it?

Yeah, I think the cowboy proved that Simon isn’t 100% asshole. I think he’s just fed up with people who walk in with a gimmick just to get on TV. We only have to watch an hour or two at a time of the terrible auditions. He, Randy, and Paula have to sit through them all day. So it’s understandable, I think, that he would be a little pissy when someone like the tablecloth guy walks through the door. In the cowboy, he saw someone who was genuine, loved to sing, had a decent voice, and didn’t have the blown-up self image that so many of the contestants do. In someone like him, Simon sees a good voice and a good personality, and someone who can be molded into something special. He hasn’t been tainted. Simon also probably recognized that this guy wasn’t going to have many shots in life besides this.
Having said that, I have mixed feelings about people like the girl who was whining about being evicted. She had a whole group of supporters who had special shirts made just for the occasion. Maybe they could have saved the money they spent on the shirts and used it toward the rent? Sorry, but I just didn’t feel that sorry for her.
What to say about Zachary? If you’re upset that people confuse you for a girl, dude, then don’t wear a girls’ top, jeans, and belt, and wear your hair in a style that makes you look like a girl. If you’re a guy who wants to be a girl, then come out and say it, because that really is nothing to laugh about. But if you’re just doing it to get a rise out of people, knock it off. There really are transgendered people out there who don’t need people like you pulling stunts like this on national TV. I guess it just bugged me that he acted all upset that people mistook him for a girl all the time, then sang a Whitney Houston song and whined that the judges judged him too harshly because he was a guy trying to sing a girls’ song that was out of his range.
As for the Zachary from Tuesday night’s show: There was a preview for a segment on the local Fox news about him. He’s from Hudson, Wisconsin. Looks like he’s a sweet kid. I’d have watched it, but … well, I don’t watch Fox news.

I ended up liking her voice, but I too wondered about her situation. You’ve been evicted twice; something contributes to that.

I think they do, actually.

If the kid’s family owns horses and land to run them on, they aren’t just scrapin’ by.

Then Simon needs to talk to his producers. They only see as many terrible auditions as the preliminary screeners think are entertaining for us. They could set it up so the freaks are booted immediately, and only those with some talent get before the Big 3.

Well, that is what makes interesting television. I know why they let the terrible people on. The problem is that there are too many people, since the first season, who are pulling gimmicks just to get on TV. I don’t blame Simon for being prickly about having to put up with any of them.

Yeah, but I think he meant that he — personally — didn’t have the money. It is often that case that rural conservative families require their children to earn whatever allowance they might get. That said, it could well be the case that his parents can’t afford it either, even if they wanted to give it to him (and they probably do). Agriculture is a big industry these days, and many small independently owned farms/ranches are just barely scraping by.

To complete the above thought, their ownership might be more of debt than of actual horses/land.
